I travelled here with a pilgrimage of religious sites in Portugal and Spain. I had never even heard of Covadonga before the trip. What a BEAUTIFUL place it is, and the Hotel Gran Pelayo made the visit even nicer. The hotel was recently remodeled and the rooms bordered on luxurious. This was the nicest hotel we stayed in during the 2-week trip, and I decided then and there to return. If I plan to return somewhere that is saying a lot because I don't do it often although I am "well-travelled", as the saying goes.

The hotel is beautifully located in the pictorial town of Covadonga and close to the heart of Picos de Europa (national park in Asturias). View to the cathedral and cave.

Our experience was horrible. We paid 100 Euro excluding breakfast for a room in the addict with only roof windows. The temperature outside was mild (mid twenties). The room was extremely hot (above 30) despite the fact the the A/C was turned on at maximum. The receptionist claimed there is nothing wrong with the A/C and anyway they have no other rooms. This did not help and even worse it started to rain and the windows were leaking directly on the beds. Trying to shut them off produced huge amounts of spilling on the beds. Any way there was no way to survive with closed windows. We had to sleep like that all night in horrible heat and windows leaking on the beds. In addition, the TV did not work and the shower spilled all over the bath. The room is extremely small too. I strongly suggest to avoid this hotel.

We stayed in Arcea Gran Hotel Pelayo in May 2010 and enjoyed it`s atmosphere, tasteful decoration of rooms and the hotel in general and of course it’s great location in the heat of Picos de Europa (national park in Asturias). The view from our room window to the cathedral and cave was wonderful and each morning slightly different due to the weather which is changeable in the mountains. We used this hotel for exploring Lagos of Covadonga. The guidebooks warn that in high season (July-August) there might be crowds of people wishing to see them but in May the only slight traffic jam was due to cows passing slowly across the road.

We enjoyed excellent service and very reasonable rates during a quiet time, the only way to appreciate this faboulous location. It reminded me of a film I once seen..
