We stayed in Riverton as a convenient stopover point on a tour of the South Island. The Riverton Rock guesthouse is on the main road, Palmerston St, but was a little difficult to find as there was no sign on the front of the house. There was ample parking round the back, and the bedroom, lounge and kitchen were warm and welcoming. The twin room had comfortable beds with electric blankets - the hooks for hanging clothes might be a bit restrictive if you were staying for a week, but for one night they were perfectly adequate. A lovely building, and a friendly host - I only wish we had come in the summer, when the town clearly comes to life. As it was, arriving shortly after 9pm on a Friday night it was as if we had arrived at 2am - the local chip shop had just shut and there was nowhere to eat until 11am the next morning. We were glad we had a few supplies so could use the kitchen. In the summer, I have no doubt that the town comes to life and this guest house is in a good position, but I'd give Riverton a miss in the Winter.
