“Lovely base for large groups of skiiers”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

We've just returned from a week's stay at these apartments, and I have to say overall they were extremley impressive! They were so warm and cosy and very spacious - lovely to come back to from a long day's skiing.

We had a 4 bedroom apartment, and although it was listed as 2 doubles and 2 bunk beds, the bunk beds were continental style, so there was a double bed on the bottom of each - we were 4 couples and this had been the biggest worry, so we were pleasantly surprised. The only downside was that only one thin pillow per person was provided - we had to use the spa duvet from the top bunk rolled up as a bolster, but the double rooms weren't so lucky.

The apartment also had two very clean bathrooms with lovely powerful showers - one even had a sauna, which could be turned on by a timer so it was ready when you arrived back - a lovely facility to stretch out in after a hard day on the piste!

The comunal areas were great - large dining table and comfy sofa area - we stayed in for a lot of the evenings because it was so comfortable - the one tip I would say is to bring an ipod dock or similar, as this made such a huge difference and gave some atmosphere.

The kitchen is more of a kitchenette, but well equipped with a dishwasher, large fridge freezer, microwave, kettle, toaster and 2 coffee machines (one filter and one espresso maker). It had plenty of crockery, cutlery and glasses, and also a good amount of other dishes, jugs, teapots etc - the only thing that let it down was the utensils - these were limited - if I went back I'd take a decent small vegetable knife (the only knives they had were huge!), masher and slotted spoon! There was also only one tea towel provided, so if you are planning on eating in a lot I'd slip a couple of extra tea towels into your suitcase!

The one area where the apartment was perfect for skiiers was the entrance foyer - large area with benches and boot-dryers, lots of pegs and shelves for jackets and helmets, and underfloor heating for cold toes! The best thing was the larger drying cabinet, as this was a godsend for wet gloves, snoods, goggles etc. There was a large outdoor locker with ample space for skis and boards too.

Location wise, this was perfect for us - it was out of town a little way, but closer to the lifts than town centre places - the closest lift was the VM8 (a 5 minute walk along the flat) which links you to some fabulous runs from the very top, down to Rodkullen (as well as buses to Rodkullen and the night buses), which was our favourite area and even across to the VM6, and Bjornen beyond if you fancy an adventure, as it is possible to ski there and back in a day. For other runs and buses to Tegefjall, Duved and Bjornen, the Kabinbanen lift was around a 10 minute walk (in ski boots) but it is uphill, so be warned! The skiing was great - a wide selection of runs from beginner areas to some fast reds, and the Varmestugas, little buildings with indoor picnic areas and microwaves, kettles were a brilliant feature, as you could take sandwiches, thermoses etc and eat/drink in the warm.

Town itself is only a 10 minute walk, and was very pretty, with some good bars and restraurants - price wise it's similar to the UK, but lots of the restaurants were quite upmarket so you were still looking to pay £25-30 for a main course. There were cheaper places but these were further out - in fact one great place for Pizza and Tapas was Bistro Madonna which is within the Brunkulla apartments, so great as a local. The local supermarket is very well stocked and around 10 minutes walk, and the Systembolaget was around a 20 minute flat walk,so not too arduous carrying back your booze!

We were thinking if we came back if we would want to stay in a different area, but decided that we would probably go back to Brunkulla, as for us, the location was the best- it depends on where you want to ski though, and how often you plan to eat out, but for us it was perfect!

“Great appartment with good location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2011

We booked independently and stayed here for a week over the Christmas period 2011. 7 of us in a 2 bed appartment on the 2nd floor. Our appartment (928) was on the corner with good views across the Lake. There was plenty of space (4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, one with a sauna) with more than enough equipment and the appartment was clean. It was, however showing some signs of wear; the dishwasher didn't wash well and the TV needs to be updated. There is a good sized hallway to store outerwear and boots with a good drying cupboard and shoe driers. Skis can be stored securely in a locker room on the ground floor.

The appartments are well located with a 5 min walk to the nearest ski lift and about 10 mins into the town. There is a bar and bakery within the appartment complex

Room Tip: Choose a second floor room as there is no noise from above and there are lifts available

“Brunkulla Apartments”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2011

The Brunkulla Apartments seems to have so few reviews but deserves more.

We stayed in the two bed apartment on the 2nd floor for one week in February 2011.

The Apartment.....check in was very slow & the staff didn't seem to be very enthusiastic but we were the last of our bus load to check in. The apartment more than made up for the lack of smiles at the desk. Great open plan kitchen & living room which was a good size. The apartment had a well equipt kitchen which was spotlessly clean. Nice size bathroom with a large shower & lovely sauna with under floor heating. Two decent sized bedrooms. Cloakroom with under floor heating & boot heaters helped keep the equipment in good condition & each apartment building has a lockable ski shed so you do not have to take your skis up the the room. There is a lift if you need it, which is very handy. The only incident was when the clean linen was being delivered part way through the week, when we didn't reply the guy let himself into the apartment & I had fallen asleep on the sofa after skiing & lets just say I was not suitably dressed for guests....I am not sure who was more shocked!!!!! Be ready for visitors!

I agree with BizLeuisureFred, request a room off the ground floor, they are definately on show to all walking by.

Location, is a little way from the town centre but an easy walk, pavements are well gritted & with good lighting. The distance to the slopes was a bit more challenging than I would have thought. The distance is quite short but with Ski boots & carrying skis, it feels like quite a distance. After the first few days we had wished we had an apartment slightly closer (we had one of the furthest apartments from the slope & if we had know we would have requested a different room). The restraunt Mungos below the apartments was lovely & their cocktails were lovely.

The town is really nice, the lots of food choices...the food out is no more expensive than the U.K so it was not too painful. The supermarket is well stocked for the nights when you want to cook in the apartment.

Skiing was quite challenging for both our ski levels so Are is definately worth a visit.

Overall, the apartment was great & we would stay there again but request a room closer to the slopes.

“Spacious, adequate apartments - but expensive”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2010

Have used similar 8-person apartments during our ski vacation two years in a row now. Even though we are just 5, these apartments are good as they have two showers and four bedrooms. The kitchen is quite well equipped and there is a sauna. Good with lockers for skis etc in the outdoor shed.
The price level, though, is high. If you do not want to clean the apartment yourself, you will be charged 2000 SEK which is definitely not going into the pockets of the cleaner, but into Skistar's pockets.
Another irritating thing is that when booking the apartments at skistar.com, you will just be given the apartment number. No clues are given on where they are - 1st, 2nd, 3rd floor etc. Some of the apartments are just where everyone enters into the buildings. Like living in a fish tank.

“Brunkulla Apts, warm and well equipped”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 March 2008

We have just returned from our week long stay at the Brunkulla Apartments, and would be happy to recommend them.

The apartment we rented was suitable for 8 people and had 4 bedrooms/2 bathrooms. We were a mixed party of 7 and found that the design and equipping of the apartment meant we had everything we needed. We booked through skistar.com the Swedish central ski area web site, which was a well informed, easy to use site. Unless you wish to spend your last day cleaning I suggest you pay extra for the end of holiday cleaning and also pay per person for bedding, or you will need to take bed linen with you.

The apartment has a locked ski storage area, cloakroom area with underfloor heating (pefect to warm your toes on after a hard days skiing), a large living area with table and sofa's and 4 bedrooms. Two bedrooms had a double bed and 2 bedrooms had large bunk beds. The kitchen was well -equipped and clean, and the bathrooms also had under floor heating.

Are itself was about 300m's, a 10 min walk, but Sweden is very cold so it could seem further.! Our childs ski school was at Are Bjornen, a 15 min bus ride. Bjornen was designed for families, and we found the atmosphere and layout fabulous. The down side was the bus which only ran every 1 1/4, so we did spend a fair few hours sitting in the restaurant waiting for the bus. Ski school was only 1 1/2 hours but the only cheap thing we found in Sweden!

Are itself has everything you need, but take a big wallet full of money as it is VERY expensive. A 7km taxi ride was £22. We did a couple of trips and recommend the Moose Kissing - very funny.

My recommendations are: take lots of money, don't go here if you are an expert skier, and make sure you have the warmest clothes. For families the skiing is perfect with lots of interesting family oriented runs, adventure trails and off-pisting through the trees. Brunkulla is a great apartment complex, but you will need to walk to the lifts, and buses. No ski to door here!
