“Just returned from MLD, Feb 3 - 11, 2012”

This was our 1st visit to MLD and to Santa Maria.

We arrived at the Santa Clara airport at just before 1am on the 3rd. The flight down went off without a hitch. The Sunwing staff were friendly and looked after all of our needs on the way down.

We arrived at the hotel at approx. 3:30am. Had a very fast check in, and the bellboys brought all of our luggage in short order. We arrived at our standard room and it appeared clean and comfortable. Maybe missing a bit of the wow factor, but still large, and clean.

That morning, we met another couple that was on our flight down, and they mentioned that they upgraded to a superior room and it was quite nice. We decided to check it out and the front desk was quick to get someone to take us over. It was very nice, had more of a wow factor, and a walk in closet. The wife was sold, so I was told to pay up. The only hiccup we had with the new room was that we were suppose to receive a bottle of rum with the upgrade. I had to ask for 6 days at guest services before I went to the front desk to finally get it on the last day.

The resort is very large. Three main areas, Family section, adult section, and main lobby/entertainment/amenities area. It takes a bit of time to get your bearings since there are so many paths and buildings. The paths do have maps, and building guides, so it is easy to get around.

The entertainment in the evenings is good. If I can say anything negative about it, its that it starts a bit too late (9:30p.m.). We did not observe the daily entertainment around the pool or on the main portion of the beach. We were on a quieter portion of the beach for the most part, which is what we liked.

The beach and water were wonderful, well expect for one thing that I will discuss at the end of my review. The sand is white, the ocean is clear and a beautiful color. You can walk out a fair distance before it is up to your chest. We brought snorkeling gear, and were able to see some fish, even though there is no structure around MLD. On the last day, I actually had a school of fish (about 20) swim with me for about 500 feet, and when I started to swim back, they turned and came back the entire way with me. That was cool.

The food. Well this is one area that seems to be tough in Cuba. First off, let me say, there was a lot to eat, decent variety, and cooked properly for the most part. The only thing that I was slightly disappointed at was the fact the menus did not really change from day to day. You knew pretty much the foods that were going to be served each day at breakfast, lunch and dinner, with maybe 1 or 2 exceptions. With that being said, the quality was good, and there is something for everyone.

The A la carte restaurants were not of the superior variety, but the atmosphere was very good, the service was very good, but I would only rate the food as good in 2 or the 3 that we experienced. The Romantico meal was very good, with a very tender beef dish.

Now for the complaints. First off, this complaint is NOT about the resort, rather it is about a portion of the tourists that were at this facility.

WHAT THE HE** IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!

You are visitors in another country and you smoke like chimneys and then throw your butts on the ground even though there are ashtrays every 50 feet or you litter the beaches with your empty cups or other garbage and expect the locals to pick up after you. You people should be ashamed of yourself, you are disgusting pigs, and I am having a tough time refraining from saying exactly how I feel.

As Canadians, I thought we had far more class than that. Apparently some of our neighbors in Eastern Canada never got the memo as how to act. I am not going to stereotype everyone, but the guilty ones know who they are. Then again, maybe not. They are probably too arrogant to care about others.

All in all, it was a wonderful time. The locals are very friendly and make every attempt to accommodate us as visitors. I thank you for your generosity of allowing us share your beautiful country and hope to return again someday.

Room Tip: If your your wife or girlfriend is a diva, get the superior room with the walk in closet....lol.

Go if it is really cheap. The beach is really nice but everything else is sub par. This would be a one star in Mexico or a 3 star in the Dominican. Food was really really bad. First time to Cuba to see what all the fuss was about, now I know people go because it is cheap. Pay more get more somewhere else.
My wife and I visited the Melia cayo next door for a day and it was much nicer. Our mini bar was not serviced for three days no matter how many times we called or visited the front desk and no toilet paper for two days. Had to steal some from the pool bathroom. would never return but talking to other people they loved it but they also had never been anywhere but Cuba.
This place looks run down in the day but looks good at night. Constant tipping is needed to get anything. The joke among some of us was everyone needs a peso! So be prepared to tip a few hundred pesos or receive zero service. Overall not a nice time but we had fun laughing at how bad it was.

Room Tip: 2621 family side its a two room ocean suite close to beach and pool

“Fourth visit to Melia Las Dunas - always a great time”

This was our 4th visit, so needless to say we love the hotel. We were here as a couple once and three times with groups of friends. The hotel grounds are beautiful and very well kept. Check-in was effiicient as we were checked in ahead of time. They recognized us as returning guests and had our a la carte restaurants pre-booked, which was awesome.

Rooms: Clean, mini-bar was replenished everyday. Once during our stay, drinking water was not replaced but a phone call resolved this very quickly. Hot running water was always available and the maids did a great job taking care of things. Air conditioning functioned very well so no complaints here.

Food: We loved the food and thought that there was always a lot of variety. At breakfast, we enjoyed freshly made omelettes and pancakes, freshly blended juices made from delicious fresh fruit cut up right in front of you. There was also a variety of sausages, bacon, cold cuts and cheeses. At lunch we enjoyed the grills where you could have meat or fish grilled to your liking, pasta and stir fry stations as well as a variety of salads, stews, meat, fish, seafood and vegetable dishes. Fast food items like hamburger sand hot dogs were always available too. At dinner, there was even more variety, including smoked salmon, roast beef, roasted pork leg, baked fish and rosemary roasted chicken. So far, I've only been talking about the main buffet but the food at the a la carte and beach restaurants were great also. One really cool thing is that the all night restaurant has a variety of dishes including fish and chips, chicken nuggets and fries, shrimp and fries, hamburgers and hot dogs. This was a pleasant surprise, as most other hotels I've been to, only serve ham or grilled cheese sandwiches in the 24 hour restaurants. In conclusion, the food selection at Melia Las Dunas is great. One thing to keep in mind is that hot spices are not used much in Cuba, so if you like your food hot (i.e. seasoned with hot peppers), ask the waiter for some hot sauce and they will be happy to give you some Salsa Brava or Tabasco.

Beach: The beach at Melia Las Dunas is simply stunning. Crystal clear water, white sand and warm water. The beach is nice and calm in the mornings and for those who like waves, stick around for the afternoons. We always seemed to find chairs in good locations, but as with any hotel, try to get there as early as you can to get the best spots. Stay central if you enjoy music and want to part take in beach activities. There are at least two beach bars that we are aware of, one in the central area and another near the bridge that leads to building 25. Waiters also walk along the beach taking drink orders at times.

Pools: Swim up bar, large swimming area, wading pool for kids, dance lessons and activities around the pool, coconut trees around pool, hot tub close by, enough said.

Nightlife: There is always some form of entertainment going on. Live bands begin in the early evening. The lobby is buzzing with activity at this time as people mingle and enjoy the best drinks in the hotel served at the lobby. The servers are friendly and great people. Bertinali, Yereni, Daimi and Jesse do a fantastic job taking care of guests. In front of the band is an open floor where people dance to live Cuban or American music. After the band, the show begins on stage where the entertainers put on a really good show. After the show, the band comes back on until around 11:00. After this, there is usually a piano and saxophone player in the lobby playing jazz classics until midnight. One night per week there is a beach party that goes until 12:00 midnight. This is fun so don't miss it.

After midnight, the lobby bar remains open but the entertainment ends. And this is where my only complaint about the hotel comes into play. In the previous years we had been there, the disco used to be in the lobby area and it was part of the all inclusive. It was open until 2:00 am and it used to be great moving back and forth between the lobby and disco. Now if you want to dance and party after 12:00, you have to go to the disco at Melia Las Dunas Pueblo area near the Spa. This is within walking distance but there is a $2.00 cover charge for all patrons and you have to pay for all your drinks. $2.00 for a beer and $4 or $5 for rum and coke. The disco was very sparse the three nights we went to it and I feel that this is related to the extra charges. When it was included and close to the lobby, the disco used to be quite busy and fun.

Conclusion: Aside from the disco no longer being included, we loved everything about the hotel. Since it was our 4th time there, we wanted to take some time to meet the hotel manager. The manager, Adolfo was very pleasant and friendly. We told him how much we enjoyed the hotel and that we would not hesitate to recommend it to our friends. We had a fantastic time and as usual we left with many pleasant memories, new friendships and wishing that we could stay for just a few more days. We look forward to returning to Melia Las Dunas.

“Would go again in a heart beat!”

This place is so beautyful and the people are so nice. I would deffinately go again!

The food was great, like all resorts its usually all the same food, but they have tons of choices and the a la carte restaurants are great. The only one my sister and I didn't quite like was the pizza one. But that's because the cheeze tasted quite differently from what we are used to.

The beach is beautyful, the sand is amazing and the water is soooo clear, I did not want to leave the beach at all throughout my hole 7 days. It is a little difficult to find a chair, but once you do, its worth it! When we were there, there were allot of jellie fish on the sand, didn't hear of anyone getting stung and they do clean them off the beach regularly.

The rooms are huge and beautyfull and the resort itself is huge and full of amazing flowers and plants, there is a great spa and tennis courts...never bored!

Can't wait to go again!

Really enjoyed the bus ride, it was like an excursion. Guide was great, got to see a lot of Cuba I had not seen before.
The resort is wonderful. The food was the best I have had in Cuba. Loved the buffets, so much variety, did not get to try everything.
Enjoyed early mornings at the lobby drinking their amazing coffees served by wonderful staff. Evenings were fun just hanging out in the lobby. Best lobby I have been in..
The beach is amazing. White sand, waves are great. My only suggestion would be more chairs.
For the price, I would say this is a great Cuban resort..
