We spent a week at Barcelo Beach/Colonial (not the Memories resort) a year ago and decided to try Melia Cayo Santa Maria (MCSM) this year, Jan. 14-22 I thought people might appreciate a comparison. We had a group of 6 this year with 2 seniors (me), our adult son & fiancee plus 2 of their friends.
MCSM is about the same price but much smaller, about 1/3 the size and that's what we didn't like about Barcelo - too much walking and a lack of personal feel. MCSM has other big advantages and some things that were not as good.
The Pueblo between MCSM and Las Dunas is smaller than Estrella beside Memories but the artisans are the same with the same variety and prices. They change daily and we took a cab over to Estrella to see if anything had changed. Not much and not worth the extra travel to the one you are not near.
First, they share the same stretch of beach and the same bus ride from the airport. We did check-in at the buses this time due to the huge number of people, which is not normal. This was slow but at least you got your keys, info and wrist band so you could head straight to the bar. Our arrival was after 1:00 am at the resort, about the same as Barcelo a year earlier. We were given a map of MCSM but it was a terrible B&W photocopy and some of the a la cartes were not identified. I had downloaded a map off the interent and brought that. The map of Barcelo was much better. MCSM delivered our bags to our room within 30 min of arrival whereas in Barcelo, we were not offered any delivery service and got lost (along with a lot of other people) trying to find our way around a huge resort along poorly lit paths in the middle of the night. MCSM has brighter walkways that are much wider, a small thing that was very appreciated when encountering other groups or drivers on the walkways.
The 24 hour snack bar at Barcelo was much superior. They had a wonderful mini buffet every night that exceeded some dinner buffets at cheaper resorts. MCSM had a more common grill/bar with burgers, pizza, fries, etc. Nice location right by the pools compared to Barcelo at one far end not near anything. Overall edge to Barcelo for food variety late at night.
Rooms were similar. We requested a second floor in Unit 7, right by the beach. We also asked in both cases for oceanview but didn't receive it for free at either. We found MCSM had much nicer linens, the best we had ever encountered in Cuba with awesome double length pillows. I brought mine but didn't need it. The doors at MCSM closed more quietly which was a big plus for us since we had experienced problems at Barcelo with guests departing at 5:00 am many mornings and slamming their doors as they left. Guests were nicer at MCSC but the doors were quieter too with larger hallways. We had an issue with the toilet at Barcelo and the patio door at MCSM and in both cases, someone was sent within hours and both problems were fixed. Overall plus to MCSM.
Beach was the same stretch. We had a bit more problem finding loungers at MCSM but it was nearly full and Barcelo was not half full last year.
The buffet was a disappointment at MCSM by comparison. No line ups to speak of while we were at the buffet but Barcelo had MUCH more selection and the double sized buffet always had an area we could sit that was quieter. Every time we went to the buffet at MCSM, the selection and supply was running low. Barcelo always had ample food and we found the quality was a bit higher at Barcelo. Also, MCSM was so noisy. They were making fresh fruit smoothies each morning and the blender noise was too much for normal conversation. We ended up going to the 24 hr. grill for breakfast after the third day and were much happier, even though the selection was limited and there were a few birds trying to grab your food. Points to Barcelo for buffet.
For lunch, MCSM had a choice of the main buffet, the 24 hr grill or the beach grill/restaurant. The later was wonderful and very close to but not on the beach. A few tables outside, which was our option and a fair sized seating area inside the windowless but covered area. They offered a menu selection with table service or you could go to the adjoining charcoal BBQ for grilled chicken or pork with paiella, rice, some veggies, etc. No hamburgs (big mistake, always offer hamburgs to tourists, especially on a BBQ!) There also were two musicians who wandered around each lunch time entertaining everyone. One set was absolutely a hoot with a combo of music and comedy. Another set was good but not as awesome. I usually hate someone singing while I want to eat but they were very good. By comparison, Barcelo's choice for lunch was a tiny BBQ on the beach with questionably cooked chicken & burgers and a line-up long enough to cause me to go elsewhere for lunch, which meant their buffet or 24 hr. grill which was OK but not as great as MCSM. Points to MCSM, especially the musicians.
A la Cartes. This is where we separate the 2 resorts. MCSM has 6 by my count, we had guaranteed reservations for 4, then requested and received a 5th!!! We love a la cartes, it's the place were the chef's can show off their strengths (or weaknesses). MCSM just was head and shoulders above Barcelo. We heard that MCSM had a new Cdn. chef and that might have helped. We went to Mediterranean, French, Italian, Japanese and Jacuzzi. I heard too late that the beach grill converted to an a la carte for supper but we missed that one. Wish we had known in time and could have skipped the buffet for that night. All 5 a la cartes were either very good or great. Italian was too much food but very good. French offered Chateaubriand - wow - sadly 2 of our group chose that against my suggestion and the filet was inedibly tough, even though it was rare. I don't expect good beef in Cuba.
Jacuzzi was very romantic and in 2 gazebo type areas beside the main pool with flowing fabric and rope lighting. Nice meal but the location was super awesome. Japanese was not real Japanese, except for 3 tiny vegetarian sushi at the start. The main course is a stir fry of chicken, beef, shrimp, vegetables and rice that are made in front of you on a grill. You do have an option of which items you want on your plate. The chef we had was very entertaining and the food was closer to Canadian than Japanese. If you are there, the waiting area for the Japanese and French share the same room and they have some premium brands for free including real Baileys and some very good 7 year rums. My wife did not want to go to the Japanese after a bad experience at a Bahia Principe but afterwards, she liked it the best of all 5. Huge bonus for MCSM over Barcelo on the a la cartes.
Entertainment. We are not huge 'animation' fans. We dropped in to see the show at Barcelo and left part way through - same old stuff all the resorts in Cuba have. At MCSM, the theatre is adjacent to the lobby bar, so it was easy to wander over to watch the show, We didn't see every night but 4 of the 5 nights were VERY GOOD. We stayed to the end, except the beach party and we were pooped out by 2:30 am. The traditional show in the theatre was a mix of typical dancers with a magician who started out so-so and ended excellent plus bike acrobatics plus 2 guys who did acrobatics that were absolutely amazing feats of muscle power. The MC was very good. I find most MCs want to talk too much, they are too loud and swallow the mike. These were good except for one on karaoke night.
The beach party was the best. They started with a show in the lobby bar at 9:30 pm, where we seemed to hang out every night and got everyone into a conga line that traveled through the buffet and then throughout the resort picking up everyone as they went. The travels included 2 staffers getting tossed into the pool, then everyone ended at the beach for games, dancing and disco until 3:00 am.
Apart from that, there was entertainers already mentioned in the beach grill plus entertainers in the French & Mediterranean restaurants as well as the buffet and the lobby bar. The only one that turned me off was the fashion show. We were trying to enjoy a quiet afternoon in the lobby bar when they started booming music and it drove me out. Each to their own but they had already had one fashion show by the pool, if I wanted to see it, I would have been there.
Overall, the entertainment was the best we have seen at any resort, Cuban or otherwise and we've been to a lot of places. Bonus points to MCSM. I did not expect to be entertained with anything other than the 'usual stuff'
Size. As mentioned, Barcelo is 3 times the size of MCSM. Did it matter - YES! You get to recognize and meet people more easily. At Barcelo, there were so many people, you just got to know a few staff and a few of the guests. They seemed to move staff from one bar to another all the time. At MCSC, the staff were the same much of the time and you got to know each other much more readily. Similarly with other vacationers. You had more conversations, more fun, and that matters a lot. MCSM had a wide range of all ages and I was expecting mostly older people like myself. That matters too. The layout of the MSCM also helped. The lobby bar was a convenient meeting place for people who wanted conversation. The lobby bar had champagne, juice, and a selection of cakes/sweets until late afternoon which was a nice touch. The disco was right beside it but the glass door kept the noise inside except for one guest who kept propping the door open. The lobby bar at Barcelo (there are 2) have more of a hotel feel than a resort. Good service, good musicians, great champagne but they lack a friendliness factor. More bonus points to MCSM.
Pools. I'm not a pool guy but the pool areas were more populated than at the Barcelo. Pool music was there but not so loud to drive people away. I can't recall any pool music at the Barcelo but it was the same time of year and similar temperatures. Overall, we found MCSM to be a bit prettier but not a huge difference. Much easier to get around though. From one end of the resort to the other was probably less than 5 min at MCSM compared to 12 min with a brisk walk at Barcelo - I timed it.
I knew the long range forecast and arranged a one day cab tour of Remedios and Santa Clara (instead of the bus excursion) on a day we knew was not a beach day. I'm not a bus tour person. The cost was 150 CUC for 6 people and 130 CUC for 4 people not including lunch. It was well worth it but if I do it again, I would skip Santa Clara and spend more time in the smaller towns. Santa Clara had nothing of interest to us and standing in front of the Che memorial is just plain not interesting unless you want a lecture on the Cuban revolution. I'm a people person but I like to talk to live ones. We heard a few negative comments on the Catamaran tour but we did not partake and instead opted for the short Hobbie Cat rides. Some of our group wanted the 'ride with the dolphins' but although the enclosure is ready, the dolphins are not. We were told next year but I would personally not go there just due to cruelty to animals. I'm not a PETA fan but I find that caging wild things is not what I want to encourage.
Overall, MCSM is rated by most as a 4 1/2 star. If the buffet was a bit better, I would heartily agree. Since there are so many a la cartes and so many other options for breakfast and lunch, I'd have to say that you can almost avoid the buffet altogether if you're not a buffet person like me, so I think 4 to 4 1/2 stars is fair.
Would I go back? Probably, if the price was right. The long bus ride for any of the Cayo Santa Maria resorts is a huge problem that will not be changed anytime soon but we preferred MCSM to any other resort we have been to in Cuba and it would stand up well to Bahia Principe Tulum in Mayan Riviera with a similar bus ride. If the price were the same, I'd go to Mexico in a heartbeat but saving $300. or more has to factor in to the happiness rating also.
Last, we decided that January is not the best time for Cuba. It's much cheaper but I like to snorkel and the combination of wind/choppy water and chilly water on three times we have been in Jan. will force us to pay a bit more and go when we can be more sure of the warm water we have had in the fall or spring.
Long report, hope that it will help you,
Doug
