Views from the hotel simply can't be beaten in Alquezar and it is really the only place to book if you can.The staff are so welcoming, attentive and will go the extra mile to be as accomodating as possible -often a rarity in Spain, we have unfortunately found- the senora always has a smile and is a wealth of local information. (some of the local restaurant staff could learn alot about customer service from Hotel Santa Maria) The lounge, with comfy sofas, television, some board games and plenty of magazines, doubles as the breakfast room. Breakfast ,(there is occasionally a short wait if you're a late riser as the earlier guests finish), is tasty and filling and the fresh tomatoes the best we've tasted; the choice more than adequate for a small hotel - don't expect the buffet selection of a larger one. The bedrooms (all have that spectacular view) are not large but more than accomodated us for the week we stayed, are furnished simply and are light and airy (light wood/bright colours). As with most hotels (even the larger ones) coat hangers are at a premium! The shower-room has modern decor fitting the rest of the hotel though the 2 small spotlights over the bathroom mirror can't be angled which tends to leave some shady areas in the rest of the room. A few non-slip floor tiles in the shower section would have been a welcome addition. For someone with walking difficulties the hotel is ideally placed and has a lift. As with most mountain villages, car parking can be troublesome - late afternoon/early evening or early morning would be the best time to arrive for the parking area approx 100m from the hotel along the village entrance road (don't go to the signposted upper car park as you reach the village outskirts if you can help it - it's a very steep walk up and down from the hotel)
If we ever return to Alquezar, Hotel Santa Maria will be our hotel again!
