“Beautiful room and property, fun bar.”

We stayed at Hotel Yakunah for 4 nights in December. The property was gorgeous and very well maintained. The room was lovely -- very spacious, high ceilings, and a large bathroom. We enjoyed having drinks and watching live music at the bar, and the owners were very accommodating of our vegetarian needs (in fact, it was the best food we had during our entire stay). The staff was friendly and helpful. Our only complaint was that the beach (steps from the hotel) was pretty gross -- garbage strewn everywhere. It was nicer down towards the pier, but crowded.

“Chilly service, average food, nice gardens”

While I did not stay at this hotel, I did frequent the restaurant and bar a few times. On a positive note, the gardens and main areas are quite lovely. However, the attitude of the staff and owners leaves a lot to be desired; it is not their pleasure to serve you, it is their chore . The place is overrun by cliquey geratrics during happy hour and the bar area is loud and disorganized. The food served is only ok - I guess compared to other restaurants in the area it is average. For such a lovely setting, the whole vibe is negative... which is further enhanced by the sour puss faces of the staff!

“If Only it Were on the Beach”

Hotel Yakunah is a lovely property. My husband and I stayed there for a two night getaway while touring the Yucatan. The pool and grounds are meticulously maintained. Our room was large and clean, the bed was comfortable, and the service was terrific. The owners are friendly and accommodating. They have a wonderful "Mi Casa es Su Casa" attitude and made our stay very pleasant. The mix of Colonial architecture with Mayan decor takes some getting used to, but overall Yakunah truly is the best place to stay in Progreso. Being an ocean-lover, I would have preferred if it had been on the beach, but the hotel is so nice that it was worth the very short walk to the beach.

“Beautiful building, but some issues”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 April 2011

This building in which this hotel is housed is truly beautiful. It has high ceilings with fantastic tile floors, each room having a different design, stained glass windows, beautiful antique light fixtures. It's nicely decorated, both inside and out. There's a small pool, with beautiful plantings, seating, etc. around. Our room was large and light, with much character. Being inside the building gives one a sense of history and luxury at the same time.

However, the location is not the best, although I don't know that there is a "best" place in Progreso. It's located on a dirt road, with a wide variety of types of buildings nearby, ranging from from large, beautiful homes to literally piles of rubble. This made our arrival a bit nervous, and the owner's "welcome" (or lack of) didn't do much to make us feel more comfortable. However, once settled in, that ultimately had no impact on our stay.

The place was clean, except the tile in the shower floor seemed to have some mold growing. It was very offputting the first shower I took, but I got used to it, I guess. The breakfasts were excellent - they provided a very nice beginning to each of our days. The bed was extremely hard, but that seems to be the case of all beds in Mexico, except at the resorts. My biggest complaint was the result of their Saturday night gathering. They have a happy hour attended by a large number of Canadian and American snowbirds, which went quite late into the night. The noise that wafted into our room got quite annoying, since it kept me up long past the time I wanted to go to sleep, since our room was just off the bar area. My second biggest complaint was that, while the place says it has Wifi, you need a code from them to hook up. I tried it repeatedly, and the code they gave me never did work. They were totally unconcerned about my inability to connect, and I was never able to use the internet, which I needed, while there.

All in all, it was a nice place to stay, but we'd choose a different hotel should we ever decide to return to Progreso. There just wasn't anything particularly welcoming nor anything that made this place stand out as a great place to return to.

“We would love to stay again.”

We spent 4 weeks at the Hotel Yakunah in Jan and Feb 2011. We stayed in the apartment. The grounds were like a little oasis, lovely gardens, very tranquil. Gerben, the host is a terrific cook and Elke is a wonderful hostess. We met lots of fun people during our stay and had a great time. Ramon, the taxi driver the hotel hires for tours, will take you where ever you want to go at reasonable rates, a very nice man. Ray was always friendly and helpful. The apartment could do with a little updating.
