The Giant's Rest is a beautiful old English pub situated just outside Eastbourne on the South Downs and directly in front of the mystical chalk figure/hill carving The Long Man of Wilmington that gives the pub its name. Whilst a friendly and welcoming pub in the true sense, this establishment focuses on dining rather than drinking. The quality of the food probably does not aspire to that of 'gastropub' in that it is not finicky, over-prepared nor sparse in any sense. However, it is well cooked, tasty and filling. The menu choice is extensive and ever changing. The only danger here is arriving too late for lunch or dinner and finding all the tables taken.
The pub has two delightful bedrooms (not en-suite) that we used recently whilst attending the Glyndebourne Festival Opera - no more than 5 or 6 miles distant. Despite arriving back after 'closing time,' the Bar Manager was happy to serve drinks to his privileged residents. Next morning's breakfast was of the old-school variety - full English plus as much toast coffee and cereal as we could manage. Perfect. We shall certainly return and look forward very much to our next visit.
