“Memories of a visit 26 years ago and a longing to find the hotel again because i”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2009

26 years ago I was a newly qualified teacher working with a French lady teacher [Dominique] at a school in the Midlands. She wanted to see Scotland. Somehow we found "Willowburn" and I drove up in a battered Mini. The excellent food, the Isle, the friendlinest of all has remained with me all these years.

This New Year I spent with friends at the Oban YH. My first visit back after all these years had to take husband to Seil. I found obvious changes in development to the Isle and a "Willowburn" shut for winter, but we intend to return this year and enjoy its warm hospitality.

“It feels like home!”

This wonderful gem of a hotel offers a warm welcome by the owners, Jan and Chris. The setting is tranquil, the surroundings outstandingly beautiful and the high standard of food is a delight to look forward to after a day's outing. Chef Chris uses lots of locally sourced ingredients which adds something special to the culinary delights at dinner. Jan is a very attentive hostess (without being intrusive) who creates a special ambiance amongst her guests making them feel more like friends than paying clients. Breakfast is an amazing start to the day with it's cornucopia of beautifully tasting food. It's a joy to return to this hotel.

“Relaxed and friendly”

The Willowburn is a relaxed and friendly small hotel with fantastic views of Clachan Sound from most of the bedrooms and from the lounge and dining room. As you eat your tasty Scottish breakfast, you can watch the oyster catchers on the sea shore and dozens of small birds who visit the bird feeders in the tree outside the windows. The dinner menu has varied dishes, many made with local produce and the food prepared by Chris and served by Jan is delicious. There is also an interesting wine list.
An ideal spot for walks in beautiful scenery, we would recommend the Willowburn to those who like the informal atmosphere of a small hotel but enjoy their food.

Stayed at this hotel for my Husbands birthday and can only say that it was like being back at school. There is not an easy going feeling about this place anymore and it seems to be run like Stalag 14. No welcoming smile from the owner, food was certainly not as good as on two previous visits, and we would certainly not recommend this Hotel as we had done after other visits. Such a shame.

“Didn't stay but fantastic restaurant!”

Although we didn't stay at the Willowburn as residents, we have had dinner there on two separate occassions and both times have been exceptional. The setting is quiet and private, the ingredient's locally sourced and the menu and presentation are beyond improvement. An altogether wonderful experience. Highly recommended.
