My Wife and I like a more non-conventional approach to travel where we truly experience the essence of a location, it's people and history. One of our greatest finds ever is the Castello del Poggiarello di Stigliano, just south of Sienna in the heart of Tuscany. My wife and I have stayed at Castello Stigliano twice, four years apart. It was the most wonderful experience, an experience of a lifetime. The Castle owner, Andrea Borracelli, is one of the most knowledgeable people we've ever met. He knows the history of Italy and especially Tuscany more than most History professors. He is very generous to spend time with us and give us great recommendations on places to see and visit and give us the "inside story" on the history etc. He was filled with recommendations on really anything we wanted to do.
The accomodations were also excellent. Each of his rooms is decorated in period Antiques of superb quality. The Castle was built in the 1200's and you certainly get the feel of that era in Stigliano. We went in Febuary both trips which was great, but he has a new pool for summer use.
Lastly, I would strongly suggest renting a car. Even as non-seasoned European travelers, we found driving easy and very rewarding in that we had no schedule and could drive to many Tuscan destinations and see the small country towns on the way and the dramatic visitas over the hilly countryside. Stigliano is situated in a great spot to venture out on day trips to all kinds of interesting towns cities and antiquities. Sienna is 10 minutes north and offers all the Amenities of an Italian city.
We would highly recommend the accomodations which we found very affordable compared to other options. Would be happy to answer any questions.
