As a frequent visitor over the last 6 months, I recommend the Derrin House as a "home from home". The hosts are pleasant, helpful and very obliging - particularly as I often arrive late but having given advance notice -this is never a problem. As a business traveller this is one of the best guest houses I've stayed in - comfortable rooms - easy parking and home cooked tasty breakfast.

“Fabulous!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

I have stayed in many guest houses over the years and can honestly say Derrin house is by far the best. !
My lovely en-suite room was immaculate, clean, tidy and well furnished and everything worked! Plus there was ample tea, coffee and milk.
The guest house as a whole was exactly the same and the breakfast...wow! cooked to order on the morning with all the trimmings including the lovely Irish soda bread! exactly what i needed before setting off out for the day. There is absolutely loads to do locally and you are only a half hour drive from Belfast city too. I must mention my hosts, Ivy and Siebe, they are helpful, polite and really looked after me, thank you both!
I will be back.

Room Tip: Ivy and Siebe are very accomodating (pardon the pun) you tell them what you want and they do their b...

Thank you for your lovely review. Just to clarify, we serve potato bread not soda bread. There isn't room on the plate for the two varieties. Look forward to welcoming you back.

“Very best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

I visited Larne after 43years away. I was with my two sons. They are both grown men so as you can guess I`m no Spring Chicken. After the first night after being asked by Ivy about how I slept Iexplained I had become used to a separate bed. I was immediately offered another room separate from my sons at a reduced rate. How`s that for Service? The food was good and service excellent. Only problem was showering but if you are taller than average you must expect to have some inconvenience. Ivy rang me when we were on route to check what time we would arrive to ensure that there was someone there to greet us. Certaimly worth reviewing and recommendation.

Room Tip: If you need a special room ask.

“There are only two rules... Don't be noisy and obey all the rules!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

I stayed at the Derrin with my friend and whilst the room was VERY clean it was absolutely freezing. When I asked the the lady of the house she said that I had said I'd be there at 3pm and it was now 4pm so the heating had been switched off because "we were late". This didn't bode well. We turned on the TV and it didn't work no major problem as we told her but it should have been checked. Then when we were heading out for the evening (wearing dinner jackets as we were off to a formal evening event locally) we were told not to make too much noise on our return as she had other guests!
Don't get me wrong I see her point but I'm in my mid forties and my pal is in his early sixties and we were dressed as if we were going to a "penguins" only night, and were hardly likely to come in doing the "conga".
Breakfast on the Sunday was a little disappointing as there was no Soda bread (an NI institution) and appeared to have been cooked and left sitting about awaiting our arrival. We had to tell her what we wanted the night before which adds to my belief in the "pre-cooked" idea. There were rules about this too even though it was Sunday we had to have it between 8am and 9am and be out of our room by 10.30am which all seemed a little early.
In the end It was cheap (£55 for a small twin) and very clean but like some of the other reviewers it's some were to stay if you need to stay in Larne, I didn't feel like like I'd want to stay for more than one night.

When we checked you out, you both said what a lovely place we had and your friend added that he would like to turn with a group of fellow Masons. I was therefore so surprised to read your negative review that I phoned you to discuss it. You explained that the strapline There are only Two Rules was a reference to a comedy show and that this was intended to be "humourous" and pointed out that I could do a manage response, so here goes.
Regarding the noise issue. We were chatting in the hall to you both before you went out for about 10 minutes and my exact words to you were: "If you are going to be late back, would you mind coming in quietly as we have other guests?" So it was a polite request, not a "rule".
The only two "rules" you came up against were breakfast and check out times and every accommodation has these. We used to do a later breakfast at weekends but found that guests wanted it earlier, so changed times to suit. We do our best to accommodate people who want a later check out (see previous Trip Advisor comments on this).
In seven years of trading, we have received numerous compliments on our breakfast. You are the only person who has ever complained!
I am truly sorry for checking you into a cold room. I did not intend to imply that the room was cold because you were late. It transpires that the radiator wasn't working to full capacity. This has now been addressed. The TV would have been fixed straight away if you had requested this.
Thank you for saying the room was very clean and inexpensive.

Friendly and organised, after staying two nights seperated by a trip around NI we found the standard of accommodation first class especially so at the Derrin Guest house. The location makes it easyto visit all parts of the north and the coast road needs to be driven/riden to be believed. Highly recommended.
