“The most amazing venue and hospitality for our dream Wedding!”

We stayed here at the end of January to get married and really cannot praise it enough! There were 16 of us in our party ranging in age from 20 to 75, we stayed for four nights and all had a fantastic time. Having landed in Ivalo airport after a long day travelling our transfer to the igloo village was smooth and everyone was checked in and dropped off by their cabin no problem. We weren’t sure what to expect given the location high in the Arctic Circle but the food each night was very good and included fresh vegetables and salads; they catered very well for a large group that included vegetarians. There are also some great drinks and cocktails served in the piano bar, at reasonable prices too. The sledges by the main reception building are a great idea for getting around and you are given a map when you arrive so you know where everything is. The board in reception clearly displays the pick up times for activities and the airport which works well.

Accommodation: we treated ourselves to a Queen Suite and were very glad we did, it was so clean and luxurious – under floor heating, roll top bath, canopy four poster bed, huge walk in shower, sauna and of course the outdoor hot tub, we didn’t want to leave! The party was always in our cabin so everyone could use our fantastic facilities. Our guests all opted for standard cabins and other than a few minor issues such as light bulbs that needed changing and a problem with heating (that was swiftly fixed) they were all happy. The kitchenettes are a definite plus; we would suggest bringing items like tea bags, hot chocolate sachets, biscuits and pasta/porridge pots with you to avoid having to go into town for supplies. We had a glass igloo on our wedding night and were surprised how warm, clean and spacious they are with gorgeous views over the hills.

Our wedding: we had been in touch with Mari for a number of months in the run up to our day and she was always very helpful and accommodating. On the day we were also looked after by Pum and Dwee, who were both fantastic. We were the first to be married in the Ice Chapel as it was late being built due to the mild winter but we had a perfect day and everything ran efficiently and was very well organised – from the right colour flowers in the chapel to our reindeer and sleigh transport. We had brought many things with us such as decorations, candles, place cards etc and all were laid out just as we had requested and looked after and packed away for us to collect the following day. The owner also came to wish us congratulations and present us with a gift which was a lovely touch and very personal – not the sort of thing you would get from a hotel chain. We had a private room for our reception and the food on our wedding day was brilliant, an obvious difference in presentation from the other days we ate – even different cutlery and glasses were used for our special occasion. We had chosen our wines and champagne ahead of time and the service was great, never an empty glass. We turned the music up for dancing quite late into the evening but this wasn’t problem, we left the main building just before 1am. We really couldn’t have asked for more from our day!

Activities: we had pre-booked all activities through our agent (Travelbee) and chose the 2 hour husky trip, 2 hour evening reindeer sleigh trip, and 4 hour snowmobile trip. The huskys were great fun and the guides were very knowledgeable and friendly, there is opportunity to swap with your partner so you can both try driving the sleigh and the scenery is beautiful. The only down side is that the dogs are a little smelly and do their ‘business’ on the run! The evening reindeer sleigh ride was very sedate, 2 hours was long enough even with a stop half way for a hot drink around the fire. We deliberately chose an evening ride in the hope of seeing the Northern Lights and they didn’t disappoint – absolutely stunning a real once in a lifetime moment. The snowmobiling was by far the best activity; we covered 40km and stopped for lunch half way (a lovely salmon and potato soup/chowder with toasted cheese sandwiches) the guides were great and let us open them up on the way back, we got up to speeds of 80kmph. We stopped up high on a hill with views reaching over to Russia – stunning, but with the wind chill it was -40c!

Tips: do the husky trip in the morning when the tracks are clear of poo, take one of the free newspapers in the reception porch area to help you get your fire started – and read the instructions on the back of the map so you don’t get smoked out of your cabin! Make sure you have a sledge or two outside your cabin for fun and taking your luggage back the day you leave. If going during winter take as many thermals as possible, the temperature got down to -26c whilst we were there. We would also recommend silk glove and sock liners, balaclavas, and hand warmers.

General: we would have to agree with some reviews that say the reception area is a little chaotic but this takes nothing away from your experience. We did not once witness the owner being rude to anyone, staff or guests, and all staff were very friendly and helpful. Whenever we saw him he always had time to speak and when we left he said farewell to everyone individually. Upon checkout we didn’t find any errors or ‘hidden charges’ in our final bill which other reviews have mentioned. The reviews that moan about no room service and having to transport their own luggage on sledges; all we would say is you need to remember where in the world you are and enter into the spirit of this wonderful and unique place. It may be on the expensive side but it is a true one off experience and we would thoroughly recommend it.

We had 3 nights at Kakslauttanen in Feb. 2 nights in a cabin and 1 in a glass igloo. On arrival we were pointed towards our cabin, if you are given cabin 9 make sure they take you too the door as we did have difficulty finding it ( we were not the only ones) and as it was -24. Yes you have to take your luggage on a sled but thats part of the fun. The cabin was very nice and very warm. The glass igloo is a great experience. We also went on a husky safari which was amazing, though v cold. The food was ok, the staff were friendly. We saw the Northern lights on 2 of our 3 nights and both times it was about midnight so you may have to stay up ;-)
Our only complaint, though its not really a complaint, was that everything was done in a small area near the main door. Check in, check out, buy things, get drinks, wait for husky, reindeer rides and taxi to the airport, making it very crowded at certain times. We had a great time and would certainly stay there again.

Room Tip: Cabin 9 faces north so you can lie in bed and look out the window waiting for the lights. Though all...

“Great, but the location makes it expensive”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

We had an absolutely amazing time - the scenery is beautiful, the activities are amazing, the Northern Lights were stunning, and our accommodation was more than satisfactory.

However, be aware that you are paying a premium for the location north of the Arctic circle in a beautiful frozen forest. For this reason, everything costs more. In particular, you do not get the level of service you would expect from a city hotel in the same price range. Staying in Kakslauttanen is a bit as much of an adventure as it is a resort. Once you understand this, the reviews on this site start to make sense. Also bear in mind when budgeting that to get the most out of your stay you will definitely want to do an extra excursion most days at a cost of EUR100-150 per person.

Specifics:

Cabins - really good, spacious, warm, with attractive fires and a good sauna.
Igloos - definitely recommend staying one night (or more) in a glass igloo

Restaurant - the food is hearty rather than fine, and wine is expensive, but we enjoyed all our
meals. At breakfast most people have cold meat, ham, and cereal, but the best option is pickled herring and smoked salmon if you're wiling to be a little adventurous with your pallette.

Activities - we went husky sledding, reindeer sledding, and snowmobiling - all great fun. It was about -30C most of the time and additional winter equipment was provided. You need to have a driving licence for snowmobiling but in fact no-one checks. Lunch was provided as part of the activities and was on each day traditional Lappish salmon soup. This is very tasty if you like salmon soup.

Northern Lights - these were really only out on the last night of our stay, when they were pretty amazing. You are at the mercy of solar activity and the weather.

Service - I'd characterize this as "efficient" rather than "attentive". Staff were friendly and helpful but very busy, to the point where they don't have quite enough time to deal with all the customers at busy times. There are no staff to carry bags, show you to your cabin or fill up your firewood (we enjoyed pulling our own bags along on a sled, but you might not!) Also, service at dinner is very prompt and some people felt rushed.

In short - we would definitely recommend it and it's a wonderful experience. But bear in mind that you can't stay here on the cheap, and that no-one will be carrying your bags for you.

“It could have been so much better...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

It's a real shame - the hotel itself is great - the log cabins are kind of retro cool, the glass igloos amazing to spend a night in, the traditional house - well, traditional - but the hotel is let down by the management.

There seems to be no service culture at the hotel - the staff are friendly and helpful but there are so many small things that could improve a stay here. Firstly, there's no meet and greet that tells guests about the hotel, how the rooms work (we lit a fire smoked out the room and then it got so cold as the freezing air came shooting down the chimney as the fire died down), we came to see the Northern Lights but nobody told us at any point how to best view them, so much so that we asked a waitress in the restaurant who told us that they wouldn't be visible tonight as it was too light - we took it as gospel, went to bed and missed the best show of the time we were there. A bell was meant to ring to warn guests but the person in charge missed it.

As other reviewers said it is up to the guests to drag their luggage on sleds to their cabins - I don't need a bell boy but someone to come with me to show me the ropes.

One thing everyone has picked up on is the quality of the food - it is atrocious, think school dinners - if you go a la carte the food appears to be unfrozen and microwaved - don't expect good things at all.

Maybe it was our fault for not pinning someone down and asking all the right questions but when you are spending several hundred euros a night you expect some sort of service that takes instructions from a responsible management team.

All that said - I enjoyed myself - it might have been a little touristy but the cross-country skiing was great, the night-time aurora hunting snow mobile trip was a highlight, the glass igloos, the brief glimpses of the northern lights was great.

Kakslauttanen is an exercise in printing money for the owners - if only they paid a little more attention to the detail of the place and the way that guests are looked after they could make it a truly magical experience.

BTW I am the publisher of a series of global travel guides, I have spent the last decade reviewing hotels, editing guides and observing the travel industry from the inside and this is the first time I have been truly compelled to write something online and will also be voicing my thoughts to the management.

I have been to the igloo village resort with great expectation but it turned out to be a tiring and
Stressfull holiday for me.the rooms are not clean especially the showers and not hot water
Especially when it is -25 outside and not having hot water was very much Stressfull
I ended my stay there when I was told to carry the woods for the fire place myself all the way to
My cabin.Very poor service from the staff .You have to carry your luggages yourself to your
Cabin.Food quality not good and overall not worthy for the price at all....Except the staff no one saw the northern lights since they were supposed to ring the bell to alert the customers about it.i think it is a waste for that everybody would like to experience it..

Room Tip: Glass igloo rooms are better value for the price and the experience
