“Outstanding Experience!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 June 2008

When I began a search for lodges that could offer outstanding coffee tours and who exemplified the best in terms of sustainability and environmental awareness, I knew I was asking a lot. El Retono Eco-Lodge exceeded all my expectations.

The lodge is a gem in a beautiful region. It makes a very light footprint on the landscape, but that footprint is, as all of the reviews have indicated, very special. Debbie Mounts (co-owner) is a wealth of information and provides the visitor with everything one could want; she also has a terrific staff (as other reviews also indicate, so I won't repeat).

During our week long stay we had the opportunity to visit working coffee farms, Xalapa and the Anthropology museum, the fabulous Xico waterfalls, haciendas and so much more. Debbie's recommendations and arrangements (including spa treatments) were outstanding.

If you're interested in experiencing the best in Mexican coffee, the rich cultural heritage of the region, and the beauty of the local community in an environmentally responsible manner, El Retono is ideal.

Roughly translated "retono" means new sprout or new growth. It's the perfect name for a place that gave us a new perspective on things!

  • Liked — That is was a sustainable, environmentally responsible, beautiful lodge
  • Disliked — nothing--it was even more than we expected.

“I want to go back there, soon!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 April 2008

Tucked in the middle of abundant vegetation and lovely flowers the comfortable and well designed cabins are a surprise. Fili and Carmen took good care of us. She is an amazing cook and fed us wonderful breakfasts, he is a fantastic caretaker for the grounds.
The four of us enjoyed our stay there and we will be back! The area offers lots of attractions, the climate is very nice and the coffee . . oh my!

“unique lodging”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 March 2008

We stayed at El Retono for four nights and were enchanted! One is unsure what to expect at an eco-lodge, but our rooms were very clean and well-appointed with local beautiful bamboo furnishings and linens. Our rooms were a suite, which was perfect for my husband and I and our grown daughter. Our breakfast always included fresh fruit, juice and wonderful traditional Mexican dishes. The staff is friendly, helpful and industrious. The owners were unfailing in helping us discover this beautiful area and we were so grateful for their help with area restaurants and sights to see. We did alot of exploring the area, which is like a cross between the Scottish Highlands and Peruvian Andes. So many species of birds and foliage it took your breath away. Coatepec is so charming and unspoiled with the friendliest people we've encountered in Mexico. Be sure to brush up on your Spainish, though most shops and restaurants can help with some English. This is a place you will not soon forget!

“Forget the snow and ice”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 March 2008

After leaving the snow, ice and stress of daily life, the walk into El Renono was a reminder of nature and self. I was taken by the trees, the creek. the bamboo and mostly the fragrance of flowers. The staff was charming, the rooms are most beautiful. It is a special place for anyone looking for solace.
It is also a nice walk into town.
Nuturing and peaceful
And if you miss snow capped mountains, look up!

It is also a great place for group tours with all the outside activities in the area.

El Retoño exceeded our high expectations. Set in pristine forest, the accomodations are lovely. At night you are wrapped in silence. Bird calls wake you in the morning. The staff was excellent. All of this within a half hour´s walk of the centro of charming Coatepec.

Upon arrival we immediately extended our stay by one night. We wish we could have stayed longer and look forward to a return visit.
