We stayed on Dominica for well over a week and stayed at three places. We upgraded from the Portsmouth Beach Hotel to the Picard Beach Cottages and we should have done this much sooner.

These are nice little cottages right along the beach, with a row of cottages behind those that have a direct view of the ocean. The cottages are nice with a nice living space, full kitchen, large bathroom, shower and separate bedroom. The air conditioner worked well and the place has glass windows that really help keep the humidity out.

All are single floor units and were excellent! Stay here, not the hotel! And each was lived in by a star or other person involved in the filming of the movie "Pirates of the Caribbean". The film producer lived in ours. Woo hoo!

We will stay here again!

When we left here and being stranded by American Airlines, we stayed at the Pagua Bay Cottages in Marigot.

Stayed there for just one night. As another review noted - it is pricey. But if you're into the rustic, LOST (yup, the TV series) vibe, this is your place.

But it was a little too rustic for me. Highlight was the mouse that was dancing on my bathroom sink.

Staff are amazing though. Top class customer service from a boutique establishment.

I actually reserved a room at the Portsmouth Beach Hotel and was very pleasantly surprised when they put us in the adjacent cottages. It was during off-season and they said they are willing to offer the cottages at discounts to those who ask. The cottages were basic but clean and comfortable. We rented snorkels for a half day at a nearby dive shop and swam around the reef right in front of the hotel. The beach is black sand but the water is clear and nice. There is an IGA grocery store about a five minute walk away and there are frequent buses that pass by. If you take a bus from Roseau, ask the driver to drop you off at the hotel as it is located before you get into town.

I was here in August 2011 but under the title 'when did you stay..." it won't give me that option so I said June because despite all the bad reviews about the state of repair the whole place must have been renovated because I didn't see it. Everything was clean, staff were very polite and helpful. The students were on summer break so the beach was fairly peaceful. I had an amazingly wonderful time and would recommend staying there.
