We found ourselves in Punta Allen by accident, having driven through the nature reserve from Tulum. On the way, we stopped at the Visitor Centre and enjoyed the lagoon, and stopped at some beaches along the way. It was a very long, slow, and extremely bumpy drive, and we ended up, hot and hungry, unexpectedly in this relatively unattractive little town, at the end of the road as far as you can go. There are places that offer seafood in Punta Allen, but that's not what we wanted. Somehow we discovered the extremely friendly proprietor, Mike, gardening in the back yard, and he offered to make us a salad and steamed vegetables. Fresh, delicious and most welcome! Later, he showed us the rooms he rents out (large, with full bathrooms) and we knew if we ever came back again, that's where we'd stay.
