“Disastrous”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 April 2008

We had booked this hotel for 7 nights in April. The website was beautiful and we bought it. It is located in a very remote area approx 2 KM from Murviel les Beziers and 20 minutes from Beziers itself. On arrival the lady at the reception was very polite and we felt this could be nice. The room was very spacious and it all looked fine. The first night we decided to eat in the "Gastronomic" restaurant. We were having an aperitif outside and the owner, a polite Dutch gentleman, was explaining how he came to buy the place and their plans to be the first 4 star restaurant in the area and that thye were also thinking of increasing the size of the hotel. We felt that this must be good as the guy seemed to be genuinely interested in his business.

What a disaster. I ordered my meat rare and it came like the sole of a shoe. My wife's lamb was more bone than meat. The wine was relatively expensive. The waitress as very sweet and polite but even though there were only 3 tables (9 people in total) she was over her head. She also advised that there was only 1 other restaurant within a 10KM radius so either you don't drink while eating and be the constant designated driver or pay a fortune in taxis that charge you for coming out ... Restaurant was 0 out of 10.

Next morning we had a shower and spent 10 minutes mopping up the bathroom. There is no shower curtain or door so the water went everywhere.

We went into Beziers that afternoon and decided that it would b best to set up base there or Narbonne etc for the remainder of our 12 day holiday. On our return to the hotel we advised them that we were leaving the next day. They had no phone access (first day it was the same) and they had no (promised / advertised) wi fi access. I had to call the booking company in the UK myself and tell them that we were leaving the next day which was obviously my own cost. The (originally polite) lady was now not a happy bunny at all...

Overall a no no and major disappointment. They have a lot of work to do if they are to achieve the basics in their goal of being a 4 star... (or even a 2 star)

“A big disapointment”

We have just returned from the lovely area of Languedoc Roussillon, from North of Beziers in the vineyards to the lively city of Montpellier. It was a first time for us. We were looking forward to stay in the hotel castle Chateau Saint Martn in Murviel sourrounded by vineyards. The choice for accomodation in this area is very limited. The three stars hotel was a major disapointment. Lack of comfort in the bedroom with pellows that had done their times over and over and a bathroom with a shower only and a broken shower head that woul not stayed in the wall. The room was huge but had a cold feel with no atmosphere, no charm or redeeming feature but the view on the countryside. The food at the restaurant was also a big disapointment in the way that all the starters, main courses and deserts were very heavy. All starters and mains courses, meat or fish, were covered with sauces. Not a great way to have a taste of the local fresh produces, if any fresh produces were used in the cooking. No possibility to have a light meal, even asking for a simple ice cream-sorbet as a desert was refused. And finally, I had booked for a junior suite but was allocated a superior room as I was complaining about the lack of a bath in a junior suite. No apology and I wonder what a standard room might be. Conclusion: an old castle with no charm and no services where you cannot wait to leave, certainly not a three stars hotel. We limited our stay to two nights instead of three and went happily to the Sofitel in Montpellier. A heaven of luxury, charm, care and attention from friendly staff, from the cleaning lady up to the manager. I highly recommend a stay at the Sofitel.
I am French and my husband is Irish-American.

“Could be amazing but..........”

This place could be amazing but could seriously do with some investment. The building itslef is quite beautiful, but the rroms are quite old-fashioned and not very cosy. It could do with some modernisation and fresh painting.
It's setting is beutiful and is quite remote, so you will need a car to get there!
I wouldn't go back again.

“Lovely but remote”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 April 2007

The chateau is in a rural location, about 20 minutes drive from Béziers. For a quiet, relaxing stay, it is a good choice if you can get a good rate. For sightseeing, it is poorly located as it is too far from public transportation and major sites. If you have a car, this may be less of an issue. A cab from Béziers to the chateau is 38 Euro. A bus offers a limited schedule from Murviel les Béziers to Béziers at about 4 Euro per person.

The chateau offers large, attractive, well-appointed rooms. There is a pool but it is not always available - check in advance. The breakfast buffet is good but expensive (about 13 Euro) if not included in the room rate. There is a restaurant that offers lunch and dinner as well, though we did not try these meals. Service is pleasant but plan on carrying your own bags up the staircases. Also, plan on an early rise - the birds are incredibly noisy and will be sure to wake you up.
