“OK for quick meal...more focus on the food prep would help”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

3 of us went for a quickish lunch...we got what we went for...the grilled goats cheese was good...the braised pigs cheek as part of my 13 Euro set menu was also in fact very good...the veal was a little tough (23 euro menu)...the mange tout were boiled to death...

If you find something of interest, the 13 euro set menu is good value, the 23 euro less so...there was a third menu but I forget the price (more expensive)...

Let's be fair here...overall the food was OK...it could have been slightly better prepared, the service was OK and the decor/ambiance was fine....we spent 72 Euro for 3 with coffee but no alcohol. We probably did not need the 3 courses for our lunch...

Room Tip: We did not stay here....

“SHOCKING SERVICE”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 September 2011

Unbelievably putrid and shocking service. The hotel room was as expected for a basic logis 2 star, no complaints about the cleanliness of the room or the fact you couldn't swing a mouse, never mind a cat about the room, akin to that and actually possibly featured in the film Being John Malcovich or possibly even the Cabinet of Doctor Caligari. You get what you pay for. However I did pay for a meal which I wouldn't feed to my neighbours cat, and believe me she can eat a dish of fetid dirt and be happily purring away. The meal was a steak of some description, believe me I have travelled all over the world and I am quite familiar with different cuts and different methods of cooking steak. This by comparison to some ring burning experiences in Delhi et al was horrific, and they had the audacity to charge me for it. Totally appalled and certainly wouldn't recommend staying here to anyone. Oh, and watch out for the building works at the rear and also the rear of builders en plein view.

Room Tip: Don't bother!

“Pleasant enough, not cheap.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 September 2011

We stayed at this hotel on our way to Moustey and the horrendous Hotel Le Domaine!

The hotel is in an old building and so there are compromises but the town is quiet and the car was quite safe parked in the square outside the hotel. In fact, the town was so quiet we wondered where all the people had gone - perhaps they were on holiday as well. We were greeted in English and taken to our room which was the suite on the top floor. It was quite comfortable but we had to go up two steep flights of stairs which was OK for us but if you were elderly it could be a problem. The room was cosy, the bathroom was even more cosy with no window for fresh air but we had a good night's sleep until around 7 am when they started emptying bins outside. The TV only had French stations.

We ate at the hotel and the meal was OK but no potato or chips which seemed a bit odd. The breakfast was OK but nothing exciting. The English family at the next table were complaining about noise from another room during the night but it wasn't us as we were asleep and luckily didn't have a room above us as we were on the top floor. Total price was close to 200 Euros which was not cheap but it was quiet (until 7am), comfortable and clean.

Room Tip: Creaky floorboards so go for the top floor if you can manage the stairs!

“What a waste of money.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 August 2011

Ok ish hotel in a nice location. However the food in the restaurant was very disappointing. We went for the more expencive menu at 36 Euros as we were treating ourselves. The main course was very bland and had no taste. We were so disappointed that we did not eat it and complained. Nothing happened even though the waiter said he would go and speak to the chef about it. No apology and no replacement .We were most surprised when we were simply served our cheese. I was then given a piece of blue cheese which was just the end of the cheese and I had to ask for some more. Could not believe i was being served with the end of the cheese. If it had been in my fridge at home i would have thrown it out.

Was hoping for a good pudding but the pastry was stale the fruit was not fresh and the only taste was from some ice cream. We both could not be bothered to try and force our way into the pastry.
Instead of apologising and offering an alternative the waiter was quite argumentative and defensive and said 12 other people had eaten what we had and no one had complained. A lot of the guests were English and one thing he should learn is quite often English people do not complain. For a menu Gourmand at 36 Euros you would expect something extra special and of very good quality. I explained that I have in fact eaten better plat du jours at 10€50.

It's the first time in 11 years of living in France that I have left a restaurant still feeling hungry, having in essence only eaten a starter and a bit of cheese - for 36€!

To top it all off when we checked out they tried to overcharge us for the room.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front very noisy and tiny shower room

“perfect charm for regular return and the best cappacino”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2011

Olivier has done a fabulous job with his outdoor patio dining in the square of the "ideal Cite" built by Cardinal Richelieu. Cousin Al had a few problems getting up the stairs to the first refurbed rooms 2 years ago, but this year things are really on the move. Even the workmen gutting the 400 year old wing next to the city gate, were cheerful and not too noisy. It is hard to find a good cuppacino, as most of the local bars serve a chantilly mousse instead of froth, but his is the exeption. We are so thrilled that Olivier's consistent quality and the ongoing development of Museums and tours in the village make family trips a real delight
