“Friendly, welcoming staff”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

I have stayed here twice in two weeks for work and both times have been welcomed by Chris who has been very friendly and carried my bags to my room and made sure I felt very at home.

On my first stay I was in room two which was nice and big, warm with everything you need. Lovely Molton Brown toiletries in the bathroom and warm towels courtesy of the heated towel rail. The bed was comfortable and the room quite modern.

On my second stay I was disappointed with my room (6), it was smaller which isnt necessarily a problem but it was freezing, the tiled bathroom never warmed through and the heated towel rail was barely warm. The bedroom was cold despite having an extra electric heater and on the basis of this I had a really bad nights sleep.

Had I not stayed here the previous week I would have been put off staying here again however, breakfast on both days was lovely and the same lady served me and remembered me from the first time and was very friendly. I have only eaten dinner once but it was lovely; very professional and luxurious - I was expecting just 'normal' pub grub so was pleasantly surprised by the menu.

There is free wifi but it is a bit hit and miss as is mobile phone reception so if you are staying here for business and will be relying on your laptop and phone then be warned. You can use to computer at reception for research and there are phones in the rooms but as you would expect call charges are expensive.

I will no doubt be staying here again but I will be requesting either room 2 or one that is at least warm!

Room Tip: Ask for a warm room and one that is in the main building and not the annex.

Thank you for your comments. We obviously have an issue with room 6 heating which I will be attending to, although not normally an issue through the year, the recent cold snap has been a challenge. We have had all our WIFI aerials/hubs re-set and the connection should now not be an issue.

“Wheat sheaf”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

We received a very warm welcome on arrival but the room was quite chilly . We had booked in advance and were expected , so think that the heating should have been on . We booked a double room , but there was only one bedside lamp . There were lots of different drinks available to prepare , plus biscuits . The room was exceptionally clean and the bed and pillows wonderfully comfy . A shower cap would have been nice , and although the soap and shampoo were of a good quality , it was impossible to read which product was which in the shower as they were fixed to the wall and they were too high !! Quite difficult to extract the products if one is not very tall .There was no hair conditioner . Breakfast was good , but the bacon was

overdone . We did not eat supper at the hotel .

Room Tip: Choose a room away from the front , as we were woken up very early in the morning

Thank you for the feedback. Policy on room heating is turned on at 1pm for arrivals from 2pm, so it appears that your radiators may not have been set right by house-keeping staff. We will review heights of each room shower fittings in light of your comments and will add shower caps to room supplies.

“Friendly cosy hotel.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2011 via mobile

Stayed here one night with my husband, daughter and fiancé. Evening meal was delicious and also superb breakfast, with excellent service. Rooms were first class. Unfortunately it was a very wild windy night and having to go outdoors to our annexe rooms was a little inconvenient.

“Battered Salmon???”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 December 2011

How a so-called respectable restaurant could cover such a regal fish as the Salmon in cheap oily batter. Overpriced and under quality.
Room was ok though and the staff helpful.

Thank you for your comments and are pleased your stay was comfortable and the staff looked after you. In regards to the fish, we understand this dish does not suit everyone and is very occasionally used. In fact we have several fish dishes on the blackboard at any one time, such as monkfish, turbot, dover sole - to reflect the days catch from Eyemouth. Unusual then that you decided to select this dish rather than something that would better suit your taste.

The batter is a beer batter and is not oily. Fish prices are currently expensive, having increased by £2 to £3 per kilo in the last month alone. (Nov 2011)

“Jewel of the Borders”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 November 2011

Without doubt the best short break available for anyone wishing to recharge their batteries in a convivial atmosphere whilst having the best of service, accommodation and food available in the whole Borders region. The Wheatsheaf at Swinton offers the ultimate reason for disappearing from the reality of today's stressful world and indulging oneself in excellent food, wine and tastefully decorated rooms. This is linked with the availability of expert local knowledge of Fishing and Shooting if so desired. Personally my Wife and I found and experienced the ultimate off season break with food to die for staff to cry for.

Room Tip: 8 if disabled
