“Excellent value for money”

Fabulous location, and apartment much better than I expected for the price. Clean and tidy and spacious. I was very glad that towels were only changed once and linen not at all during the week, given that the island suffers from a severe water shortage. Good cooking facilities, nice pool area, handy restaurant. Fornells is lovely. I was glad to have a hire car, otherwise it would have been a bit limiting.
The bin men in the night I could certainly have done without! But I was happy to trade a few minutes disturbed sleep for the sea view. What a wonderful thing to wake up to in the morning. I would go again, and this time pay for a larger apartment with a balcony overlooking the sea.

“Two stars? Halve it!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2010

Looking out from my bedroom window in my Ca'n Digus apartment, peering beyond the row of recycle bins, I can see, to my delight, the vast expanse of the Mediterranean; it's dotted here and there by people sailing, wind surfing, and, craziest of all, kayaking. This view sums up Ca'n Digus; it longs for greatness, but there's always that row of recycle bins sitting obstinately in its way.
I arrived, girlfriend in tow, rather late at night, say around 11.00pm. This is when Menorcan people start doing things; during the day they mope around like half drugged sheep, probably wondering why they bothered to drag themselves from their siestas in the first place. Anyway, because of their intolerance for the sun and their love for the moon, Ca'n Digus staff, at 11.00pm, are somewhere else; responsibility for guests transfers itself to the restaurant next door which, it transpires, is not affiliated with the hotel at all. A waiter will let you into your room but, as might be expected, they won't bother providing a warm welcome; you'll be lucky if you are rewarded with something more than a grunt. Anyway, into your room you'll tumble; straight into your bed, after a strenuous jouney, for a good night's sleep. Except, if you are at the front of the hotel, close to the aforementioned row of recycle bins, you'll be rather annoyed to discover that these are emptied throughout the night. One truck does not pick up everything; several trucks will arrive to independantly collect paper, bottles, cans and clothes. The bottle truck is worst; the sound of glass smashing at three in the morning is something close to horrific.
If you want to complain about the night's events or, indeed, ask the hotel staff about anything, you'll have to make an extra special effort. Most of the time the reception is shut; it opens at specific times and for no more than minutes at a time. The staff spend the rest of their hours, presumably, sleeping.
This lack of work leads to other problems; in our two week stay our room was cleaned once. Worst of all, our toilet roll was never replaced; I had to buy my own or, during more desparate times, steal it from the restaurant's restroom. One curious thing to note; there were always clean towels. These are delivered surreptitiously, appearing at random times throughout the day, as if the hotel has some kind of friendly spectre who cannot abide dirty towels. All I can say is, the spectre needs to extend his reach.
The rooms are comfortable enough. You're provided with chairs, a sofa, a table; a kitchen with gas cooker, sink and dinner utensils; a bathroom with shower, toilet and sink; and a bedroom with a double bed which is actually two single beds pushed together. Needless to say, they don't stay together; you'll wake up with the feeling that, during the night, you had a spat with your loved one and, in a moment of pure anger, pushed your half of the bed away from their's. Incidentally, if you do happen to have an argument in the middle of the night with your loved one, you can always push your half of the bed away from theirs.
All ground floor rooms open onto the pool area; this is fairly small and is populated mainly by british people all making rediculously grand and pompous comments such as, "I holiday here every year...for a month." Surely, it is this class of clientele who are responsible for the cost of the rooms; Ca'n Digus charges four star rates for a two star hotel. Writing that makes me laugh; surely the two stars are self applied; Ca'n Digus deserves nothing more than one.
Ca'n Digus' one saving grace is its location. It's on the sea front; it's close to many restaurants (most of which, by the way, are terrible), and nearby, there is an excellent place where you can learn how to do all those wonderful water sports you can see, beyond the bins, from your bedroom window.

“Great Location in Fornells!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2010

We booked a last minute holiday in Fornells staying at the Ca’n Digus apartments. We arrived at 10:45pm on a Friday night, and our initial impression was not great due to the seemingly lack of a warm welcome that we got from the staff at the Sa Nansa bar/restaurant (not affiliated to the Ca’n Digus Apartments). Instead of being shown through to the reception area of Ca’n Digus (which is lovely, and would have been better), we were led with suitcase and luggage into the bar where people were eating and drinking and have to say that we felt uncomfortable (mainly because the younger male working behind the bar did not seem to like us for some reason, although the young lady who spoke English was more accommodating). Our first impression therefore was not good, and the reason why we did not use the ‘Sa Nansa’ on a regular basis throughout our weeks stay.
Eventually we were shown to reception, and met the Manager who acknowledged an e-mail I had previously sent, which impressed us. We were asked if the accommodation allocated to us was alright, and then the Manager offered to carry our case up the small metal spiral staircase to our apartment which was a nice gesture. Expecting a studio apartment, we were amazed to be provided with a 2 bedroom apartment with 2 bathrooms! In addition to this, the kitchen area had a full size oven and hobs, washing machine and full sized fridge freezer, kettle and toaster.
The dining area had a table to seat 6, TV/Radio and a settee (there are no English channels, so turn the TV onto radio and select channel 16; this channel provides a great mix of easy listening Spanish and English music with little or no talking in between). We were also amazed to have our own entrance to the beautiful pool, and a second entrance to the street and shops. The apartment was well supplied with cooking pots, pans, utensils and crockery. Having been used to mediocre accommodation in the past (we don’t like large complexes), our former disillusionment was immediately dispelled, and we were able to relax and enjoy our reluctantly given drinks from Sa Nansa on the balcony (we did return their glasses which was something they seemed to be worrying about).
In daylight, we found that the Ca’n Digus apartments probably had (in our opinion) one of the best locations in Fornells; it is situated on the sea front with access for swimming in the sea (swimming shoes recommended because of the rocks), and with lovely views. I cooked every night, and we enjoyed having a drink, and eating on our balcony. Entertainment was provided by the lovely 22 year old parrot, who constantly talked (he is multi-lingual!), whistled, barked or meowed – he also spoke like a young child! We spent hours trying to find out if it was the parrot talking or somebody else! Do not feel sorry for this parrot, people who own birds of the parrot family (as I do), will know that he is happiest in the vicinity of ‘his master’ (the Manager) during the summer months, and during the winter months he rejoins his friends in his large aviary at home.
Finding Fornells rather an upmarket resort for us (and the meal prices reflected this), we found the local Spar shop and bread/pastry/delicatessen/butchers type shops adequate for our evening meal and drinks requirements. There is also a shop behind Ca’n Digus that sells freshly cooked spit-roast chicken (delicious and open 10:00am till 4:00pm each day); there is also a pharmacy and Tabac shop nearby (if you smoke, both the resort and apartments have a relaxed attitude to smoking). Also, the bus stop is only a 5 minute walk away.
Because Ca’n Digus does not have a financial interest in the attached ‘Sa Nansa’ bar, this meant that (unusually), you can take your own drinks/food to the pool. There is no hassle, just pure relaxation (unless you don’t like the bird!); there are enough sun beds, and at this time of the year few people were using them. Another plus is that if you have a night flight back home, there is a very comfortably furnished communal area in reception where you can wait with very comfortable settees and chairs, dining tables and chairs, internet access, TV/radio and washroom facilities – excellent!
Cleanliness – well people have different expectations, but we found the apartment great. The towels were changed once during the week, and we did have a washing machine if we needed it, and all balconies had a substantial airer (I forgot to say, ours also had a barbecue facility!). The apartment also had a mop/bucket/brush if we needed it, and we took our own rubbish to the bins – home from home! Maybe we slept well because we were situated at the back of Ca’n Digus, and did not hear any bins being emptied during our stay.
My advice to the management would be: to ask the Sa Nansa staff to direct holiday makers straight to the comfortable reception area to wait, rather than having them wait in the bar/restaurant area. Also, I think there was a problem with the plumbing! I did not dare flush the toilet during the night due to the aftermath noise; however, I am sure they do know about that problem!
Would we go back to Ca’n Digus and recommend the apartments to our family and friends? Yes, definitely! Fornells might not have been the perfect resort for us, but our Ca’n Digus apartment definitely made up for that.

“Just as expected”

We chose to book Can Digus after reading reviews on Trip Advisor and weren't disappointed. It was great value for money and in a great location. We were aware of the bin men in the night so asked for a quiet room. We had one that had the bedroom in the back overlooking the pool and the balcony on the road/sea side. We did hear the bin wagon twice but it didn't disturb us too much. One thing that wasn't mentioned in the reviews was the darned parrot. The pool area was nicer than expected and very peaceful until the parrot that lives in the corner started up. He frequently whistles and calls for long periods which drove us crazy. Once afternoon I simply had to leave the pool or I would have been us for parrot-cide!! It really is a draw back and will stop us from going there again. The other points are that we had booked a one bedroom apartment and actually had a 2-bedroomed one. So plenty of room. The apartment was a little tired and while superficially clean had not been properly cleaned for some time. I was surprised at having a TV but all channels were Spanish but then it was quite nice to live without TV for a week. Have said a few negatives, it was very cheap so we were quite happy. Having the space was nice . The restaurant attached is definitely a good place to eat and one of the more reasonable in Fornells. We hired a car and drove around and we think we chose the right place to stay.

“Location, location, location”

Just returned from a week at these apartments. Very pleasantly surprised on our arrival, even having checked them out on the internet. Our apartment was on the ground floor with a patio opening directly out onto the pool area (which is very attractive). The pool itself is not very large but serves its purpose, and there are plenty of sun beds. The bedroom window opened onto the street (not busy) with a beautiful sea view. The apartment was large and spotlessly clean, if slightly dated, but everything was in good working order and we had all that we needed. The main selling point is the location - 1 minute from the centre of Fornells, but on a quiet road overlooking the sea. There is a bar/restaurant attached to the apartments which serves decent food at prices which are not as over-inflated as some in Fornells. It was busy most days and evenings, which was unusual as most other restaurants in the village were mostly deserted. The only negative - and it's not in their control - is that the community bins situated opposite the apartments are emptied every 2 or 3 days (by the local council?) and this is carried at 2am!
With inflation in Menorca and the bad Euro/£ exchange rate our everyday expenses (food, drink etc) worked out at 3 times what they cost 2 years ago. Expect to pay at least £30 for a beer, main course and coffee for 2 people.
