“Lovely, simple, peaceful and very adequate”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 September 2010

We originally booked through onthebeach, but to a different resort, Son Parc, but at the last minute we were changed to here for "operational reasons"

When we arrived our beating hearts were stilled.

Platges de Fornells as the resort is correctly know as is a very small resort with this and another hotel. The rest of the resort seems to be holiday homes and apartaments.

There are two supermarkets and two restaurants not in hotels.

The beach is about a 5-15 min walk depending on your pace, I'd suggest you use the 15 min version:)

The hotel/aparthotel is a complex of two storey apartments, with a patio on the lower and a balcony opn the upper, the rooms are clean and basically but adequately equipped and furnished.

The pool area is nice and simple and neat, the lifeguard when we were there, Diego is also the first aider and he's fabulous with kids and everybody really.

The restaurant and bar area is along one side of the pool, with both indoor and outdoor seating for eating.

The food is simple but decently cooked, and you can pretty much find something to keep you satisfied every night. We're a bunch of foodies, but we accepted that this wasn't a foodie hotel and once you accept that life is much simpler.

I would happily return here and so I think would my kids who loved the pool and the beach although a tad inconvenient over a boardwalk over the cliffs is level and flat for a long way out, so reassuring for parents and great for a splash, swim or a snorkel.

There's noweher to get money in the resort but for a 5 min, 1 Euro busride your in Fornells, which has two banks and numerous great fish eateries.

I may possibly be back

“Peaceful, family friendly, clean, good restaurants, nice pool. Excellent!!”

We went as a family of four with a 12 and 10 year old. We really loved our time here and would recommend it to others looking for a quiet family holiday looking for lazy days and simple nights.

The resort is very quiet. Maybe too quiet for some. No clubs or noisy bars. Suited us. Very few Brits which we thought was great! Mainly Spanish families. Everyone seemed to be really friendly and everyone says hello to everyone else.

The apartments are nice and quite spacious. Basic but exceptionally clean with maid service 3 times a week. Those looking to cook at home each night would find the kitchen too small and limited. Two ringed cooker and microwave. Fridge struggled to cop with the 35 degree heat.

Despite what they say on their website there is no A/C and no hair dryers in the apartments. The fan in the bedroom struggled to keep the room cool but did provide welcome respite at night. The kids really struggled too sleep in the lounge as it was so hot. There were no portable fans available.

The pool is great. Plenty of sun beds and very little music played around the complex. We felt the kids were safe with a life guard in attendance.

There are a few really good restaurants within a 5 minute walk. We ate at all of them and had great food and service each time. Food is not particularly cheap but you can get a 3 course meal for 14euro or a very good main meal from 7 euro. Wine and beer same price as UK. Es Cactus has amazing ice cream desserts which the kids loved as did we!

Most people we spoke to regretted half board at the hotel as the evening meal wasn't great. B&B would be a good option.

We would recommend getting the 5 minute bus journey to Fornells as the harbour is great to visit with loads of cafe's and places to eat. On Sat night there is a really fun street market which is worth visiting. The last bus back is at 21:30 but a taxi was only 8.3 euro for 4 people.

There are 2 local supermarkets. The one at the top of the hill is quite a bit cheaper than the one at the bottom of the hill - by as much as a 1/3rd.

The beach is not very good. Sand is not good. There is no shade but you can hire (only a few) beds or buy a parasol at the local supermarket. There are amazing beaches around Menorca and as such it's really worth hiring a car and making a few trips.

The staff are really friendly. We had a great time and loved every day.

“Lovely location, lack of amenities”

Hotel/apartments are in a beautiful location overlooking bay. Very small resort only 4 restaurants, 1 bar (which opens at 6), and 2 supermarkets. A couple of Kms from Fornells which is nearest large town, (lovely harbour town with plenty of ameniites). Cant fault hotel as room was in perfect spot and cleaned every other day. We were HB and food ok (more geared up for Spanish as they made up most of guests), but all was edible. No problen getting a sunbed any time we wanted one (great for august), and kids loved large pool. Great for quite week away but maybe to quiet for most. As seems the norm now all things quite expensive in Menorca (drinks etc), a lot more than prices where in Lanzarote in April. All in all a nice week away, and weather was beautful, which made up for extra hit on wallet.

“Do not stay here!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 July 2009

Yes it is a nice, quiet area, but the apartment I was given had several pieces of glass lying around which my toddler put into his mouth. Granted people drop glasses etc, but to find scattered pieces was just not acceptable, along with screws and other loose metals.
The heater during one night was obviously not turned on, but was sparking and smoking because water was coming from somewhere and corroded the plugs, I went to reception and had to demand someone have a look, who turned out to be a waiter, supposedly an electrician. He opened the plug which was rusted and smoking, he cut off the wires and said the engineer would return in the morning, and no one came.
I had to put the sofa bed around the faulty heater and the plugs were so old, they just dangle around in every room. It was just below acceptable and run down, not suitable for babies/ toddlers. Furthermore many toddlers were staying at this resort , surely they have to meet some kind of baby proofing standard.
I have travelled alot and the staff do not speak any English, luckily I do speak Spanish but, what if you do not? Surely a member of staff should be able to.
There was no life guard, the baby pool was never monitored and older children ran around and jumped in with no regard for babies, surely with a lifeguard this would be contained, furthermore at night people would swim in the large pool without a lifeguard again, no staff pay attention, there is a serious accident waiting to happen at this place.
Dirty and unsafe, shame as parts of the area are lovely, but the beach you have to climb horrific stairs, unsafe again in order to reach the nice sand. So you have to travel to reach a good beach.
Therefore stay in Son Parc, Cala and Porter or S'algar anywhere but this resort!

“Quiet, relaxing and expensive to eat”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 May 2009

We arrived at the Apartamentos TRH Tirant Playa, Playas de Fornells on 1st May 2009 at 9.30am. The receptionist told us that it was the first day of opening for the season and we were the first guests. In total 7 apartments were rented out that week and it was extremely quiet. The apartment itself is very spacious, clean and had fantastic views. We were in apartment 8 at the front end of the terrace. There is no hairdryer supplied in each room but there is one you can ask from reception – thank you Karen for the loan of yours! Don’t bother turning the television on, nothing in English and poor quality.

Being our first time going totally self catering we didn’t have the essentials so we went to one of the local supermarkets (Super Calafi) in Playa Fornells to get some supplies. Buying here is VERY EXPENSIVE. The most expensive loaf of bread we saw was €3.75, soap €1.65, small margarine €1.95, 40 Tetley tea bags €2.45, 1 apple was €1.45! The best thing to do is hire a car and get to around the island and find an Eroski (local supermarket).

There is nowhere to change money at Playas de Fornells, the closest is to walk into Fornells for a bank which is about a 45-50 minute walk. Or a hotel in Son Park changes money at reasonable rates.

The resort was very quiet being first day of the season and the bar in the complex didn’t really open. Just a short walk from the complex, about 300m walk, there is Bar Okapi which opens at 6pm and Happy Hour from 8-9 and also Restaurant Es Cactus which is open all day. We spent a lot of money/time in Bar Okapi and we can genuinely recommend going there. You will be greeted by Alberto (owner) and Rafael (cocktail man!), they are very welcoming/friendly and good fun. Bar Okapi serves bar snacks; homemade burgers, nachos, pizzas and other food. The cocktails are also very good! We had a meal at Restaurant Es Cactus which was nice and reasonable cost but the restaurant is rather bright but staff there are very helpful/friendly. There is also another bar tucked away which is run by Maria, sorry can’t remember the name but there is a photo of the view from there!

We had lunch in Fornells at El Pescador with the special price lunch menu of €9 and the food was reasonable but the drinks are not priced on the menu and we were charged €2.95 for half a larger which with several of those bumped the total cost up and it ended up being €35 for lunch for 2!

Would recommend hiring a car and also see La Mola.

Enjoy your stay!
