“Idiosyncatic but with a charm”

This was my second visit (first in 2003) and my husband's first visit. The resort has been refurbished and this helps to make it more attractive. More reception staff speak English than before (we always try and use our bad French anyway but it is kinder on guests for whom French is one language too far). However, it is still an experience like no other! We both took treatments and my husband regretted spending over 100 Euro more for his Zen treatment than my "Détente & Vitality" just to be emerged in a bath most of the time! I enjoyed the mineral dense pool but we both felt that the massages were nothing more than stroking with oils. We enjoyed the wraps but be careful of the cold wrap for the legs - it is vicious. The evening menu was lovely and the quality of the food / wine was excellent. Service was fast most nights but we found ourselves seated near to small crying children on two nights. That indeed is the issue for two people like us who are looking for a relaxing but serious spa experience. Children of whatever age are usually exuberant and vocal on holiday and why shouldn't they be. The contrast between the treatment areas where children are not allowed and the rest of the resort where they are free to enjoy themselves is too much of a shock and contrast. I enjoyed the stretching and abs classes although be prepared that it is likely to be conducted in French so will fast track your vocabulary on the body and exercise! Gym is adequate but, personally, I wonder why they do not use the external area when the weather is nice and place a couple of exercise cycles there. Accommodation for us was a hotel room but I understand that there are self-contained units. The rooms do have a free internet connection which we appreciated. Soap in bathroom seemed to be rationed, even after requesting some!

“Adequate”

We stayed here for one night on our way to Spain. Good sea views from the terrace and probably very well equipped as a spa, but for an overnight stay it's expensive. Dinner was not particularly exciting steak a bit tough though the rest was OK. Breakfast had a good selection of breads, meats, cheeses and some cereals. Room was of an adequate size, bathroom was dimly lit. All very 1980s really. Most people there seemed to be there for a spa weekend. 80% walking round in dressing gowns. Parking on site. Reception staff very good. Wifi no problem.

We did an RCI exchange and was concerned what we might get, as well as previous negative reviews. We had a wonderful experience and a beautiful room and view. We felt this treatment were also excellent. The resort is at the edge of town, about a 15 minute walk.

“Disappointment - ufnriendly and not by the sea”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 May 2007

Hello all - I am replying to these posts a bit late but hopefully what I say can be useful to others. I was extremely disappointed by this Thalacap resort - I felt a bit like I was being 'package holidayed,' that they charge a lot for what they offer and expect you to like it, like the hordes of others like it (or don't but just accept it).
The people at reception were unfriendly and unhelpful.
The hotel / resort is advertised as being on the sea (the photo showed a little beach in a cove, implying the hotel was there) but in fact it is nowhere near the shore, and in fact the sea is hardly accessible: the only way to actually get to the sea and swim was either to walk into the little town, or to cross a busy road, go through a private road, down a steep path and then you had a tiny little bit of beach.
Also, the hotel was noisy, the cleaners seemd to only be able to clean the rooms by scraping the beds across the floor early in the morning, consequently I was woken up early each morning, in the end i left and moved to a very friendly and less pretentious hotel next door.

“What a find”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 July 2006

A week in a thalassotherapy resort on my own what bliss but also some trepidation. I need not have worried everyone was fabulous. Changed my room as I did not have a sea view but after this no complaints apart from not liking the restaurant. I had booked in for HB as I was on my own. However I soon changed it to no food at all and there was no problem. The room itself was perfectly acceptable and kept beautifully clean.

The treatments were the best I have had and very different to the usual massages. The staff on the whole were extremely polite and helpful especially the reception staff.

Wish I had realised that it is essential to have a car for the week as when I wanted to hire one for a few days it was going to be outrageously expensive. Taxis are also expensive here about 10 Euros from the station which is roughly 2 km away from the hotel! Next time I would fly to Barcelona or Gerona or Perpignan and hire a car for the week. The walk into the town is down 128 steps which are very steep so it is fine to do it once or twice but twice a day is quite a lot! There are very good restaurants in the town.

All the guests were very friendly and I really did not feel as if I was on my own after a couple of days. The other thing which I found interesting was that there were so many repeat guests. By the way I do speak some french but am definitely not bi-lingual and there was quite a bit of English spoken as there were quite a few American guests.

Would I return - definitely
