“SHAMBOLIC”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 September 2009

I have never stayed in such a badly run hotel. We did not get breakfast when required, we were due to start work at 8.00am therefore a 7.00am breakfast did not seem an unreasonable request? They delivered the breakfast any time after 8.00am to our place of work around 7 miles away therefore cold. Packed lunch (included in the bill) the sandwich consisted of a piece of cheese nothing else it was a tad dry. The first night of our stay, I left my key at reception with a member of staff (I think) came back after 1 hour to find my key where I left it unattended. With this in mind the next night we went for a drink at the local bar I took my key, however on return we had been locked out they locked the door with no member of staff on duty, we banged the door, telephoned no reply. If there was a fire or an emergancy for a guest this does not bear thinking about.

“Idyllically placed for Scottish Highland outdoor pursuits (walking, cycling, fishing etc)”

Booked a week's holiday B&B for end of August. Great value for money at less than you'd pay for the standard "Travel - Lodge - Inn" and with a really good breakfast included. The Gordon Arms Hotel is located in the main square of Tomintoul - the highest village in Scotland located in The Glenlivet Crown Estate - ideal for exploring the Highlands. The hotel is quiet - even though the road running through the square was busy sometimes during the day. Staff were friendly, efficient, and could not have been more helpful. Our double room was clean and spacious and the bathroom was also large...very important for showering after days out walking / cycling - due to the weather some days, we became suitably "muddy" :-) John - the owner - is also an accomplished Chef and is rightly very proud of the results, using only fresh local ingredients - tomatoes, local fungi, fresh fish etc.. They have plans to continue with the decoration / refurbishment already in evidence. The log fire - yes, even in August - was kept fed all evening and Ringo the black Labrador pub was a welcome entertainment.

“Friendliest hotel ever!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 August 2009

We are hoping to move nearby and stayed here whilst we looked at houses. Lovely, lovely people. Good food, great prices, warm and welcoming surroundings. Amazing fire! Apparently the Richmond hotel is being done up - we didn't see inside it, but the Gordon hotel was lovely. If you want to be really picky then it's slightly dated - but with the welcome you'll receive and the "nae bother" response to any request, this is a great place to stay. Oh and ask to see Ringo - the black lab puppy who's just moved in!

“Great Hotel and break”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 June 2009

Very friendly and helpful staff. The owner even prepared fresh sea trout he had just caught so we could try it! Food was very good and seemed freshly prepared. Room was very clean and we had a good view over “The Square”. If you’re into whisky, make sure you try the local dram Tomintoul 10yr or 16yr… just great in front of the log fire in the bar - even accompanied with traditional live music one evening. We found it a good location for exploring the Cairngorms and would definitely go back. Kevin & Anni
