“a perfect hotel for a relaxing break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 May 2011

The hotel grounds and pool were fantastic but the rooms were basic and needed upgrading but were spotlessly clean. The staff were friendly, helpful and welcoming. During our stay our friend celebrated her birthday. The hotel offered to make her a cake and put flowers in her room, they also made her a card. This we felt was a lovely gesture and made her day special. The food was good quality and the menu catered for all tastes.

“Good service, friendly staff, but really dated...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2010

We got a very good deal and booked this hotel because we needed a place to stay near Palermo and Monreale. We did not really read any reviews or information about the hotel.
If you have a car, it has a good location, since you can easily reach Monreale (3km) and Palermo (8km). Don't be afraid of narrow roads and crazy drivers, though… It also has ample free parking spaces.
The hotel itself is huge - which is something I usually try to avoid – and it is really dated and would need a major rejuvenation. It seems to come straight from the 1980s. This applies to the whole hotel, the public areas as well as the rooms. There is also this intense odorizer smell in the hallways, which makes you wonder how everything would smell without perfume... You can see everywhere that everything has been used extensively in the last decades.
Nevertheless, all in all we enjoyed staying in the hotel. Staff was really nice, especially at the front desk. They had wireless internet, a pool, breakfast on a terrace, and as mentioned ample parking, and all this for a very competitive price.
The hotel is mostly geared to tour groups, which were probably promised "4 star hotels" on their tour - it is officially a four star hotel, but much cheaper (and shabbier) than a good three star hotel...
For individual travellers with cars, I recommend the hotel for 1-3 nights for exploring Monreale and Palermo. For longer stays, with the intention of spending lots of time in the hotel, you will probably be disappointed. And, by the way, breakfast (apart from the cappuccino) is quite poor, but that’s the norm in Sicily...

“Was a little sad to leave the hotel and staff, not knowing if I would ever return.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 October 2009

We loved this place! The staff was wonderful. In fact, I recently mailed photos that we took with them. We had a relaxing stay; took the bus to Monreale a few times; walked to a local restaurant; drove to Palermo; enjoyed the pool and terrace. Food was very good. It was always my dream to go where my Grandma was from and settle in close to the locals for several days. For us, the Genoardo was perfect! We were there for 5 nights, then took a trip to Messina. NOT a good idea. The hotel was a dump. We called Genoardo and went back for 3 more nights before heading to Rome for a week.

“Not as expected, but not bad either”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 July 2009

Stayed at the hotel for 5 nights. The hotel is not bad, but I wouldn’t rate it as a 4 star, give it 3 instead. Rooms are clean and spacious but not definitely at 4 star level. No shower, facilities look old, small TV, ugly green decoration, air conditioning doesn’t cool enough (being at top speed)… all this when they say we had “one of the best rooms”. No complaints about the bed or noises at the hotel. View from the balcony is certainly great (except for the biting mosquitoes) and the room is comfortable in general

Pool and public areas are beautiful but the hotel is mainly deserted, this is a place where you can see the main business is organizing parties and events. Probably they focus more in serving big tour groups. Breakfast was OK. Dinner is apparently served on an order base (dinner package with the room I guess) but we managed to be served the first night by speaking at reception and the cost is added to your final bill. Staff is not the most friendly people I’ve met but they’re not bad either.

The main issue is that you will definitely need a car to come from/to the hotel, of course, if you’re brave enough to drive among Sicilians and the very narrow roads. The location allowed us to explore all the east part of the island since we were looking for nice beaches (by the way feeling annoyed for not having a proper shower when coming back) and only having to drive the crazies roads of Palermo when going to Mondello or getting into the city for dinner. There are also nice tratorias and restaurants at Monreale (visit also the cathedral) but again you’ll need a car because seems difficult reach this by foot from the hotel

Like it’s been told, I would only recommend this hotel only if you get a good rate deal and if you have a car. Sicily is great and there are many places to visit but they’re distant from each other. We only managed to visit the west, 5 days is not enough. So is up to you if you decide not renting a car and stick to one place, join a tour that take you to every interesting place or dare to drive among Sicilians and the very narrow roads

“A Disappointing Stay - Such a shame that the service/facilities do not match the setting.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 June 2009

We stayed here for three nights following our wedding in Palermo. Reading the reviews on trip advisor and other sites and looking at the hotel website we had high hopes for a few romantic days relaxing by the pool after the wedding. We advised the hotel that we would need to check in late after our wedding reception and we were able to check in with no problems despite arriving after 12am. The room was a bit disappointing as considering it was rated four star, the bathroom fittings were old with no shower, only a mixer tap over the bath and no shower curtain. Not quite what we had hoped for our wedding night.

The biggest disappointment came in the morning as we explored the hotel to find out that the pool was closed for renovations and apart from a coach tour we appeared to be the only guests. The grounds were lovely, but there was not even any service to get a drink in the grounds during the day. The cafe/ice cream area was closed up as if in the middle of winter. The bar inside only opened for drinks in the evening (I assume to cater for the return of the coach party) and the restaurant was situated in a charmless and brightly lit conference room with buffet tables (again serving the coach party). Unfortunately, not a setting for a romantic dinner for two.
There was a menu for a la carte, but no staff in the restaurant. Needless to say we did not spend much time in the hotel and ate out both nights. As it is dangerous to walk on the country roads at night the alternatives are very limited on foot.

We were not offered the free hotel shuttle to Palermo and were sold bus tickets when we asked how to get there, despite the minibus sitting outside the whole time. We also found ourselves stranded in Monreale one evening when the bus stopped earlier than timetabled. There were no taxis at the stand in Monreale so we called the hotel to ask them to call us a taxi. Twice the receptionist hung up on us as she could not understand enough English in order to speak to us. Luckily a local Gelateria was able to call a taxi for us and we got back safely, no thanks to the hotel. When we got back there was another member of staff on duty who could speak English so why the receptionist did not ask him to assist we do not know. Definitely not four star service.

It is such a shame that the management decided not to complete the renovations to the pool in the winter and did not feel it worth opening the facilities due to the low number of guests. From our perspective we would rather that the hotel had told us it was closed rather than staying in a place that was semi-functioning for the few precious days of our honeymoon.

I would only recommend booking this hotel if you can find a very cheap deal, and do not want to spend a lot of time in the hotel during your stay as it will be a lottery whether anything is open.
