We returned last weekend from our second visit to the Sol Cayo Guillermo, and once again have to say this was the perfect place if you are looking for relaxation in a beautiful setting.
We arrived around 15 minutes before the buffet closed, and the front desk immediately put our wristbands on and sent us off to eat so we would not miss dinner, and handled the details of the check-in afterwards. Very much appreciated. But this is just indicative of the staff here. Once again they were friendly, helpful, accommodating…we cannot say enough about them. Special thanks to Dilmis (hope your hand is ok) and Marilyn in the buffet, Anita, Hector and Elizabeth at the main bar, and Nelson everywhere.
Our room was great, kept very clean, everything functioning, and we loved the beach and pool just as much as last year.
Just a few notes of changes and some things that have been being discussed on the forum:
Seaweed – This is being collected by hand, but we found they did a really great job of it. It took a bit longer some mornings after extremely windy nights washed up more than usual, but we never found it to be an obstacle to enjoying the beach.
The safe – yes we had to pay 14 cuc for the use of the safe for the week. I know for some this is an issue but in any Sol/Melia and other chains I stayed in the DR, the safe was always an extra charge so I was surprised last year when we did not have to pay.
General maintenance – We noticed that the handrails and ladders in the pool have all been replaced and our much sturdier. There was all kinds of painting going on everywhere, and improvements had been made to the washrooms near the bar.
Services – New this year for an extra charge, that seemed really reasonable to us, you can have your fridge stocked with various combinations of beer/pop/liquor, and even arrange for coffee making in your room.
Food -Can’t comment on the a la cartes, once again we ate at the main buffet and beach bar/restaurant. Never went hungry, enjoyed the made to order pasta, fish, and especially the French toast in the morning. The BBQ has been moved into a more visible location outside the beach restaurant/bar (last year we did not find it hidden away until the end of our stay), and there is a donut hut by the pool. The sandwich counter is now located behind the main bar.
Kite Surfers – There were a number of kite surfers, especially on the windier days, but they did not interfere with us. They mainly stayed to the less populated area of the beach away from the resort, or out deeper into the water.
We did not do any excursions this year as our main goal was just downtime and these are mostly full day affairs. This is not the place to go if you want to be close to attractions.
To summarize, another great stay, cannot wait to go back again.
Room Tip: We have stayed in the 100 and 200 sections, a little further away from the lobb, but quiet at night.
