Yes indeed, Kemarg from Nottingham has just about nailed it on a couple of points about this place.
BIGGEST plus bar none - just a 5 minute walk (if that..) to the main sandy beach where 8 Euros a day for a pair of sun-loungers including brolly & table isn't excessive, as I think we paid 5 or 6 Euros in Kos back in 2003 - 8 years ago. If the days are hot in Pefkos, as they were throughout the first week of October, the sea is warm and clear. Just the job.
Some other reviewers remarked as to how idyllic and quiet staying at the Amphitriti was in the evenings, but we didn't find this to be the case at all. We stayed out elsewhere every evening till late as the atmosphere at the hotel's own pool bar was dominated nightly by random loud & tacky 'muzak' until around midnight or longer, a couple of times when there was barely anybody in there, we noticed. Not what we were after, really, and we couldn't escape the noise even in our room with the balcony doors closed (our room was at the side, not even overlooking the pool area) so no chance of a relaxing pre- or post-dinner drink on the balcony. Might not have been so bad if it had actually been some Greek-style music for a bit of local flavour, but no such luck unfortunately. All-night Rod Stewart, anyone?
I think the staff should be a bit more perceptive as to when to whack up the volume depending on the situation in the bar, and not just always have it on full blast regardless. The hotel's own nightly din combined with the regular cacophony coming from the awful-sounding Matina complex some distance away meant that you end up in an unavoidable booming, noisy crossfire.
One tip for the hotel please: the room safes are a good and basic necessity, but it would be far better if they were (a) considerably cheaper, as 25 Euros is clearly unjustified and a blatant rip-off for the sake of peace of mind...and (b) of the push-button keycode type, rather than having to use an actual key. This could easily get lost on your daily holiday travels, or fall into the wrong hands.
Pefkos itself isn't too bad at this late-season time of year, although the chavvy-theme in some of the bars can be apparent, especially on the night that we witnessed bar after bar showing X-Factor on the outdoor TV screens. With people actually watching it - yuck!! Some holiday night out!
Main bar/lunch/sea-view recommendation - the Lee Beach cafe-bar. Relaxed, spacious, breezy (literally..!) and friendly with nice food, quick service and spot-on ambient music. The main man there is well into the Rolling Stones, so if you wear a t-shirt with 'em on it, he might regale you with tales of his lightning Rock n' Roll trip to Athens and back to see them, as he did us.
Would consider Pefkos again if choosing a future Rhodes holiday, but only 'might' consider the Amphitriti again. Nothing basically wrong with it, just a case of 'could do better' with regard to the nightly bar noise (would want a diifferent room to the one we were in, that's for sure...) the minor room-safe issue, and the slightly repetitive and uninspiring B&B breakfast choice every day.
As for places to eat - we read lots of good reviews of Dama Dama so went there on our first night - waited for a table as it was so popular, and then were rather disappointed at the prices and portion sizes. Friendly to the point of fawning but definitely overrated and overpriced compared with others. At the other end of the scale was Zorba's - much nicer atmosphere, okay food and fab value at under 8 Euros for 3 courses - the price of a starter at Dama Dama!! And a free glass of local brandy to finish off!
