“Amphitri Treat”

We stayed at the Amphi last July 2011 and thought it was a fabulous place the family owned and run hotel is quiet and the family are very friendly and will help with anything you ask of them, even to running us up the top of the road to catch our coach, they also pick you up from the taxi rank on arrival. The food on the premises was great and good value for money, I really don't understand some peoples reviews did they stay in a different place to me 'MMMM' or some people just very up their own backsides and think they are too good for this, if that the case don't go on a package holiday. Amphi you are the best, and lovely family !!!!!!

“Amphi-ok, though not a treat-i”

Yes indeed, Kemarg from Nottingham has just about nailed it on a couple of points about this place.

BIGGEST plus bar none - just a 5 minute walk (if that..) to the main sandy beach where 8 Euros a day for a pair of sun-loungers including brolly & table isn't excessive, as I think we paid 5 or 6 Euros in Kos back in 2003 - 8 years ago. If the days are hot in Pefkos, as they were throughout the first week of October, the sea is warm and clear. Just the job.

Some other reviewers remarked as to how idyllic and quiet staying at the Amphitriti was in the evenings, but we didn't find this to be the case at all. We stayed out elsewhere every evening till late as the atmosphere at the hotel's own pool bar was dominated nightly by random loud & tacky 'muzak' until around midnight or longer, a couple of times when there was barely anybody in there, we noticed. Not what we were after, really, and we couldn't escape the noise even in our room with the balcony doors closed (our room was at the side, not even overlooking the pool area) so no chance of a relaxing pre- or post-dinner drink on the balcony. Might not have been so bad if it had actually been some Greek-style music for a bit of local flavour, but no such luck unfortunately. All-night Rod Stewart, anyone?

I think the staff should be a bit more perceptive as to when to whack up the volume depending on the situation in the bar, and not just always have it on full blast regardless. The hotel's own nightly din combined with the regular cacophony coming from the awful-sounding Matina complex some distance away meant that you end up in an unavoidable booming, noisy crossfire.

One tip for the hotel please: the room safes are a good and basic necessity, but it would be far better if they were (a) considerably cheaper, as 25 Euros is clearly unjustified and a blatant rip-off for the sake of peace of mind...and (b) of the push-button keycode type, rather than having to use an actual key. This could easily get lost on your daily holiday travels, or fall into the wrong hands.

Pefkos itself isn't too bad at this late-season time of year, although the chavvy-theme in some of the bars can be apparent, especially on the night that we witnessed bar after bar showing X-Factor on the outdoor TV screens. With people actually watching it - yuck!! Some holiday night out!

Main bar/lunch/sea-view recommendation - the Lee Beach cafe-bar. Relaxed, spacious, breezy (literally..!) and friendly with nice food, quick service and spot-on ambient music. The main man there is well into the Rolling Stones, so if you wear a t-shirt with 'em on it, he might regale you with tales of his lightning Rock n' Roll trip to Athens and back to see them, as he did us.

Would consider Pefkos again if choosing a future Rhodes holiday, but only 'might' consider the Amphitriti again. Nothing basically wrong with it, just a case of 'could do better' with regard to the nightly bar noise (would want a diifferent room to the one we were in, that's for sure...) the minor room-safe issue, and the slightly repetitive and uninspiring B&B breakfast choice every day.

As for places to eat - we read lots of good reviews of Dama Dama so went there on our first night - waited for a table as it was so popular, and then were rather disappointed at the prices and portion sizes. Friendly to the point of fawning but definitely overrated and overpriced compared with others. At the other end of the scale was Zorba's - much nicer atmosphere, okay food and fab value at under 8 Euros for 3 courses - the price of a starter at Dama Dama!! And a free glass of local brandy to finish off!

“Nice but not great”

Our experience (as a couple in our late 40's, staying at the end August 2011) started with arriving in the early hours of the morning to find that we had a courtyard studio room with no view or privacy - stayed in there the first night but had to nip back to reception to get the aircon remote because the room was like an oven. Next morning we asked to move and Mary obliged by moving us just round the corner so that we had a small ground floor balcony to ourselves. Watch out for the charges: aircon @ €9 per day was a bit steep, room safe €25 (incl refundable €10 key deposit) and €25 if you want to keep your room beyond 1200hrs (to 1800hrs) on the last day. Room was very clean and tidy and although we had an ant problem in the bathroom, it was swiftly dealt with. The kitchenette facilities are very basic but did the job for the odd evening we ate in. Booked a diving trip through Amy, our Thomas Cook rep, all very efficient. Pool clean, good size, pool bar and service excellent - particularly the breakfast buffet which, at €5 was pretty good value. Pefkos is not a place to go if you want to go walking - there is no coastal path and the real estate is all fenced off so you cant get to the shoreline. We did mange to walk up to the high ground to the N of the town but that was it. The main strip in Pefkos itself is a bit 'chav' and sky sport dominated but, found several very nice places to wine and dine. The Enigma downstairs bar was very good, but found the restaurant upstairs was a bit over rated (and overpriced). George's restaurant was excellent - just pick a table away from the road - best food we had and very reasonably priced. Found that the main beach was very narrow and too cramped for our liking, sun loungers at €4 each for the day - forget it! Instead we found a lovely little cove round the corner off the beaten track with excellent swimming and snorkeling. As some others have said, we would stay here again, but only if we could be sure to get a good room - avoid the courtyard! All in all, found Greece to be very expensive, and costs as much (if not more) to eat out there than it would in UK!

Room Tip: Avoid the courtyard if you want to sit outside your room.

Just got back from one week at Amphitriti [sept 29] Everything is very clean and spacious with plenty of storage space. Had room 215 above reception with a long balcony Hotel is ideal to reach well stocked Maria's supermarket Not far to walk to Plakia beach which has a purpose built catering caravan [Kantina] The water here is warm and clear , easy to get in and out The selfcatering apartment had fridge, kettle, toaster A very nice hotel all round

Room Tip: room215 large balcony

“Excellent but?”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 October 2011

Hotel is situated far enough away from the noise of the main street and very near to two beaches (3 mins). Hotel cleanliness excellent, staff friendly. Rooms excellent but if you get one overlooking the pool you can get noise from the hotel bar untill early hours of the morning. Pool excellent with ample beds, umbrellas. Bar price inline with most bars in the resort. If you go for B&B the breakfast is a bit mundane but for what you paid it is OK. My only complaint is the cost of the air conditioning, 9 Euros per day! ( I understand that this is common throughout Greece)There is a very high proportion of customers who return year after year which is a good recommendation. If I wanted to back to this resort I would definitely consider this hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the pool are not desirable. They get full sun all day and can get noisy at night...
