“Outstanding”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 October 2011

Firstly can I pre empty this review with a few wee facts, 1. I have traveled the world and stayed in some of the finest hotels, usually hidden gems and boutique hotels, 2. I work in the industry of hotels and hospitality in Scotland.
Please ignore the review below which I believe to be false. This is one of the finest hotels I have ever stayed in. We arrived in late Sept for a short break and were instantly made to feel very welcome and asked to treat the hotel like it was our home from home. The owners Elea and Xavier (I hope this is the correct spelling) were two of the most lovely people you could ever meet and nothing was a problem. They recommended restaurants for us to visit, which were high in the mountains and away from tourists and even provided plug adaptors and an iphone charger as I forgot to bring mine.
The hotel itself is very stylish and beautifully decorated. The terrace outside is perfect to chill out and soak up some sun and the pool perfect to cool down in, and our room was perfect, clean stylish comfortable and the bed was very good for a good nights sleep. The housekeeper was lovely and every day changed towels, and bath robes and bedding, the attention to detail was superb. In the mornings, there was fresh fruit and bread on offer all locally sourced and the nicest Manchego cheese and ham I have tasted.
Altea is a beautiful town, about 25 mins from Benidorm, but poles apart. Lovely wee cobbled streets, great restaurants and tavernas, a chilled out vibe throughout. Its a perfect base to explore the mountains.
On our final night the owners gave us a cooking demo and Xavier made one of the most amazing seafood Paellas I have tasted, he went to the local market beforehand to buy squid, tuna and large prawns. This was all washed down with some lovely local wine, Serena stock some great wines..
All in all 5 stars and we would definitely recommend this to fellow travellers.

“Poor service, dirty bed, poor breakfast and cheap swimming pool”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2011

All is in the title. We stayed 16 nights in august. It's true that it didn't exist very good hotel in this area but it's not the reason to make so many cheap services especially when you pay 150-210 per night!!! More 10 for the parking. It's true that you are not well receptioned in this hotel and nobody shows you the facilities of the hotel/rooms. There's not a good service, the breakfast was poor and every day the same, there' s no pastries as you can see in the pictures' website for example. The "home" bread is not good too.The bed was dirty with some spots and the cushions were full of yellow transpiration's signs inside. Don't think about swimming in the swimming pool, it's so little and nobody swim inside, quasi half of the basin is deeper than 30 centimeters! Any way nobody spend time around it even that the 2 deck chairs are uncomfortable. However it's true that this hotel is very calm and well situated. Rooms are even when pleasant when it's not dirty. That's why we stayed and we succeed to relax. Restaurant seems to be good, it looks like it's better to have diner there than to stay in the hotel. So be carefull, an hotel like that may not be more than 100/120 euros in high season. For 150-210 per night we can't say that we can recommand the hotel, more the opposite.

“Beautiful boutique hotel in an authentic Spanish town”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 July 2011

We stayed in this beautiful old Spanish part in this beautiful boutique hotel on the hill of the old town of Altea. Elia and Xabier, the owners and all the staff always on hand to help out and make it feel like home. To the architectural fundies out there this is just up your street if you are into detail and design and small modern accommodation. Loved the vibe. We stayed in the balcony room number 10 which had an incredible view of the old village below and the sparkling sea ahead. When I return to this area I will definitely book here again. We loved it and being people who love healthy food, the breakfasts were just what we wanted. Thanks Elia! hope to be back.

Room Tip: If its in your budget book the balcony rooms they are worth it!

“The birds soaring above”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 June 2011

Altea is a charming, romantic, and beautiful town. This hotel is the same. We stayed four nights and enjoyed every minute. The breakfast was wonderful, they make their own fresh bread. Lunch and dinner even better. Fried watermelon with duck was our favorite. From our balcony, room number 8, we could see all of the coastline. Early in the morning I would sit out there and watch the hundreds if not thousands of birds soaring above the town. While all of the streets were quiet, the birds and the wind off the soft water was almost like being in another world. I loved it. We enjoyed the pool and got a good dose of sun, walked throughout the town, learned how to make paella with the owner, and enjoyed the Turkish bath in the basement of the hotel. The best part is the location. Take a tram from Alicante and get off one stop past the Altea stop, walk a few short blocks and you are at the hotel. Then, put on a white flowing dress and walk out into the sun and sit by the pool. At night, just go right up the hill and explore all the artisan shops and restaurants. I also enjoyed walking down to the beach in the early mornings and having a coffee looking out toward Calpe. Fantastic get away. Not many Americans choose to go this far into to the Costa Blanca, it's worth it and stay at this lovely hotel!

Room Tip: Number 8!

“very disappointing”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 April 2011

We stayed for one night - very poor welcome - given the room key - no attempt to show us round the facilities of the hotel or our room. The paintwork in the toilet and the shower was in poor condition - handprints on the wall of the toilet & faded paint in the shower.
Breakfast was mediocre with limited selection of food - the tea was cold and we had to ask for some juice with our meal.
When we were checking out the girl on reception could not operate the printer to produce a copy of our bill nor could she operate the card machine.
I suggested that she telephone the owner for assistance. She spoke with this person and then passed the phone to me. I suggested that the payment could be taken from my card as it was the same card as used for paying deposit. I requested that a receipt for this balance be sent by e-mail to our next place of stay we would be for 6 days - another hotel in the area. This was not forthcoming. On returning home to UK, we discovered that Hotel La Serena had taken the balance amount TWICE from my card. This matter is now being investigated
