“Needs TLC”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 September 2011

This hotel has many good points and some bad ones depending on your needs .The hotel does cater for a mainly Spanish older clientele and at the weekends for spanish families ,there are some international clients, probably less than 10% and many transient clients spending only a night or two. English is not widely spoken and apart from legal signage in the rooms all other notices - menu`s etc,are in Spanish so a basic knowledge of Spanish would be helpful if staying at this hotel.
The bedroom area of the hotel seems to be recently refreshed and has plenty of storage room, good air conditioning and small fridge (this should now be a must in all hotels ).There is also a good size balcony. Soundproofing is non-existent as we were able to hear our neighbours regular nightly telephone converation quite clearly.Unfortunately for us we only got sun for a few hours in the morning as our room faced inward across from other rooms. If you can get a room facing the town not only will it feel more private but you will get sun afternoon and evening .
The bathroom however was a disaster area not only was it badly maintained but was not clean , the toilet and cistern moved when your sat on it, the radiator was yellow with age and thick with dirt; the grout on the the tiles around the shower was black ,there was a hole in the bath that someone had attempted to fix with filler, the door and the door frame had peeling paint and was grey with dirt and greasy finger marks. The floor and tiles were stained and dirty. When are hoteliers going to learn how important a well maintained clean bathroom is, by the way this was room 325. Perhaps because this hotel is very busy with a regular faithful clientele the management here seem to be willing to rest on thier laurels.
We were on a half board basis and the restaurant was well set up with plenty of room and good air conditioning. The breakfast buffet was good with limited choice but there was something for everyone. The only thing I missed was proper fresh croissants and scrambled eggs. This is a Spainish hotel in a Spanish resort, dont expect to get a full English .For dinner the buffet offering consisted of one meat dish one fish dish one potato choice, lots and lots of salad choices and some basic desserts. The scramble for dinner was somewat like a school canteen but the food, although mundane was edible and helped by the inclusion of red or white wine available in large water coolers, (very popular!) Staff in both the restaurant and at reception, while being quite efficient were definitely lacking in charm.
There is a large pool area and a nice garden. There are plenty of beds available but for some reason no umbrellas. Surely a must in a strong sunny climate? The pool leads directly onto a pebble beach for those who don’t like the pool, but you will need to make sure you have something comfortable to lie on.
The hotel is about a 15 minute walk along a busy road with no footpath to Altea itself. This is a little gem of a place and has lots of very good inexpensive restaurants and a lovely old town which is a must see as is the old Baroque church on the top of the town.
Altea is definitely worth a visit and I will return but probably stay in the town itself I would not return to the Cap Negret until something is done with the appalling bathrooms and would not go half board here as the restaurants along Altea ‘s promenade have so much choice and very reasonable prices.

Room Tip: Ask for room facing the town for more privacy and more sun

“Loved it, well worth a visit”

We had a 3 day 2 night break and were pleasantly suprised, rooms clean and roomy, balcony overlooking the pool and the sea, food great, staff great, only complaint was the price of drinks at the bar, however if you like red wine there are water butts full of red wine Free at lunch and evenings meals. I have recommended it to friends and several are going to try it. Outstanding value for the money we paid. I will go back.

“Good value three star hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2010

For most our two week stay, we were the only British tourists there. The hotel is Spanish, so don't expect too much English food, English entertainment or English speaking staff. Having said that, the reception staff spoke English and all were pleasant and helpful. The evening buffet had just about enough familiar looking items to avoid starvation. The English breakfast was a choice of bacon and eggs or eggs and bacon (if you can call it bacon), but there was plenty of fresh and dried fruits, yoghurts, cakes etc., so again, no need to starve.

The hotel is right on the beach and the rooms are spacious with sea views. Ask for a west facing room, if you want to sit on the balcony and soak up the sun. The beach is quite stoney and not ideal for children to play on. We came out of season and there were no children, but I'm not sure how they would be entertained in the holidays. With no inside pool, a bland outside pool and a difficult beach, it may not be a kid's paradise.

The prom at Altea is very pleasant, with the usual array of bars and cafes, but it is a half mile walk from the hotel along a busy main road. Or there is a longer, more picturesque route that takes you out into the country and back along the river. Alternatively, a bus stops outside the hotel and takes you in. The town itself isn't very exciting, but the old town on top of the hill is well worth a visit. As too is the Tuesday market, but it is not on the seafront as some websites suggest. It has been relocated near the river and is an easy walk from the hotel.

Taking everything into consideration, the hotel, its facilities, location and value for money, it is probably well worth its three star rating. I would give it 7 out of 10, probably a bit more if I was Spanish - a bit less if i were a child.

“Great location - lively resort hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 September 2009

Had stayed in Altea previously and wanted to return for a long weekend. Booked hotel directly by telephone and with ease. I had previously seen the hotel and knew it was within easy walking distance of the promenade and old church of Altea. I requested a seaview and was told all apartments overlook the sea at some point which is true. Stayed at end of August in high season. The hotel was buzzing and filled to capacity with mainly spanish families. There was a very vocal animation team for the children but also quiet areas to sunbathe. The hotel was directly opening onto the shingle beach with a large outdoor pool close by in the Hotels grounds.

Yes the hotel was noisy with entertainment going on for the children and families throughout the day and night. But to be fair you were only 10 minute stroll from Altea promenade or the old part at the top of the hill which was part of our entertainment to go out and find somewhere to eat on an evening. The Hotel provided me and my husband with a good base , comfortable and clean bedrooms and a really varied buffet breakfast in the morning. We stayed 3 nights and would not hesitate to return. At 12 midnight all entertainment stopped - maybe bye laws in place? restriction of noise? but it was possible to sit on the balcony and savour the view.

Without exception all staff were polite, courteous with many speaking english, as we are english this was a bonus.

Staying in Altea is not the easiest of places to find accommodation and for location alone with a beautiful beach to walk onto I would recommend this hotel. We enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to stay again.
