“nice refurbished hotel, avoid the restaurant”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 August 2007

Just back from 10 days in this hotel on a all inclusive basis. Hotel rooms was just renovated, clean and with air conditioning.
As long as I have to say that the hotel was nice, I think that the restaurant and bar were poor including food and staff.

For the first time in my life I found an hotel serving breakfast only until 09.30, very limited especially if you are on holiday.

On three occasions I arrived at the restaurant around 09, coffee was finished, no tables available and no bread. Selection on breakfast items quality and choice really poor.
On two of the three occasions I decided not to have breakfast and went to the swimming pool, thinking that there would be an alternative on the snack menus (as I was all in). Alternative appeared to be a frozen pizza or a ham sandwich in old dry bread I wouldn't give to my dog.

Further I had to leave the hotel on several days as there was no sit at the swimming pool...

Dinner was basic with sometimes nice food, but most of the times the food was far below the level of an average school canteen. The starter were always the sames (5 items) for the entire period of my stay. Not to talk about the french fries waiting in the warm buffet for at least an hour.

I am really not difficult for food but a few dishes were not eatable and tasteless, this must have been as well due to some of the kitchen staff spending 3-4 hours in between shift drinking alchool at the swimming pool.

When i first had contact with the bar staff I had a bad impression of the greeks, who appear to be at the end really nice and friendly people when going out for dinner (despite I had all inclusive | went out several times for dinner due to the poor food level), but unfortunately in the hotel (except at the reception where they were really nice), staff wouldn't even greet customers and seem to be pissed off during the all shift (especially at the bar).

Oh yes...I was forgetting...if you try to order a drink at the bar don't ask twice what is included: they don't have a clear card saying what is included and what not and they would tell you " I just told you!" if you ask the second time. Don't disturb them while they are talking to a colleague having a break and a drink at the swimming pool, colleagues would always go first and guests last. (unless you are a woman then you get all attention from the waiters).

Long story short, nice rooms but the nice hotel doesn't go together with the food or the staff. It is fine to go on BB basis if breakfast would be upgraded.

  • Liked — Clean rooms and swimming pool
  • Disliked — Food level and variety in restaurant, service at the bar and restaurant

“Better than expected - from Pauline in Cheam”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2006

Having read some of the reviews about this hotel on this web-site, we expected the worst. However we were pleasantly surprised, and really enjoyed our stay in this hotel. We stayed here in September 2006.
It was clean, and bedding and towels changed regularly.
Our arrival night was a bit noisy due to people wheeling their cases along the corridor outside our room, but all the other nights were quiet.
Staff were all very friendly and helpful.
The pool area was lovely.
Food in general was good, but we would have preferred more greek food, so would book B&B if we stayed here again, which is not out of the question.
Access to Kos town was easy, and beaches accessible.
Air-conditioning was free and efficient.
I think some people moan unnecessarily about their holidays, and in reality live on junk food at home, so do not appreciate something different - neither do they live in palaces in the UK!

“Average hotel, lovely setting”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 September 2006

We booked this hotel via teletext holidays and it was rated as a 3*.

We found the breakfasts to be great, with a wide variety of food available. Diner was not so good, the food was edible but average and we found the set menu quite old-fashioned. This hotel is used extensively by German and Dutch tourists and the menus reflected this. It would have been nice to see more Greek dishes on the menu.

The room had air conditioning, for which their was no extra charge and it was clean. The room was quite noisy as a result of noise from the corridor.

The gardens and the pool were lovely, with plenty of sun loungers available. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

I would return to this hotel, but only on a B & B basis. The resort was nice with good access to Kos town. The street outside the hotel is lined with lots of family friendly restaurants.

  • Liked — Gardens and the pool
  • Disliked — The noise in the room (but we like the quite life!)

“Eat out and get a room near the pool”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 August 2006

I booked this holiday over the Internet through Teletext holidays. It was advertised as a 4* hotel and we had paid to have Half Board. When we arrived at the resort we were told we were with "Med Hotels" group.

Upon arrival at the hotel we were quite pleased. The outside was nicely decorated and clean. The reception was the same.

However, our opinion changed when we were taken the short walk to our room. It was pitch black (4am) and we were told the lights were turned off at night to stop people from using the pool at night(!) To those unfamiliar or unescorted the walk would have been quite dodgy as the ground was uneven.

Once we arrived in our room my heart sank. I have had many holidays to Greece and Kos before but this was the most basic of rooms I'd seen. The furniture was very old and basic. There was inadequate storage or hanging space. The wardrobe absolutely stank of pesticide (thankfully no sign of the pests though). We had a door out onto a "terrace". No curtain as such. No air conditioning (normal for a 4* hotel). Radio didn't work. Lights over the bed didn't work. Bathroom fittings were rusty and floor was dirty. Only saving grace was the sheets and towels were clean!

We had talked to some other English people staying at the hotel. They kindly showed us their room. It was much better. Recently re-furbished and clean with air-conditioning etc.

After much persuading and pleading (and waiting) we got our room changed. The hotel reception staff were not very helpful and quite stubborn but we persisted. If you go to this hotel make sure you get a room numbered in the 400s as it will be in the new block. If you get room 247 or something - good luck! That's the old block.

Get a safe at the hotel for 14Euro a week and buy the air-conditioning if going in peak season. Get a mosquito machine from the supermarket over the road. It's only 2.5 Euro and well worth the money. Hiring a fridge is also possible for about 2 Euro a day. This is worth it to keep drinks cool, freeze bottles of water etc.

Food at the hotel was bad. Just about edible only on a few days. Service in the restaurant was also bad. Eggs were served at breakfast only once a week! Fruit juice and coffee frequently ran out and was not quickly replaced. Food was left out uncovered etc. If this had been my first holiday to Kos I would probably not have wanted to go back!

Thankfully it wasn't my first holiday and we spent a lot of time out of the hotel so we had a good time.

A little tip to get to the beach - go through the Atlantis Hotel on the opposite side of the road to Apollon. Pay 1.50 Euro each to use their sunbeds by the pool or beach. The beach there is very nice and it's cheaper than up the road nearer Kos Town.

For things to do in Kos Town you really must do a boat trip. We went out for 3 days on the APHRODITE or the ARGO. We made great friends with the two captains Alex and Michael. Very friendly people and what a great day. Sailing round the smaller islands near to Kos... Pserimos is particularly beautiful. Kalymnos famous for the sponges and shells. Lunch is provided. If you go on a picnic day you will be treated to freshly cooked, on the barbeque, Souvlaki and salad. Yummy! An excellent day out for only 25Euros each (Adults).

Tingaki is good for the beach and worth the 10Euro taxi fare for a day out.

Trips to Turkey are frequent from the harbour. Don't go with your holiday company rep they charge far too much. Go along the port at night and barter with the many boats going over. Kalymnos Express is a good one as is Dionnyssos. I have used both. They are cheap and slower than the hydrofoil but it's a good day out. Turkey is very different from Kos but an experience not to be missed if you have the time.

Weather was fantastic when we were there. In the mid 30's every day. After being out on the boats so much we had lovely tans!

Summing up - Hotel not good - Holiday in general very good. Would I go back? Yes, definitely to Kos but no - not to the Apollon.

Not avery good choice! The food was not good at all. No buffet very bland and limited choice and small portions. No air con in the reataurant very unpleasant. The rooms had no TV, Air con not working properly, very basic. No regular towel changes. No entertainmet. The zoo area made it quite smelly.
The pool area was very nice.
