Me and my boyfriend just returned from Italy, where (among other places) we stayed at the Hotel della Fortezza and what a wonderful experience!! We were greeted by the owner who was the perfect host, and before offering us a glass of wine or beer he showed us our room which had been newly renovated. It turned out to be the room in the tower!! Very rustique, very medieval and extremely beautifull!! The room consisted of two floors - 1st floor with the entrance and the shower and 2nd floor, the bedroom, which was a circular room with a big fireplace, terracotta tiles in the ceiling and just the right feel. The hotel, or fortress, itself is beautifully restored with a respect for the history of the place - it's wonderful to sit in the courtyard before going to dinner having an aperitivo, enjoying the sorroundings.
The breakfast is typically italian, meaning it primarily consists of sweet cakes, but since you have to climb many stairs in Sorano (it is placed on a hillside) I'm pretty sure you'll loose the calories again;-).
Sorano itself is a scenic little village, with a surprisingly good standard of restaurants. I recommend, in particular, the "Hostaria Terazza Aldobrandeschi" who offers delicious organic food with the best view!! Othervise " La Locanda Dell'Arco" is worth a visit and extremely reasonable prices.
A must when being in the area is to visit Pitigliano, a nearby medieval town - driving in from the west you'll have the best view.
Enjoy :-)
