We stayed 1 night as part of a package tour booked via Goway.com called Hong Kong plus Exotic Macau during an expensive 17 day tour of Asia. There was nothing plus about the Macau leg. Their website photos show an impressive hotel tower and boasts "262 classic and elegant designed guest rooms". We obviously got booked into a classic room - designed for 13th Century travellers who like to sleep on the floor. The bed was so rediculously hard - I suspect it was just a box spring with a board - no mattress. The room was so tiny - that the chair beside the bed had no leg room at all (you couldn't use it). The linen was also classic - grey and threadbare. The bathroom soap was postage size. Remote to the TV was broken. Water not usable to brush teeth - used bottled water (common in Asia). Towels rough like a floor mat.
Curously, when we checked in - before we saw the room - we and fellow guests from Canada were offered an instant upgrade - for $100HK cash (credit cards not accepted). This appeared to us to be a scam to short-change the Best Western chain - if in fact they are actually members.
I demanded, and got an upgrade for free. The room was bigger and mildly better - bed still rock-hard.
The hotel was not near the major casinos but was in walking distance of the business section. The fog (or smog?) in Macau was so thick - we didn't know where the casinos were. Since the two languages in Macau are Chinese and Portugese, we hesitated to take a taxi that evening. Next day I hiked the two miles to a major casino, just to gauk at the outside - it was time to go catch our Macau ferry back to Hong Kong. What a waste of time.
Meanwhile, my wife tried the small gaming room in the hotel basement with Mocha slots. The air was thick with smoke - but the walls were plastered with "NO SMOKING" signs. I asked why - since this was a "no smoking" hotel. The guards and staff just shrugged. Staff were abrupt and grumpy. The "free wifi" didn't work anywhere - too weak to connect (I was able to connect in all other hotels in Asia - and even on our riverboat cruise). Never saw the pool on the roof (too much fog) as shown in their brochure. Worst stay in our 17 days in Asia - which included Cambodia.
We stay often in Best Western hotels, this must be a Chinese counterfeit.
Room Tip: Don't stay here unless you are used to sleeping on the ground. Book directly into a major Casino...
