We decided to join a group of friends over Chinese New Year at the last minute and therefore only booked this a week and a half before arrival.
In recent years, prices in Macau even at non-peak times have gone through the roof and so we were not surprised to see that at Chinese New Year most branded hotels were charging US$300-400 per night.
The comments on TripAdvisor, whilst not negative, did not exude enthusiasm and therefore it was with some trepidation that we decided that in the interests of actually having a few dollars to spend whilst there, we would plump for the Royal.
We were actually very pleasantly surprised: The hotel is located more towards the centre of Macau proper and, whilst fairly characterless as a building, is nestled among old Macanese backstreets. Whilst I was told that there is a gaming room somewhere in the building, it is not obvious and therefore the hotel does not suffer from (or benefit from, depending on your point of view) the full-on adult playground experience that applies to many of the other newer hotels. Indeed, if you're looking to spend your time at the casinos/extravaganzas of the Venetian or Galaxy, this is definitely in the wrong location; if, on the other hand, you want to get a taste of (what's left) of yesteryear's Macau, this is a good base.
The rooms are best described as top quality four star: absolutely spotless, comfortable furnishings and a reasonable (but not generous) size. We stayed in their standard (which I think they termed "Deluxe") room. As is always the case in China, the bed was a little too hard for our taste, but not so much as to interrupt sleep. Our only criticisms would be the lack of a room safe and that the bath towels are on the small side.
In the case of the towels, their less than average size was aggravated by the hotel only providing two per room, which meant that when Mrs. GweiloOnTheMove washed her hair, Mr. GweiloOnTheMove had to make do with a soggy towel!
In conclusion, this is an excellent, comfortable, clean traveller's hotel that, by Macau standards is fair value for money.
