“Functional and Comfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

We decided to join a group of friends over Chinese New Year at the last minute and therefore only booked this a week and a half before arrival.

In recent years, prices in Macau even at non-peak times have gone through the roof and so we were not surprised to see that at Chinese New Year most branded hotels were charging US$300-400 per night.

The comments on TripAdvisor, whilst not negative, did not exude enthusiasm and therefore it was with some trepidation that we decided that in the interests of actually having a few dollars to spend whilst there, we would plump for the Royal.

We were actually very pleasantly surprised: The hotel is located more towards the centre of Macau proper and, whilst fairly characterless as a building, is nestled among old Macanese backstreets. Whilst I was told that there is a gaming room somewhere in the building, it is not obvious and therefore the hotel does not suffer from (or benefit from, depending on your point of view) the full-on adult playground experience that applies to many of the other newer hotels. Indeed, if you're looking to spend your time at the casinos/extravaganzas of the Venetian or Galaxy, this is definitely in the wrong location; if, on the other hand, you want to get a taste of (what's left) of yesteryear's Macau, this is a good base.

The rooms are best described as top quality four star: absolutely spotless, comfortable furnishings and a reasonable (but not generous) size. We stayed in their standard (which I think they termed "Deluxe") room. As is always the case in China, the bed was a little too hard for our taste, but not so much as to interrupt sleep. Our only criticisms would be the lack of a room safe and that the bath towels are on the small side.

In the case of the towels, their less than average size was aggravated by the hotel only providing two per room, which meant that when Mrs. GweiloOnTheMove washed her hair, Mr. GweiloOnTheMove had to make do with a soggy towel!

In conclusion, this is an excellent, comfortable, clean traveller's hotel that, by Macau standards is fair value for money.

“Very average, small rooms but good location... NOT a 5 star hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

We booked this hotel after reading good reviews on this hotel. Granted it was a last minuite booking over the Chinese New Year period, we managed to get a room with 2 single beds. First impressions, the lobby was quite ordinary and more 4 star rather. Rooms were very small, even more after we put a baby cot in there. Rooms/bathroom looks newly renovated, but the tightness of the room size was quite disappointing. The mattress was firm and quite comfortable but the pillows were just too flat and i had to fold it in half. The pool was closed for renovation, and although the hotel website did state that it will be done by end 2011, we were disappointed that it wasn't. The hotel gym was moved to a room with a view of some dirty buildings... totally makeshift. The final disappointment was our checkout... we requested a late checkout but they declined. As we were travelling with an infant, we then requested the use of a room for baby diaper changes should we need it after checking out and they initially said it was not possible. They even went as far to say we could change the baby in the lobby! (I asked if they meant i could change the baby on the check-in counter). Only upon complaining to the manager did they offer the use of the makeshift "gym". Overall disappointing stay, even its proximity to some of the tourist attractions couldn't make us come back again...

Room Tip: Dont rely on good reviews - read the bad ones!

“Very Convinient to Everywhere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

I traveled free and easy with 2 young kids for the first time to Macau. It is oh my god so near to lots of attractions in the guide book that I brought with me. From the hotel, it is 10 mins walk to the park of Guia Fortress, 30 sec walk (yap, only 30 sec) to Vasco da Gama Garden and 20 mins walk to St Paul Ruin and its surrounding shopping area. Best of all, there is a bus stop that has nearly all the public buses that travel thru Macau Island and Taipa and it is only 2 mins walk from the hotel! My kids even have sufficient time to go back to hotel room and have a nap, then continue the tour again. The only bad thing is they don't have WIFI in the hotel rooms and we have to use the free hotel WIFI at the lobby. The lobby is very small and has limit seating area and can be quite a chaos when the large group of tourists check-in or out.

“A Good Value Alternative”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

This hotel is a good value alternative to the very expensive international chain hotels in Macau, particularly those connected to the casinos. This is a very good hotel, with good customer service and the rooms are more than acceptable. The location is fine - the centre is only a 10 minute walk away. Don't bother waiting for taxis outside the hotel - there aren't that many taxis in Macau so if one doesn't come along soon, then walk or take the hotel's free bus to somewhere like the Grand Lisboa. The hotel was refurbishing the pool area but there was minimal disruption and inconvenience. The Vasco da Gama restaurant serves a good breakfast and lunch buffet - the lunch is particularly good value at 980MOP (less 10% discount for hotel residents). Don't eat there for dinner, though, as there are so many great restaurants to suit all budgets in Macau! The free bus to the Venetian is a useful service as is the free bus to the ferry terminal and back - it runs every 30 minutes which is fine (only the very biggest and most expensive hotels run buses every 10 minutes! At the ferry terminal, follow signs to the Hotel buses and wait there for the gold coloured Hotel Royal bus! If you can't wait a few minutes, then get a taxi for the short ride to the hotel.

“Not really five star, but good regardless”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

Not sure this hotel is quite lives up to five star standard but regardless it is a nice hotel and reletively inexpensive. Personally I would classify it as a very good four star hotel.

Room was a bit "tired" but was clean and over all fine for the price we paid.

Not much happening in the immediate area but only a 15-20 minute walk to Senado Sqr.

Had a real issue getting from the ferry terminal to the hotel as there are absolutely no indication or signs saying where to wait for the shuttle. Nearly all of the other hotels had signs up and uniformed staff around to assist guests to their shuttles. We ended up asking one of the other hotel operators where we should wait. We had to wait nearly 45 minutes until a van with the hotels name on it went by and we flagged him down. Very disorganised, we would have just got a taxi but there were 5 of us with suitcases.

Breakfast was very good with a wide selection and staff were attentive. The indoor pool was also very good.

Service was adequate but definately not five star.
