We arrived in Macau with no hotel reservation, which I now realise is a very foolish thing to do. Hotels get booked up quickly, especially at the weekends when the casinos are rammed with visiting Chinese gamblers.
The Metropole had a room, and we said 'yes' straight away, as we feared we may be consigned to the street otherwise.
It was a little box, with no windows. Thankfully, the bed was comfy enough and the bathroom/shower excellent.
A daily breakfast buffet was included in the price.
Location-wise, it is right in the centre of town. Near the casinos (if you like that sort of thing) and the main square/shopping area.
We loved Macau, especially the food, but next time we'll definitely book!

Metropole's value for money

The Metropole's just some minutes' walk from some of Macau's world heritage sites (eg, Ruins of St Paul and the Senado), shops, restaurants (incl. 2 McDonalds, Pizza Hut), bus stops and casinos. Altho' our 8th floor room faces the main road, it was quiet - just perfect for a good night's rest after long walks around Macau.

The front desk staff speak English and they were friendly. All said, the $60 a night we paid was value for money. The room was spacious (although we must say the mattress was rather hard) and there's a long bath. Other travellers have complained about smoky rooms in their review but luckily we didn't face this problem.

Some tips:
- Since the hotel doesn't provide airport transfer and hailing a taxi from the hotel can be difficult, an easy and cheap way to get to the airport would be to take the bus #11 or #33 (less than $1) to Taipa, stop near the Best Western hotel and hail a taxi from there.
- And if you arrive in Macau airport after 4pm, you can get the MT2 bus which goes direct to Macau Square which is just 3 mins' walk from Metropole.)
- The hotel has a free shuttle van service to the Macau ferry terminal from which you can get the ferry to Hong Kong. Take the same shuttle if you're arriving in Macau from Hong Kong.
- Take the shuttle van if you want to go the Venetian Resort - you'll see the resort's buses waiting there.
- Get a free Macau tourism map from the hotel; you'll find the bus route information printed.

Stay in this hotel for 2 nights from 16-18 Aug 2007. Booked this hotel mainly bcos of the price. Was on budget cos decide to set aside more $$ for shopping in HK.

The good thing abt this hotel is the location.. Within waliking distance to most of the place of interest. Senado Square is juz behind, Ruins of St Paul, Mount Fortress all are within walkin distance. From the hotel you can see the casinos. Lisboa, Wynn. are all nearby. The staff service was ok for the price we paid.. friendly receoptionist, helpful bellboy..

The bad thing abt this hotel is the condition, it is old veree old.. and there is a tabacoo smell in the room.. the Bed was HARD!! the towel dun seem clean enuff.. the toilet is yucky.. the shower curtain look horrible with stains.. The most horrible thing is when i open the wardrobe to take the hanger.. I tink it had not been open for ages!! It is so smelly and look dirty!!

The Metropole's low price and the fact that it usually has vacancies tempts people like myself and yourself to book.

Do not do so! Booking at the Metropole Hotel would be a terrible mistake.

The nightmare begins:
The furnishings are old, the smell is bad. Remoulding is underway, so that the aircon disenses a heavy smell of dust to every room, giving you a headache and a sore throat. The water has somehow been affected by the renovation, so tap water is undrinkable. There are small flying roaches. The TV does not work. The bed is so hard that I (who usually prefer hard beds) assumed that the matress had been forgotten till I discovered my error in the morning. The bacthroom towels are the sort of icky threadbare things you would expect, the soap microscopic. Few of the staff speak English.

I checked out and moved into the Sintra in the morning. At HK$120 more, this is a real hotel - bigger rooms, new decor, clean feeling, complimentary water, a nice display of coloured bottles of shampoos in the backrooms, which also offers nice thick luxurious towels. It's Mariott-like. You will feel pampered at the Sintra Hotel.

We foolishly booked this place online only to get there and discover the room was small, dark and dingy and smelled very strongly of stale smoke.
The room was very old fashioned and unclean and there was even some kind of blood stain on the toilet seat! We complained straight away and they eventually kept us waiting until a cleaner had gone up to clean it. But it was still there when we returned to the room. Needless to say we left as fast as possible, I probably wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone sorry.
