East Asia Hotel is an old grand hotel that has seen a better day. But it is still a comfortable place to stay in a great location. My husband and I both slept very well here and the price was a huge discount when compared to newer hotels or the casinos. It still was not cheap - our double en-suite room cost US$ 70 but it was Christmas week and this was a fraction of what other hotels wanted.
Even though East Asia is dated, I enjoyed staying there and would again. My primary reason is the location. It is in the historic area of Macau - an easy stroll to the main square and that is where we wanted to be every day. If you are in Macau for the casinos, well they are a ways from this. But we were in Macau to soak up the culture and see the historic sites, this was all super easy to do from this hotel.
We booked into the East Asia through Macau.com and our check-in was very smooth. Although I was not very impressed with the first room they gave us. In looking at the fire-escape map on the wall, I saw that it was pretty much the smallest room on the floor - so I sent my husband down to get us something better, and he did. The second room was at the end of the hall and was quite spacious. Both had been ensuite but the second room was a twin and much larger. We decided to go with that.
Our room had two twin beds, nightstands, a table with two chairs, a desk with a mirror behind, plus a wardrobe. The bathroom was clean and included a bath/shower, toilet, and sink. All the basics. There was air-con (although in December did not use) and a TV with some English channels. Sheets were clean and blanket warm.
The first room had a bit of a smokey smell to it. But the one we stayed in was completely fine. No smell and bigger windows so more light.
This hotel did have an elevator which was nice. The front desk staff were efficient and helpful. The beds are hard but that is Asia, and we found them very comfortable.
Again, it is a dated hotel that could use a facelift. But with most people wanting to stay in the new glitzy casino hotels I doubt this will happen. So stay here if you like old world charm and don't mind a few cracks in the paint. For its condition, I would have liked it to be a bit cheaper - and I think outside of "high season" it is. We just happened to be in Macau Christmas week when most places doubled or tripled prices. So stay outside of busy times and try to get it for cheaper.
