“Nice Place, clean rooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2011

My partner and I have just returned from a week at Tigaki's Star. We had room 209 and i will go over the negatives of it first. The shower was quite small and with a curtain rather than a screen which i didn't like much as it kept sticking to me! Also one bed was really uncomfortable (mine of course my partners was ok) but rather than letting that annoy me i just got one of the thick blankets from the cupboard and put this under the sheet which smoothed it right out and was then nice to sleep on! The positives are rooms were clean and quiet, aircon was very good as was fridge and both free and the balcony was a very nice size and view was great. The rooms are all in apartment like blocks which is very nice, the grounds were well kept and attractive. Although we didn't use the pool it was a very good size, very clean but i do think sunbeds would be a problem if you don't get one in the morning as when we returned in the afternoons there were none free which wasn't a problem as Tigaki beach was very nice and clean and nicely shallow.
Now to breakfast, i did think there could be room for improvement here, there is only one toaster which isn't very fast so creating the first place where i have ever seen bread waiting on top of the toaster as you would expect a towel on a sunbed! Also if you like a hearty breakfast there wasn't a massive choice, only bread/rolls, 2 types of cereal, yoghurt, melon, cold meats, cheese and boiled and fried eggs only. Breakfast is also only available 7.30 - 9.30 which meant that the majority of times it was busy, it seems you can get there before 7.30 which proved the most successful for us. I did find the receptionists helpful and it was great that on our last day our transfer wasn't arriving until 11.15pm so for €20 we could keep the room right up until then. Overall it was a good hotel with just a few minor points, nothing to ruin a holiday, we thoroughly enjoyed it.
As for the resort Tigaki was a good mix of tourist shops (i'm afraid i do like a bit of tat shopping) bars and restaurants. We ate somewhere different every night and didn't have a bad meal. Its quite a low key resort which is just our taste and i liken it to Skala in Kefalonia or Pefkos in Rhodes.
Now to the mosquitos...i never normally get bitten but did heed the other warnings and use insect repellent, obviously i did not apply enough though as on the 2nd night we ate at the Spaghetti Factory and i got absolutely bitten to pieces, i would definately recommend thick application as it didn't happen again after that.
For car hire i would recommend Sevi who did us a very good deal for 6 days and then on the final day we hired a buggy from Hard Moto which i would definately recommend for seeing more of the island.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the salt lake for the sunset.

“Clean and quiet hotel in lovely Tigaki”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 September 2011

We had an enjoyable stay in Tigaki's star. Although there were some (little) negative points we really loved staying here and we both had a great feeling about this hotel. To give you an idea of how we experienced this hotel, I divided my review in positive, negative and +/- points.

+ clean and quiet rooms; the complexes looked really nice and greek
+ really nice staff
+ very nice and clean swimming pool area; big swimming pool and enough sun beds
+ close to the beach
+ well working airco and fridge

- beds: during the first night my boyfriend and I switched beds because I could really feel the springs of the mattress pushing against my body. Lucky the other mattress wasn't that bad at all and my boyfriend didn't mind sleeping on the other one.

+/- breakfast was fine, nothing to complain about but I would have liked some croissants,... Orange juice wasn't fresh, but was not bad.

+(/-) location
+ The hotel is located just a few metres from the mainstreet, which is really lovely in the evening. Lots of good restaurants, bars,... (at least if you're not looking for the big discotheques) We advise you to visit Nisiotiki in Tigaki. It's a really lovely restaurant. We ate here three times, which we normally never do! Have a drink in Katras cocktailbar. The cocktails are lovely, so is the music.
(-) If you don't hire a bike, buggy, etc. Tigaki is a bit far from Kos town. Because if you want to visit the other villages like Kefalos, Zia,... you always have to go to Kos first to take the bus. We hired a bike for 3 days because there weren't enough busses 1) or to go from Tigaki to Kos to catch the bus to the other villages 2) or to go back. So we had a 24 kilometres ride every day. But if you hire a buggy, quad or moped the location shouldn't be a problem.

So, we definitely adivse this hotel if you're looking for a lovely hotel and surrounding!

“Ok for the price but a bit boring”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 August 2011

The hotel is clean and the stuff is polite - I can't say friendly because we did not interact a lot. Breakfast is the same every day and really poor: sirup juice, water, tea, coffee, 2 types of cereals, butter, marmalade, one type of cheese and salami, feta cheese, yogurt and eggs. Bread looks old. There is only one type of fruit at disposal.
Tigaki is boring, pubs in the evenings are almost empty and the restaurants adapted to british food (they were advertising fresh salmon and putting a strange sauce on the lamb!). You will hardly find fresh fish in Kos.
The best place to be is Kefalos - it has nothing to do with the rest of the island and it's amazing. I personally prefer smaller Greek islands and this crisis period is not a good time to go. The atmosphere is not one of the best.

“Can only add to the praise.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 August 2011

I can't think of anything much to add to the earlier reviews. Most of the negative points I have read seem rather personal things. For instance I though the breakfast was fine whereas others seemed to think it a little lacking.
If I could give 4.5 I would. I find it hard to give a perfect score to anyplace.
One original observation was that prices for the stay seemed to vary quite a lot between websites. I booked via the hotels own website and found it easy to do but I later found a few discount websites offering the same for cheaper. If you can be bothered then shop around.
Moquitoes weren't too bad when we were there, though one night at the fish restaurant (Poseidon) I forgot to put spray on and got badly bitten.
I can think of nothing to stop me recommending it to anyone.

“Quiet hotel and surrounding, restful, neat. Nice garden, large pool.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2011

Very good 3-star hotel. Neat & clean rooms (everyday, except on sunday). The best airco ever seen (silent at night). This comes free and aslo tv & very good working fridge. Hard beds yes (but very clean). Warm water in shower when you get up early and you're before the others (only heated with sunboiler). Large descending (1m to 3m) 25m pool excellent for real swimming. Quiet hotel & pool (overday, evening & night). Good poolbar (cocktails, food) & service to your sunbed!
Breakfast is everyday the same, but no complaints, Enough to choose from, more than at home for the most of us! But yes, we are on holliday. Everyday rolls, bread, cornflakes, water melon, yoghurt, feta, salami, cheese,... eggs, toaster (try the bigger grill for making your toasts (njam) better then the small one. Orange juice is of course not fresh, where is it (& free)? But if i had the change, i would love to pay for it every morning! The breakfast terrace needs more love. Some large plants, pots, flowers could make this a better place.
Discrete but friendly owners (older couple). The reason why they are a bit reserved, they both don't speak and understand much English. But no problem, they have Miss Sunshine in the evenings. A lovely greek girl with everyday a big smile from here to... & her English is better than mine. Warning: very expensive phone calls when using the room phone! You shouldn't expect this anymore in 2011!
The salt lake, hmm... beautiful nature right in the backgarden. 45 flamingo's seen first week of July. But also mosquito's, how much? You don't wanna hear it. This hotel doesn't deserve bad critics but i can't hide this. From 30th june till 9th of juli every! evening after 9h20 PM it was mosquito terror. Only in the evenings & nights. With our 8 y old child no problem to go sleep early. But after sunset you saw a stunning nature phenomenon: monsters coming out of the salt lake. Not some thousands of mosquito's but several millions (i filmed this too) building dozens of tornado's hundred meters high in the sky. It was unbelievable spectacular but at the same time frightening like a Hitchcock terror movie. After 15 minutes they swarmed over Tigaki searching for every attractive light. Strange thing is they bite but not as much as you would expect (too small?). Sitting outside was not possible in Tigaki. But with long trousers, long sleeves and some mozzie spray it was not that bad, without it was... ough.
Luckily after 9 July they sudden disappeared, only some left behind in the evenings & nights at Tigaki.
-> Little Secret: Many know "Petrino" in Kos town; the best restaurant of Kos (and one of the best in Greece). Exquisite food (fresh fish, seafood souflaki), amazing terrace garden. But what little know is that they have a second place in Kos, right in Tigaki: "Spaghetti Factory" at The Mall. All about pasta, but they have a coock which (my meaning) is better than in Petrino. Their fresh Sole Fish you must try! Mussels with ouzo, Pizza "Factory", Spaghetti Carbonare all prepared better than you can dream off. They have a wonderfull terrace on top the best sunset view of Tigaki, stay at night at their cosmopolitan looking bar and dance around and enjoy this magnifique place. Best quality food in Tigaki at a good price. Despite of the mosquito's we will come back very soon and "Spaghetti Factory" is definitely one of the reasons to come back for.
-> Some things: don't put towels on the poolbeds, this is a not done (in many places it is forbidden). Taxi prices are on the Radio Taxi website (27 euro airport-tigaki). Bike:€5, Scooter90cc:€12, Car:€35. Renting: more days is much cheaper. Beach: 2beds and umbrella€5

Room Tip: Every room is almost equal here. Groundfloor or 1 up. Bungalow type hotel. Some hotelrooms in the ma...
