Husband and i stayed here 10th - 17th October 11 on an AI basis. Having stayed at the Tropic Garden in June (also rated 4*) was hoping for something similar - how wrong could I be. Rooms were fine, living area a bit on the small side, but ok. Bedroom a fair size with adequate wardrobe space however it is partitioned from living area with sliding doors. Rooms were clean and towels changed almost every day. Our balcony overlooked the road - not the best view but could see the sea in the distance.
There were quite a few people who I can only describe as selfish - running around corridors, slamming doors, screaming at each other really late at night but the hotel has no security (that was visible) and did not seem to care a jot. Perhaps they were all suffering from almost end of season itis?
The food I can only describe as awful and I am not that fussy an eater. At breakfast, the bacon, sausages etc were swimming in grease and cold. The scrambled egg you could cement bricks with and had a "lovely" orange crust on it. I tried the cereal one morning in desperation but that was like cardboard. Most days I stuck to toast with a piece of fresh fruit. Lunches and dinners were interesting combinations - roast beef that was pork, carbonarra sauce that was split and curdled and looked like baby sick, chips so greasy....I could go on and on here. I decided to stick to salads most days however after one smallish helping of a vegetable salad (probably made from the night before's left overs as were many of the dishes) I was very sick. I did try the grilled fish and chicken on a couple of occasions but can only say I was dubious about how well the chicken was cooked and the upshot of all of this is I continued to be ill for several days and after we came home.
Most of the time there were 2 waitresses and the odd waiter who checked you in on arrival then cleared plates and served the drinks. The waitresses seemed more intent on enjoying a good gossip and one in particular chewed gum the whole time, even when talking and serving (perhaps it is acceptable out there?). I must also comment on the number of dirty plates that were supposed to be clean and for use. Given the amount of greasy food served up, the dishwasher setting obviously not doing the job.
We skipped breakfast one day and had a toasted sandwich from the snack bar by the pool which was ok. The chips served there were much better looking than in the restaurant by miles as was obvious by the number of people using the snack bar.
The hotel pool is rectangular and quite large.......but freezing. Even the kiddlies pool was cold.
The entertainment was the "usual" - mostly for the children with the obligatory game of bingo after the kiddies disco. The flamenco dancers were very good and made an enjoyable change.
I love Es Cana as a resort - it is small and friendly and a great base for expoloring with the bus station, ferry port and little train all on your doorstep but I would not recommend the Atlantic Hotel other than perhaps on a s/catering basis.
Room Tip: Pot luck really depending on who you get as neighbours.
