Well...where to start really. The happiest day of your life is to get married and we couldn't have asked for a more perfect day. It was such a shame to have our honeymoon spoilt by a very inept resort. When I say inept I mean all the way through, from the bell boy at Reception all the way up to the Manager.
There were that many faults on the holiday that to go into a short story would turn into a very long one, so I'll stick with the bullet points to help future travellers / honeymooners.
• Room not set up for honeymoon. – First impressions are everything. So, on your honeymoon you expect that little bit more. The room they took us to was not welcoming. We were supposed to be getting flowers, sparkling wine, fresh fruit and water. Well...we got none of those, but a nice fresh smell of faeces coming through the air conditioning system.
• WASPS, WASPS, WASPS. – This resort simply has an infestation of wasps. There are wasp nests everywhere. On the ceilings on the top of ventilation systems, next to the pool. So where there is food and drink, there were hundreds of wasps. You could not go 5 minutes without one near you. After 2 weeks of this it gets very frustrating.
• Hotel at Capacity - During the booking we were told the hotel was completely full, so that was why the price was higher. For the whole 2 weeks there was hardly anybody there.
• Cleanliness – Over the whole 2 weeks the pool was cleaned twice. This led to hundreds of flies floating around the pool, dirty decking and horrible smells.
• Entertainment – A bit of a laughing stock really. The singers were nice enough, but it reminded me of a bad Karaoke night at a local bar in England than a supposedly 5* resort.
• Animation Team – For me animation means liveliness and having spirit. This animation team were more like 2 of the 7 dwarves, Dopey and Grumpy. At no point in the trip did I actually see them work, apart from serving a drink once, which the girl actually shouted ‘I hate doing this work’. The rest of the time they either looked hung over or were eating their free food at the buffet.
• The Reception Staff – Favourite quote of the holiday. ‘I don’t know’. They didn’t seem to know much about anything and when we had an issue the response was like a frightened cat. Customer service is going that extra mile for the customer. Not to stand there with a blank face and solve absolutely nothing. This leads onto the bell boy, whose favourite task at work was to watch TV not to help people who were staying there with their heavy suitcases. A bit weird to be honest.
• Private Pool, not so private – We paid for a private pool, which was stunning. Only the problem was other guests came into our pool. This deems the pool not private. Again, when we asked for the issue to be sorted it was stated ‘Are they really bothering you’. Well...yes, because we paid a lot more money for a PRIVATE pool. The issue was not sorted.
• View – You looked to the left and the view was beautiful. You looked straight forward and had a nice view of derelict buildings and a dumping ground for what we presumed were staff of the resort. Pipes, old air conditioning units, bricks. Lovely!
• Resort on Shut Down – We went in the middle of August for 2 weeks. A word of warning...the resort seems to be winding down at this point. This meant less chefs, bars in the resort shutting down and even less entertainment than a couple of nights. So, basically nothing in our last week. This led to less of everything and quality dropping.
• Drainage Smell – As mentioned earlier on the smell of faeces in this resort was nothing short of vile. The front of the hotel had about 50 grids all venting a disgusting smell. This floated over to the air conditioning system, which then pumped the smell all over the room. Not nice!
A short insight into the Resort Management of the Mareblue Apostolata. The management were rude and it came across that there was a clear hierarchy of class divide between staff members. We live in a time now where equality is important. We realise that clear staff and manager boundaries have to be set, but we did not expect the manager and other staff members of higher positions to be stood around doing nothing all day and literally barking orders at staff who were working very hard.
In fact, the only time we ever saw the manager move was when he sat down for a convenient fully serviced meal brought to him and his family by the staff who were also serving resort guests. They were treated better in that half an hour, than we ever felt during our stay. If only the management worked as hard as staff like Gerasimos, than this resort might have been a really nice place to stay. But, all we were left with was a string of broken promises and an underlining impression that something is just quite not right at the heart of the Mareblue Apostolata.
If you are looking at booking this Resort think twice about your options. You may want something nearer to Skala, as there is no beach in walking proximity. We would recommend getting a hire car. We got this from CBR in Skala (€160 for 3 days) and we had a fantastic time exploring the Island. It says a lot when your best time of your relaxing honeymoon is spent away from the resort you are staying at.
The one bright spark, that made the honeymoon not a total disaster was the standard of food. We stayed on an All Inclusive basis and the food was always great. They had a great selection for meat eaters like myself, but catered well for vegetarians also. Chefs like Theodoras were the only saving grace for a poorly ran resort.
Overall, it is quite clear that this resort is far from the 5* rating it gets. Looking at previous comments from other travellers it is clear that problems do exist at this resort. Managing a place like this means you have to take into consideration customer issues and collate information to improve standards further in future. Looking at the lack of responses on Trip Advisor from management suggests their issues are deep. Whether it's laziness or they do not value customer comments I do not know. An absolute major let down.
Stay somewhere else. The proof is in the Pictures.
