“Comfortable and save budget hostel”

I stayed at hospedaje esmeralda for one night after visiting the Tonina Maya Ruins. I had a room with shared bathroom for 190 pesos a night and found the place comfortable and reasonably quiet a night, however the walls are a bit thin and there is a bit of an echo when people talk. I also could not get much hot water out of the shower in the morning but perhaps I did not let the water run long enough.

The mexican lady who owns the place is very nice and very helpful and provided me with info and a map on how to get to Tonina on my own. I did not try the in-house restaurant. I used the book exchange which is extensive.

“The best margarita in Chiapas?”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2009

Hospadaje Esmeralda is the legacy of the former Rancho Esmeralda, which was once rated as one of the Top Ten Places to Stay in Mexico by Lonely Planet. In 2004, the American owners were forced to leave their ranch near the Maya ruins of Tonina by Zapatista rebels. This guesthouse in town was the last gift of the owners to insure that some of their workers were able to continue making a living; many of the furnishings and decorations came from the rancho.
We received one of the warmest welcomes upon arrival we've ever had anywhere. In addition to the guest rooms, the managers will provide any meal upon request; Lonely Planet rightly says this is the best food in Ocosingo.
We searched in town for a margarita, only to return to the hotel whereupon the staff made one of the best margaritas we've had anywhere. They used plenty of premium tequila and fresh ingredients--we were told later that the recipe for these margaritas is another legacy of the Rancho.
In the morning, we had delicious homemade granola (another legacy) and the excellent Chiapan organic coffee.
The Hospadaje is simple, low key, with rustic furniture and clean but basic bathrooms. But you will leave feeling like you've lived a slice of Chiapan history.

“Practical, but less than comfortable”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 August 2008

We stayed here for one night. We arrived at 6pm to find that they had a room with a double bed for MEX$230. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was very small (we tripped over our bags). There was a fan, but the outside window doesn't open- very stuffy. The shared bathroom was clean. An honor bar was available, but we didn't use it. The breakfast was decent and cost about $40 per person.

The shady front porch was very comfortable and we spent some time there eating coconut ice cream from the place on the corner. The location is perfect. An easy walk from the bus station with packs and also an easy walk to the Tonina-bound collectivos. The hotel provides a walking map. All in all, a reasonable value.

  • Liked — Location and service
  • Disliked — Room too small and stuffy
