We stayed in the perhaps nicest lake-facing room where the view is not obscured by other buildings or lampposts (I think it was no 102, next to last room anyway). The room was nice and spacious, with neutral, relaxing tones of blue, and sofa, minibar, closet, tables and chairs etc. The balcony has a nice view but gets very hot midday and would need an umbrella. The main road around the lake passes right between this hotel and the lake so the traffic under your balcony is quite noisy, though the good windows block out the noise at night. Its not a balcony that you would sit on for ages though, what a difference it would be without the road!
The hotel is 4 star which seems a bit over the top, though it is clean and new. The service is friendly but a bit amateurish, and information in English about amenities in the area and a map of Lovere town would have been nice.
The restaurant is a relaxed place, good for families with children, and the food had some real highlights but was uneven. The tasting menu with fish from the lake was a dissapointment, but the veal with porcini mushrooms that I had the first day was amazing. Had it again day 3 and it looked different and tasted less superb. Try Franciacorta lokal wines, they are great!
Breakfast was good by Italian measures, though if you came towards the end of breakfast you got much less of a choice. There was scrambled and boiled eggs, white breadrolls, cakes and croissants, fruit, yoghurt and unspectacular ham and chease. To this juice and there was a coffee machine, BUT also free espressa/cappucciono/americano from the bar! My husband ordered two double expressos for himself every morning and they didn't twich an eyebrow.
We also had treatments at the wellness centre, wich was good value for money but not a superduper place. The chocolate massage really covers you in real chocolate which was fun, but it isn't much of a massage and didn't do any wonders. The wellness relax path that gives you 2 hours in their little relax area is nice enough, with pool, some hydromassage jets, a finnish and turkish sauna and some misty scented showers. They make a bit much of this small but beautiful space in their marketing however.
We drove around the lake and took a boat out to Monte Isola island, which is relaxingly traffic-free and where you can swim in the lake and hire bikes and go around the 9 km path around the island. We hired a tandem bike and had a hilarious time! Worth knowing is that there is no beach or place to swim in the lake in Lovere itself, and that the lake was cold even in summer, colder than the sea had been.
The best thing was that the area didn't feel like a tourist trap and wasn't very crowded, the guests were mainly italians and hence prices much better than in the touristier areas.
