My family of five took my older sister to Portugal to visit Fatima, and it turned out that the Casa Alta Royal Lodge was the highlight of our journey. We were looking for some place special to stay since the primary purpose of our whole trip was to visit Fatima, but we could not find anything in the Fatima that seemed like a special place. My wife literally spent weeks looking for a place that would be pleasant for my sister but would also have a pool and be relaxing for our three children (15,13, and 6). Most places in the Fatima area seem to be places to stay one night, and then quickly leave. We were fortunate to finally find the Casa Alta Royal Lodge website and we quickly decided to spend more time in the Fatima area so we could enjoy the lodge. Fr. John and Valentina are just wonderful hosts. The lodge is beautiful, both indoor and out, and the meals Valentina made were just delicious, for both adults and children. Our children adored Prince, the beautiful dog, and they loved the location right near the ruins of the Ourem Castle which they loved walking around and inside. There are many great castles in Portugal, but at Casa Alta, you can live right next to one!
The lodge is a short taxi ride from the Fatima shrine site, perhaps fifteen minutes. We wondered at first if that would be too far, but the drive is beautiful and the taxi services we used were very friendly and easily picked us up wherever we were and whenever we called.
We used Casa Alta as a base by which to explore other cities in the area, including Obidos, Alcoabaca, and Batalha. But the best part of the trip was to relax and enjoy ourselves in the beautiful surroundings of the lodge. The kids loved the pool, the grounds, walking around the tiny, pristine town surrounding the old castle, and we adults found it very relaxing. We asked Fr. John to join us for dinner two nights, and it was a rare treat to learn what life in Portugal and the Fatima area is really like. When it was time to depart, my kids and sister were teary-eyed. Priceless.
I would recommend the Casa Alta Lodge for just about anyone, but for those making the pilgrimage to Fatima, staying as Casa Alta will make the journey extremely special.
