“no bad !!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2008

I stayed at the pousada Conde de Ourem because I needed a place for a couple of days while I was visiting the central part of Portugal: Fatima, Tomar and Bathala. The location is fine because is a mediaval hilltop but the problems are connected to the room (not well furnished) and the food : infact there were only 2 restaurants and the village is very-very small so there is any night-life!!!
The pool in not bad: I had a relaxing afternoon there!!!
I think that the car is essential to go there.

“bathroom smelled like pee and vomit”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 December 2007

Easy to find as there are signs for Pousada posted at all major roads, parking right in front, good breakfast. If not for the smell in the bathroom we probably would have like it. Get dinner ar the Rodzio Pizza in Ourem at Rua Dr. Neves Eliden - they have a wide selection of very unique and great testing pizzas including chocolate pizza!

“Interesting place”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 July 2007

The location is stunning, a medieval hilltop village that you can see from miles away. The Pousada is well signposted up the hill from the new town, but there are two roads that run up the hill. One is the sensible one that is perfectly drivable and the other...

I didn't find the staff as helpful as at the other Pousadas (they took a bit of persuasion to resolve a small problem) and the presence of their quality rating forms left at every table (with a pen) was a bit off-putting.

Since the hotel is converted from a number of houses the rooms are quite small, but still reasonable and well furnished. Parking can be interesting as there are only a few parking spaces immediately outside the hotel, but there are other places to park in the village (although I imagine it may be more tricky in the height of the season at the weekend).

Fatima - don't bother unless you are going there for a religious reason. It is the tackiest place I have been in a long time. Go to Tomar, far far nicer.

Also if you want somewhere different to visit nearby, there is a quarry with dinosaur footprints about 10km away - [-] It is 'mostly' signposted, but if you have a satnav it is here - N39 34 24.6 W8 35 56.1

“What a wonderful hilltop gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 November 2006

One of our 2 rooms in the main building has a large balcony with view of the valley. Excellent breakfast. The decor is a bit simplistic, unlike the paradores in Spain.

Unless you are driving, this hotel is not convenient at all to reach with public transportation or taxi. Also be mindful if your primary objective is to visit Fatima, although it's a mere few kilometres away, Ourem is on the other side of the hill so it takes about 30 minutes to reach.

We agree with one of the reviewers who mentioned that the approach from the castle is much more dramatic (hence more heart-stopping as well). If you follow the "Pousada" signs from the town center, you will reach the hotel via the more direct route, which is still impressive by American standard, but not unusual if you have visited the hilltowns of the Luberon or Umbria. So if you are adventurous, you can either take the ascent on the left hand side at the foot of the hill as soon as you leave town (past the roundabout where the school/open fair is located) - ignoring the sign directing you to bear right towards the shorter route to the pousada. Once you reach the top of the hill, you may have to ask for direction to the castle. From the castle, you will arrive at the pousada on your descent.
