“Peaceful Property”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 April 2008

We spent very little time at this hotel, as we arrived super late in the evening - we were lost trying to navigate in our rental car from Folgosinho to the hotel (we ate at this amazing carnivorous restaurant called 'O Albertino').

When we arrived we saw that two other diners from the same restaurant were at this very hotel! We smacked our heads for not following their car - but alas, we did get there due to two very VERY kind Samaritans we found taking a walk outside their home. They ended up getting into their own car and led us to the Hotel! I wish I got their address to send them a thank you card and gift! The people in Portugal are so kind and generous!

Ok back to the actual review of the hotel. We had to wait in the dark lobby for 15 minutes until someone came to help us - I know it was late at night (about midnight!) but it was a very uncomfortable wait, the lobby was a bit creepy in the darkness, the seating area was stiff and dark. We had to wait longer because a guest was waiting for some milk and cookies(?!?) from the counter staff.

We eventually got settled in and slept off the stressful night. The room is very spacious, as is the bathroom. We could hear families and children in the morning - going to the breakfast. We needed more sleep so we called the front desk to have ours delivered to our room. They asked us what drinks we wanted etc. The breakfast came promptly at the time we requested but there was no real space to eat it from. So we set it on the bed. Which is fine, that's what vacation is all about! The breakfast was decent: 2 croissants, 2 ham slices, 2 cheese slices, coffee and juice (tasted like Sunny D) 2 buns. We were sad we didn't get to check out what the buffet was like.

We had a balcony that overlooked the side of the property. Beautiful view of the area. We decided to look around the property before setting off to our next destination. They have a quaint garden/pool area. We were able to take some lovely photos. We think it's a nice place for families and seniors. The overall hotel was sooo quiet and I found the interior decor a bit stifling and formal. We definitely didn't take advantage of all it had to offer since we had to leave to drive to the coast.

The counter person in the morning was very helpful in assisting us in our driving itinerary. Overall it was a quiet restful place and the staff provided a nice departure experience compared to the stressful evening we had the night before (the stress was ours alone not due to the hotel at all).

  • Liked — beautiful property, spacious room and balcony view
  • Disliked — difficult to find if you're driving yourself, dark hotel interior

“Ordinary - did not live up to brochure”

We stayed as part of a tour with Voyages Jules Verne, with two other couples for three nights. This was the least enjoyable of four hotels in the ten day Northern Portugal trip. Dinners had to be selected at least 24 hours in advance and were bland and limited. The rooms were acceptable, three star in UK. The service was good and the staff generally attentive and friendly. The grounds were pleasant and the architecture was uninspiring, though the reception area was worthy of mention. There was some disturbance from work being carried out opposite the hotel entrance to cover up the spoil heaps from an old uranium mine. The overall disappointment was set against the fulsome write ups in promotional material. The hotel was far inferior to others on the tour, especially Quinta das Lagrimas and Casa da Calcada.

“Lovely Hotel”

a lovely hotel in fantastic surroundings. You feel like you've gone back 80 years, the archetecture and furnishing is fantatic. The rooms are nice, maybe a little old fashioned.

The restaurant is not the best in the areas but is fine if you want to eat in.

The hotel is often quiet and is set in lovely gardens.

“Feeling like a King”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 September 2005

Both myself and my wife have stayed at this hotel as part of a country tour that lasted one week. This was without any doubt the best hotel of the entire tour. The environment is out of this world. The food is excellente and the service wonderful. I'll be returning there soon.

“This hotel was beautiful”

My husband stayed over night in this hotel because we went on a 9 day tour in October 2001 to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. This place was really well kept and the furnishing were antique. The service was good and also the food. We would stay in this hotel again.
