“Worth a stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 October 2011

My wife and I stayed here en-route from London to Devon last week. The room we had has been referred to by other reviewers on TA as "small". For one night, it is fine, although at 6 foot, 2 inches, I could not walk upright in certain parts of the room!
The bathroom was great - a massive room with a roll top bath situated in the middle of the room. The only downside (for the people downstairs) was the fact that the old, wooden floors were so creaky!
We had dinner on the Saturday and the food was innovative and well cooked. I would say slightly pricey - I am from London and it makes me laugh on my travels round the country when people say London restaurant prices are sky high. I have certainly seen London prices in small villages outside of London and wonder if these are warranted.
Overall, worth a night's stay.

Room Tip: There is limited parking at the Inn and when we arrived at 7pm, most of the surrounding area was ful...

“Comfortable stay and lovely food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 July 2011

We stayed here for a couple of nights in July. It is in a lovely setting overlooking the green, and had a lovely garden area. The owner and staff were very nice and helpful. The rooms were clean. I would imagine it was furnished by a man as there were no little extras like cotton wool, bathrobes, biscuits. Also the toiletries were not replenished. There was also no drawer space for my clothes. The furniture was of high qualilty, but not all together practical. Food was lovely. It was alwalys full in the restaurant, even week days, so booking was essential. Breakfast was also very good. I was suprised that the pub was not open in the afternoon. I would have liked to sit out in the garden having an afternoon drink. Also if you wanted to check in between 3 and 6 you have to phone to get someone to come out to check you in. I would stay again.

“Enjoyed our second visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 July 2011

Stayed at The Devonshire Arms a couple of years ago, so when we found ourselves in the area again we decided on a second visit. Having found the front rooms a bit noisy the last time (due to the crossroads) we were offered the garden annexe but when we arrived we'd been "upgraded" - to the front .......... This was soon fixed with a front location away from the crossroads and all was well!

Food is great - both evening and breakfast and we were just sorry not to have more time to relax and enjoy the gardens. The staff are lovely and we would definitely return.

“Bit disappointed this time!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 July 2011

This was our 2nd visit to the Devonshire and this visit wasn't as good as our last. The setting is as beautiful as ever but certain things let it down this time.
We were allocated room 1. It had a very low sloping ceiling which made access in and out of bed - especially at night - very difficult and I am a fairly fit 40 year old. It would be impossible for an elderly or infirm person. Secondly there was no shower in the bathroom only a bath and one night the water was only lukewarm unlike the radiator which was hot, and with sweltering temps outside it made it very uncomfortable as the valve was stuck solid.
Lastly on the room, the blinds didn't keep out the light so the room was becomming light at 4am ish which contributed to disturbed sleep.
On a possitive note the food and friendliness of the staff was excellent.
If I'm being honest, for the price we paid (£280 for 2 nights) we probably wouldnt stay again.

“An excellent hotel in a great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 July 2011

In the centre of a charming village overlooking the village green it is in a stunning location. We didn't actually stay but talking with people who were staying they were delighted with their room.
There is a large restaurant area with table but the bar area has tables also and the same menu is served at both. The large corner table opposite the bar seats at least seven and ensures that you sample the ambience of the local hostelry.
The food is excellent - quite outstanding - and very reasonably priced. The duck breast confit was to die for! The service matched the the standard of the food and was attentive without being intrusive.
To write this review on Tripadvisor is probably the wrong thing to do - it will be difficult to get a table in future!
