“Stay here for a break from Amsterdam”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 May 2010

After reading some of the reviews on this hotel, I booked a room for my wife, 3 kids, and me. The room was very large---esp. by European standards---and comfortable. It's set in a golf resort area and if I were a golfer, I'd have loved the course.

PROs:
-Staff super nice
-Room price
-Room size
-Lots of hot water, towels
-Location, nice area, but close enough to A-dam (30 mins) that it was convenient

CONs:
-Breakfast expensive (13 euro/person)
-No in room coffee
-Some of the hotel is showing a little age (stained carpet, mirrors), but not horrible

Both my wife and I would definitely stay at Hampshire again and have already recommended it to a couple of friends.

“Perfect Base if you Have a Car”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 April 2010

We stayed here and used it as our base when visiting the areas around Amsterdam. If you have a car, it's perfect. You can take trips during the day to towns in the area and then catch the bus for days in Amsterdam itself where parking is hard to find and outrageously priced. The staff members were wonderful and we enjoyed the peacefulness of the location, especially after a long day in the city. However, we did find it almost impossible to get breakfast in town on Monday as things open very late or don't open at all. There is a McDonald's in town if you're desperate and the Bart's Bakery is fantastic when it's open (not Monday morning). We didn't have breakfast at the hotel as it seems silly to pay 14 Euros for kids who don't eat much. We would stay here again if we went back to Holland.

“DONT STAY HERE”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 October 2009

i stayed here on the 9 and 10 oct. the service was poor i waited at reception for 15 minutes befor beeing served during that time the staff were talking amongst themselves in golf shop part of reception.rooms were basic and they had channelss some english but there was a constant distinct utterly disgusting smel of stale water through out the room and this was not good. the hheating in the room did not work and when i asked them to check it they insisted it was working yes it was but it was bowing cold air. luckily we had a few spare duvets in the cupboard i think hotel is trying to cut cost of heating. the food was terrible and overpriced. i wasnt impressed put it like that not at all. minibar was also empty and upon checkout they tried to deny i left a cash deposit of 50 euros which i got after a fuss. terrible experience. not sure if itr wud be different for a golfing enthusiast as the golf grounds did seem nice.

“Wonderful Hotel even if you're not a golfer”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 October 2009

My husband and I spent two nights here in mid Sept . We booked it because the price for the amenities was so superior to anythiing we we could find in the city. In addition it is only a short drive to Edam, Marken and Volendam and onlly about 20 minutes from Zaanse Schans making it a great sightseeing location. I wouldn't suggest it if you are dependent on public transportation as it is in a somewhat isolated setting, and getting suitcases from the bus to the hotel could be difficult. An elderly friend of ours joined us and paid nearly 45 Euros for a taxi from Schiphol Airport.. If you're using a GPS be sure it's set for quickest route and not shortest. We had the shorter settting on and found ourselves on a small road through a village along a dyke. Very picturesque, and some difficult turns for our rented van,
Once there it is well worth the drive. The hotel has large open areas, very large rooms with very nice bathrooms and our ground floor room opened onto small patios with chairs. All was immaculately clean The tubs in the bath have very high sides and no handrails so a person with any physical problems would be at a disadvantage. The staff all spoke English and were helpful and friendly.
They do not include breakfast in the room rate and it is fairly expensive so the first morning we drove to a local Pancake House. Later we found there is also one at Zaanse Schans which is anly about 20 minutes driving time from the hotel, and is a wonderful Windmill Row . You could eat there and then spend some time touring the windmills museums , shops etc. The second morning we ate at the hotel as we were leaving to drive on and wanted an early start. The breakfast was large and varied including eggs, sausage and potatoes. We had a late snack in the bar the lounge the first night and found the service good and the meal quite nice. All in all it's a great hotel at great price.
