My wife and I just returned from 2 fantastic weeks in the Philippines. The first 5 days we stayed at the Cabana Beach Club Resort in Cebu. The only negative thing about this place is that it is 3 hours by car from the airport. It's a nice drive through different towns and such, but can be a bit of a hike for some.
The Cabanas here are simple and quaint, but very nice. They have A/C. It's a small resort with only about 8 units, so we liked the quiet atmosphere. Our original room had a nice porch facing the courtyard, and we could see the ocean. We managed to upgrade on our second day to a beachfront cabana (#10). This was fantastic, with a view of the ocean right from our bed (although a queen bed instead of the 2 singles pushed together would have been better). The row of 3 cabanas in this section had a nice sand area for relaxing with a few steps down to the ocean. The private pier was a great place for morning coffee or an evening glass of wine. The end of the pier has what appears to be a bar set up, but it was not in use when we were there. There was also a "common" area in the sand under a canopy where we could sit out of the sun. The pool was nice as well.
Our stay included breakfast daily. It was simple, but good. They served it to us right on our porch. The staff was very polite, and helpful. We were able to exchange traveler's cheques in the office, albeit at a lower rate than in Boracay. Still, the convenience factor made it worth it. The maids did an excellent job cleaning our room. There was also a security guard on site 24/7.
The snorkeling right off the beach was quite good. There were many fish, and some nice, live coral. The shelf drops off quite deep at the end of the pier and there would often be divers stopped there for awhile. We even saw a sea turtle swim past us while sitting on the end of the pier!
The area is nice. Not too busy (although there are a few pretty funky looking bars). It may be busier earlier in the season, but it wasn't during our stay. Clearly, this area caters to divers. Every place along the coast seemed to be affiliated with some type of dive group. The resort is very close to many small bars, restaurants, and some shops. There was a small convenience store right outside the resort where we could buy water, beer, wine, and snacks.
Overall, we would certainly recommend this resort if you want to stay in Cebu, but away from the really busy areas near Cebu City. Excellent value for the money.
