“Good resort for a family vacation but don't expect oceanfront and be prepared to walk a lot”
We just returned from a four day weekend at the Iberostar Paraiso Maya. Overall, the resort is beautiful, the food is very good, the service is excellent, and there are plenty of activities to keep every family member occupied. We had a superior junior suite at the Paraiso Maya which was huge and quite lovely. What we wish we had known before we arrived is how spread out the resort is (since there are multiple hotels, all connected) and how poor the signage is. At every turn there are roundabouts and multiple paths heading in different directions, with no signs or inadequate signage to direct you. Be prepared to walk very long distances every time you leave your room. If you have young children, be sure to bring the strollers.
Also, be prepared for most rooms to have waterless views, as the resort is laid out so that there is very little beachfront for each hotel. Picture the hotel as a long rectangle, with the short side facing the beach and the long sides lying perpendicular to the beach. Since there are multiple hotels, all laid out the same way, there is little oceanfront relative to the size and scale of the resort. At 10:00 in the morning (at the end of January) there was not a beach chair to be had anywhere. Luckily the pool runs the length of the resort so our chances for a chair were better, but still far from easy. If you're a beach person you may be disappointed, but if you prefer pools, then this may be the place for you, as the pool is lovely: meandering almost the length of the resort, with a wave pool at one end and a lazy river, too. I should mention that it is tricky to get to some of the restaurants, as you have to find the places where it is possible to cross from one side of the pool to the other. Try doing it at night when you just arrived and you get why I say be prepared to do lots of walking!
Although not the main reason to rule a hotel in or out, given the quality of the overall construction,we were surprised at how inadequate the lighting was in the room and in the bathroom. The makeup mirrors were installed backwards, making makeup application difficult in the windowless, dark bathroom. It was a real nuisance.
The Paraiso Maya is the top of the line if you are traveling with children. However we were unable to get reservations at the two specialty restaurants reserved for guests of the Paraiso Maya and ended up at the steak house (good, but not great) and the Mexican restaurant (very good) which are for Paraiso Lindo guests, too. If we go back, we will look into the Paraiso Lindo instead. And we DEFINITELY will go at a non peak time. This resort appears to house too many guests for the size of its beach. But if you need a place where the kids will be entertained, the pool is excellent, the service is good, and the food is better than most all inclusives, this may be a good choice.
Room Tip: Since the resort is very spread out, ask specifically to be located where you want to be, whether it...
