We went to the del Mar January 21st to the 28th 2012.
Checkin: Upon arrival we were pleasantly greeted by the reception area. They brought us the usual welcome drink that we look forward to when arriving. Check in was fast and efficient.
Our rooms were not ready as we arrived around noon. We ventured to the lobby bar for a couple of cocktails and then to the buffet restaurant for lunch.
We decided to look around and familarize ourselves with the BEAUTIFUL property. About 2 o'clock went to find that 2 of the 3 rooms were ready so we went to one and changed into our suits and off to the pool we went.
Rooms: Typical very clean standard room. Was surprised that they didn't have any dresser drawers though. Used the shelves in the closet. We had 3 rooms 1527,29 and 30. Great location for us. Looking out at the quiet pool and a short walk to the activity pool. I read about a lot of walking, I thought the location we were in was perfect for a central location to everything. Beds were quite comfortable.
Pool: The pools were fantastic. So much room and accomodations for everyone. If you like activity, quiet, even secluded you could find if that is what you are looking for.
Pool Bars: One thing I would have liked to see is an above ground bar by the pool area. If you wanted a drink you either needed to go in the pool or stand at the top of the steps to get one.
They did have wait service for those that were a distance away from the bar so that did help for some. We were very close to the pool bar. The bartenders were great and BUSY.
Food: We thought the food was very good. I made it to the Brazilian restaurant one night. It was very good. Can't comment on the others as I cannot eat at 8:30 pm and we didn't get our reservations in time to get to the earlier ones. The rest of the group really enjoyed them though.
Room service, wasn't all that impressed with the food. Had it a couple of times, pizza, burgers, salad that kind of food. Usually cold when it arrived.
Beach: Very nice soft white sand and crowded. We found an out of the way place to relax and enjoy the sound of ocean, as with the pool, you can find a place quiet or loud. Nice boardwalk as well.
Grounds: By far the nicest that I have seen. I have been to many resorts with beautiful grounds. This one felt very tropical and we really like that. We took our morning walks through the tropical woods and along the beach. Many hard working employees keeping it beautiful.
All in all I can say that we had a very enjoyable trip. I am an avid RIU Palace's fan and only went to this resort because some other family members had already book there. I am glad that we went...it will make it a bit harder to make a decision next year.
Word of warning. The resort has amazing fountains everywhere. When we checked out the reception desks was the only area lit up in the lobby early in the morning. Be very careful as the fountains are not running and look very much like the shiny floor in the darkened lobby. I walked right off and really hurt my knee (and pride) but was quickly told that it happens more often then you think. I did email Olga to suggest to either leave fountains running or put a small fence up.
