“Nice, but over priced, and no privacy unless you ensure you book separate rooms...”
Mum and Dad in 40's and 17 yr old daughter make up the travel party. First impressions were disappointing, albeit, that we arrived after midnight, so not seeing it at it's best, and we were pipped. Next morning all the staff were really friendly and pleasant - the breakfast was fine, a reasonable choice of hot (nay-luke warm) and cold - the friut, Greek yoghurt and honey was a real treat.
We thought we'd booked a Deluxe Family suite, and paid an extra Eu200's for an upgrade for an already expensive week, from the Family suite, so that daughter and the rents could have their own space - the rooms are all the same we were told- one room studios with a separate bathroom - so teenage daughter on sofa bed downstairs, effectively in same room as Dad and Mum on the mezzanine floor above. No privacy so be aware. We did ask Helen, the hotel manager, for a change, and she was really helpful, and relocated us in an upgraded room at no extra cost. We ended up with our own rooms, and a private garden with its own private plunge pool- great for when the main pool sun beds had been towelled out by breakfast (which to be fair was not every day), but if you think you're booking something really special, you're not, the photos on the website are well done - it's just a nice hotel (really hate that word nice, but it's not bad, but not something special either).
A fridge in the room was very welcome, but that's it - no other facilities. The plumbing was typically Greek - heated towel rail not properly attached to the wall, and the finish to the pipework would fail a GCSE, but hey-ho, it kind of worked, and hot water came out of the hot tap most of the time.
Typical standards of cleaning apply - the towels and linen were kept clean which is to be expected, but the number of squashed mozzies on the bathroom walls that had not been cleaned off, were the only real signs of a less than thorough job being done, but in fairness, other reports of dirty apartments didn't really apply for us, although if you wanted to find a cob web or ywo, you always can. (nit picking a bit, so in my experience, not something to put you off really)
The walk into the village (and back which always seems longer) was not too bad - about a mile or so, and took 15 or so minutes, but it was worth it.
The village of Afitos and the beaches are excellent. No footy shirts at all, and more upmarket than alot of otherwise touristy type resorts. Tavernas on the beach were very Greek, and evening meals over looking the bay where dolphins were breaking the waves was a treat. The food in town was so much better than previous experiences,so a thumbs up there too.
Overall, we would recommend Afitos to friends. From a value for money perspective, Petrinos Hotel is over priced, but I would still recommend it as a place to stay if you don't mind the walk into the village, and don't expect 5 star (probably a good 3 stars). Friendly & helpful staff do make a difference.
Hope this is a balanced review, and you do decide to visit Afitos, and stay at Petrino.
