“Almost perfect”

An excellent hotel, with excellent value-for-money as we were lucky enough to land a low season internet offer. Cleanliness was impeccable and staff were really polite and helpful.
The rooms are huge, even if you book the smallest one available it's probably bigger than most hotel rooms you've ever seen, bathrooms included.
The reception is exceptionally cosy, with tastefully decorated nooks and corners with settees, various ornaments as well as a fireplace. There is also a magnificent terrace with a stunning view of the valley.

As for the area, it is simply stunning. The hotel is on a hill overlooking the beautiful Cangas de Onis, in one of the greenest and most rural parts of Asturias. The air is supremely clean and all rooms give out on to an amazing valley, with breathtaking views of the imposing Picos d'Europa mountains. There's also an incredibly clean river/torrent running only yards away from the hotel.
The town is so small that you can get there on foot from the hotel in less than 5 minutes. It is true that at night the hillwalk is completely dark, like pitch black, which may worry the faint of heart a little, but in my view it's part of the charm and any different would spoil the atmosphere.

Staff will also help you with information about the area, which is packed with things to see.

The hotel also features a Michelin-star restaurant, which - though not the cheapest (but it's a 4-star so you knew it anyway) is absolutely stunning, both in terms of food, decor and quality service. Many dishes are typical of the area and were cooked to perfection and nicely presented - modern and rustic at the same time. We had an excellent meal there.

My only complaint is about the breakfast. This happened both mornings we were there, but there was JUST one overworked waiter pacing up and down trying to make coffee and tea, serve everyone and clear the tables as new guests were coming in. It really makes you feel sorry for him. He was trying his best but simply they need more staff as the poor chap couldn't cope and waiting time started getting a bit ridiculous and inapproriate for a 4-star hotel.

But that was the one and only glitch.

Other than that, a really enjoyable stay and we'd love to be back soon.

“Great location, high on a hill away from the bustle of the little downtown.”

This hotel is a mile out of the small downtown area. Great views! We had an upper room with one window and no fan, so it was a bit warm in July. But it was comfortable, quiet and clean at a good price. There are bigger rooms for more money with great big windows. We were going to be exploring the Picos so didn't spend much time in the room except to sleep. Good, if simple breakfast in nice room with terrace overlooking the mountains. Restaurant is good, as well, again great views. Good spot for exploring the Picos de Europa, and the beaches on the north coast are less than an hour away.

“FAWLTY TOWERS, PART 2 - MANUEL'S REVENGE”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 June 2010

In a trip around Northern Spain, staying at five 4 star hotels this was the only one that failed to meet expectations.

First the positives - the size of the rooms and the view.

Unfortunately the rest is all negative – there is no way of understanding how this is classified as a four star hotel.

- Customer service is zero in all areas
- At no point were we made to feel welcome
- There is no atmosphere in the hotel – reception and public areas are dark and soulless – arriving for breakfast in the morning you are greeted by a closed door and on one morning (50 minutes into breakfast service) no staff appeared for 10 minutes, despite ringing the bell!
- The reception is unmanned much of the time
- The hotel has an English version of their website but none of the staff speaks English, including the one English-speaking receptionist who comes on duty at 4 pm each day!
- There is no hotel information or directory in the room – when querying this we were instructed to ask at reception if there was anything we needed to know! Not acceptable in any circumstances, especially when reception is deserted much of the day and if you don’t speak Spanish it’s difficult to communicate your question or understand the answer! Our first attempt at a question was to enquire about breakfast times - only finally understood by the staff when communicated via signs and an odd word in Spanish.
- Breakfast was appalling – a series of sub-standard food items thrown on plates and dumped on the table. No choice, nothing like a reasonable selection and no ability to communicate your needs – all this at a grossly inflated price and bearing no resemblance to the description on the website.
- Large, old fashioned room keys are open to view in reception which is a big security risk considering that reception is not staffed much of the time.
- The hotel sits high on a hill above the town which gives good views over the rooftops to the mountains. However, for two people who normally enjoy walking into town for shopping, dining, etc. it was not feasible to walk.

We’re not sure what has happened to this hotel as it bears no resemblance to the more favourable reviews we’ve seen and lost its Johansen’s accreditation last year.

“Unforgettable stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 October 2009

We came from London to attend our friend´s wedding. We spend 3 nights in La cepada, we were made to feel at home, the staff were very helpful and hospitable, nothing was too much for them. The views from the rooms were just amazing, the food was simple but delicious and most importantly the wedding was very well organised. What a great place to celebrate the wedding...loved it....Unforgettable stay.

“Mostly Great”

The hotel is lovely with nice rooms and really pretty views of the town. Not recommended unless you have your own car, as the walk into town at night is dangerous. One of the few hotels in Cangas with free parking.

Service was a bit uneven, as when we arrived there was no one in the lobby and we needed to go on a long mission to find someone. Eventually we knocked on the door of the kitchen and a waiter came upstairs and let us into our room. Later that evening, we had to check in properly and the receptionist did it with us while she was on the phone with someone else the whole time. We also got incorrect information about when the restaurant was open.

However, staff are friendly and responsive - I just think they need a litle polish!

We got a better deal on a travel website than the hotel was willing to offer us directly.
