“Ok for a 2-3 star hotel, not a 4-star hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 September 2011

After 2 nights at La Cepada, I wholly agree with the negative reviews that this hotel is substandard and grossly overpriced. The website makes it look like a true 4-star hotel and I was fooled by that and by the very positive reviews here at tripadvisor. If it were a 3-star hotel and significantly cheaper, it would be fine --- it does have spectacular views, Cangas is in a lovely town and the outdoor terrace is wonderful. The staff were kind and tried to be helpful. The problem is the price-to-quality ratio. Having lived in Spain for nearly a decade, I have stayed in plenty of great 4-star places across the country for a similar price, and have stayed in nicer 3-star ones for much less. My complaints are the same as those of other reviewers (check out the Spanish-language negative reviews if you can):
- despite it being a busy end-of-summer weekend when the hotel was full, it was sometimes impossible to find someone at reception to help you. the lobby felt vacant and deserted.
- it was extremely hot and there was no air conditioning. Since the rooms have an entire wall of glass (with a wonderful view), the sun bakes the room all day. The curtains are insufficient to keep out light/heat. It was hotter in our room than in my non-AC home in Madrid (which averages 90-95degF in summer). I realize this was unusual for the region, but a 4-star hotel can't have at least a fan?
- the bath/shower was a bit dirty, with lots of mold on the shower screen. hot water came and went during the shower. the thing on the tap that switches between bath and shower was broken.
- the pillows are hard foam, like rocks, though the bed was comfortable
- perhaps most important: the service at breakfast was unbelievably slow. it seems the hotel owners are too cheap to hire more than one waiter, so the person working -- who was very kind and was clearly working hard -- is running from table to table at a fully booked hotel. since it is not a buffet, one cannot doing anything but sit and wait until various dishes are brought. it should not take 20 minutes to get a coffee served to you at a 4-star hotel. it would be far better if it were a buffet as most 4-stars are. the quantity and quality of food was fine.

“Spacious and friendly”

Stayed here for 3 nights while en-route from Santander to the Minho in Portugal. The hotel staff are very welcoming and friendly, but also efficient. A very little English is spoken. Really spacious, well appointed bedrooms, and comfy lounge area. Only drawback in the bedrooms is that none have balconies, just huge windows. Breakfast is very good, and includes hot fresh bread and pastries. Restaurant serves interesting and well prepared food, but is on the pricy side. The cafeteria is very basic, just sandwiches really. Lovely terrace area for drinks or snacks, with beautiful views over the town and across to the mountains. The hotel is a very short drive (2 mins) to the town. Cangas de Onis has a lovely atmosphere - yes there are plenty of tourist shops, but most of the visitors seem to be Spanish. Sadly we didn't find a good restaurant in the town - will try harder next time! Cangas is very well located for visiting the north side of the Picos and there are some fabulous walks within an hour's drive. Visit the lakes above Covadonga (the road is a bit challenging!) and try the Cares gorge walk. Even if you only get half way, the scenery is stupendous, and there's a nice little cafe right at the start, which is a welcome sight when you come down. Basic but good food. We shall be going back to this hotel in September next year.

Room Tip: All the rooms look out to the mountains so you're bound to get a good view.

“top quality and relaxed”

We stayed here for 3 nights in a huge second floor room with wall to wall glazing and great views. Really comfortable beds; our previous experience of spanish beds is that they are on the hard side of plank-like. The staff are relaxed and friendly. Staffing levels are not what you would anticipate in a four star hotel but out of the main season Spanish hotels tend to be very quiet and the staffing at this time reflects this. The camera linking that the hotel uses to connect staff with the various areas works well, so that if no one is there when you enter reception or the bar for example, someone will arrive within a short space of time.
Breakfast was of good quality and plentiful with efficient service and starts at 8.00. Many Spanish hotels don't start breakfast until 9.00. We had not intended eating in the hotel restaurant but tried it on the first night and decided that it could not be bettered for the price. The menu of the day was just under 20 euros for a beautifully prepared three course meal with appetisers.
We know the Picos mountains and Cangas de Onis well. As far as location is concerned the fact that the hotel is a kilometre out of town did not bother us; we go to the area to walk in the mountains anyway. We like the town; though it is quite touristy and not especially beautiful architecturally it does have a lovely feel. It is convenient for visiting the northern and western areas of the Picos mountains and is also convenient for the coast if you want variety or the weather inland is poor.
We spend most of our time in this area staying in self-catering accomodation as we like the space and flexibilty but will definitely be staying at La Cepada again for that touch of luxury.

“Very spacious, great view”

This hotel is not very close to the center (15min walk) but it's well worth it because it's not expensive and you'll probably get a large room with a great view of the village and mountains. Free internet and free parking.

just returned from a "Brittany ferries short break" to north Spain .cruised over night arrived late afternoon in Santander very good crossing , relaxed.Left ferry and drove to hotel good scenery all the way.Arrive Cangas de onis at hotel LaCepada running a bit late for dinner so opt for hotel restaurant turned out to be so good we did,nt manage to try any where else in town. Our first venture was to check out Lagos de Covadonga. mountain lakes 1100mts ASL breathtaking views.on the way back dropped by a christen shine carved in to the mountain side a must visit for pilgrims. If you plan any walking in these areas double the time you think it would normally take and prep for high peak walking ,have fun.Next day mountain village of Poncebos take vernacular train and walk back down after lunch in village take care! This should take about 1.5 hrs having made the car pack in one piece go and find a beer. The hotel La cepada has lots of space and secure parking ,the rooms are huge all of contemporary design and very clean. The service we found was very good the breakfast is continental and as much as you want ,if you fancy anything else ask the waitress /as an extra.lastly the restaurant is a real treat the nightly chefs special 25euro is a gastro delight .the service in the restaurant was 5*.If we do this trip again we will not hesitate to use this hotel top marks.

Room Tip: all look good.
