“Good ambience & location - perfect late summer break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2010

We have stayed at paradors before and know they can vary, but no-one else would be allowed to build hotels in the places they are found.

This is a very good one - recently built on an old monastery site, with good modern features, well-designed in sympathy with the original building of which sadly little remains.

After an excellent restaurant dinner (local fish), restful sleep in large twin beds & magnificent breakfast, we walked alongside the river 2 km into the bustling town of Cangis de Onis.

The parador is perfectly positioned for an easy drive to the coast - 25 km to Ribadesella - or up the twisty mountain roads to Covadonga & beyond into the Picos de Europa.

All the staff seemed very happy and were very helpful, from the barman serving tapas to the room maid bringing chocolates!

“Delightful Parador”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2010

The setting, building, our room, and bathroom were all perfect. Loved the little museum displays about the archaeology of the monestry. We walked for quite a long way along the river bank, which is accessed from behind the church. I didn't rate this Parador as excellent only because I thought the dining room a little gloomy and it smelled a bit musty. The overhead lighting and the arrangement of the tables in rows doesn't help the ambience; this could be a lovely room. Apart from this I would happily recommend this fine historic hotel.

“Lovely Old Monastery, Fabulous Breakfast”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2010

Lovely old Parador built from honey coloured stone with sympathetic modern extension just outside the busy town of Cangas. Beautiful old cloisters and reception area. Friendly reception staff and waiters but sulky girl serving in the bar. Very comfortable, large rooms on the lower floor with doors to communal garden. No view as such but very quiet.
Large twin beds pushed together, loads of storage, TV, safe, mini bar (with previous occupants sandwiches & banana still there!) air con, paying w-fi. Eccellent bathroom with good range of products including comb, toothbrush & paste etc. Altogether, very satisfactory.
Attractive bar area but could only buy wine by the glass from the grumpy bar girl. Not the end of the world but her attitude rather spoilt things. Nice restaurant but cannot comment on the meal as we were on a group deal and probably didn't have the best.
About the best buffet breakfast I've seen - cooked eggs, bacon, sausages, potatoes, sausages & other bits, huge range of cold meats & cheeses, all manner of breads & pastries and excellent coffee. Could have stayed there all day!

“Very nice Hotel in good location if over-priced.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2010

We enjoyed our two night stay here as a base to travel through the Picos. We took the 'Golden Days' offer with breakfast included as Parador breakfasts are over-priced if paid for separately. Our room was nice but breakfast a little disappointing - good selection but fried eggs congealed and bacon very fatty.

“No complaints”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 September 2010

Lovely old monastary conversion about 3kms outside Cangas set in its own car park and grounds so no noise can be heard from the road. Clean rooms, comfortable beds and excellent service. Fridge and flat screen television.

The food is of a high standard and well presented. They eat late in Spain so the parador restaurants do not open until 8.30pm which is a bit too late for some. Breakfasts are served from 8.00am.

Wooden floorboards mean the guests above can be heard walking around but we did not really find this a problem.

Whilst some of the original monastary is on show, and very interesting it is, I think it would have been good to have seen photos around the walls before and during conversion. Unfortunately the adjoining church is not open for viewing as it belongs to the village not the hotel.
